Abstract

Films, as literary works, use numerous types of language to communicate meaning, provoke emotions, and tell stories successfully. The auditory and symbolic elements are part of the languages associated with figurative language that refers to written or spoken communication, its principles and effects can also be applied in visual storytelling, which is a key aspect of the film itself. Understanding figurative language in a movie is a challenge for language enthusiasts as it involves interpretation and awareness of cultural and contextual influences on meaning. This study, exploring the use of figurative language in ‘The Shape of Water’ movie, employed a descriptive qualitative approach, which provides a factual and accurate description of the issue or area of interest. The study found that the film used seven language styles: personification, metaphor, simile, euphemism, metonymy, and allegory. Each figure of speech appears in varying quantities, In addition, there were fifteen sentences out of forty-six data containing similes which means people are most familiar with similes in literary works, notably in movies.

This qualitative research was conducted using critical discourse analysis methods. One of the titles of mamaos Cianjuran studied is Papatet. There are various types of papatets including queen papatet. Abstract

Kata kunci: creepypasta, pola alur, tiga babak   ABSTRACTCreepypasta is derived from "copypasta," which refers to copied internet text, with a horror-mystery genre. This research was conducted to identify narrative patterns that can distinguish the characteristics of literature in Creepypasta stories when compared to stories in the same genre. The method used was a descriptive-comparative approach, with a basis for comparison derived from the narrative structure employed in the stories. Creepypasta can be identified by breaking down its narrative into three stages according to Aristotle's theory, and then comparing them to find a recurring pattern. The results indicate that a) stage 1 introduces characters, setting, and atmosphere; b) stage 2 elaborates on conflicts faced by the main character; c) stage 3, the conclusion, relies on a plot twist to create tension and does not provide a resolution. Keywords: creepypasta, narrative patterns, three stages

Abstract

Analysing films involves more than just examining character arcs or plot points; it also requires an understanding of the cultural values embedded within the narrative. The primary objective of this study is to identify similarities and differences between the depiction of gender roles and cultural expectations in the film and those prevalent in Indonesian traditional culture, and to understand how they intersect or diverge. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research applies Charles S. Peirce’s semiotic analysis to examine gender roles and cultural expectations in Mulan, while conducting library research to explore gender roles in Indonesian society. The study reveals that there are notable similarities between the two contexts, particularly regarding the roles of women as household keepers, their loyalty to family, and their submissiveness to patriarchal expectations. However, both narratives also reflect evolving challenges to these traditional norms. In conclusion, the study highlights the parallels between traditional gender expectations in Mulan and Indonesian culture, while acknowledging the gradual shift toward gender role redefinition in both societies. Keywords: gender, gender roles, cultural expectation

Abstract

Translation is the process of conveying the meaning of a text accurately into a target language. Slang refers to informal language commonly used in casual conversations, making it unsuitable for formal situation. This study investigates the types of slang words and the translation strategies used in the subtitles of the movie Inside Out 2. Drawing on Allan and Burridge’s (2006) classification, the research identifies four types of slang—fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, and clipping—across 229 instances in the movie. Additionally, Baker’s (1992) translation strategies were analyzed to determine the most effective methods for rendering these slang expressions into the target language. The findings reveal that "direct translation" was the most frequently employed strategy (45.41%), followed by paraphrasing with related (18.78%) and unrelated words (16.16%). The study highlights the nuanced decision-making process involved in translating culturally specific and idiomatic language, offering practical insights for translators and contributing to the broader academic discourse on subtitling practices.
