Abstract

Racist behavior to this day still occurs frequently in various parts of the world. Racist behavior appears no longer caused by differences in physical form, but has penetrated into differences in ideology to beliefs. This study aims to describe the forms of racist behavior in the novel “Dear Martin” by Nic Stone using W.E.B Du Bois’ racial theory. This study also reveals the factors affecting the emergence of racist act and understands the impact of racist act to the victims. The type of this study is descriptive qualitative study. The techniques of data validation use reading techniques and note-taking techniques, whereas the techniques of data validation use increasing persistence, triangulation, and discussion. This study shows that white people often carry out racism against black people in the United States. Racist behavior occurred in the form of undervaluing black co-workers, insulting black women, unfairly applying the law, and doubting the abilities of black students. Racist behavior arises because of differences in class and social status, differences in skin color, accusations of being the perpetrator of a crime, and allegations of affirmative action. Racist behavior has significant impact toward victims among individual, family, and society, such as loss of fighting spirit, trauma, considering all people from the majority race to be racist perpetrators, worrying about the safety of their families, growing feelings of hatred and revenge, and retaliating against behavior. Based on the results of these studies, the finding of this study is racist behavior tends to occur because someone thinks that he or his group is superior to others. Racist behavior can be minimized if every individual, family, community, and even the government implements the values of equality and upholds human values from an early age.

Abstract

Gender equality has been an intriguing topic, particularly in the modern era. Modernization has given new meaning to the relational dynamics between men and women, leading to changes in the concept of masculinity. In this regard, the present research discussed the representation of masculinity in the poetry anthology “Barista tanpa Nama” by Agus Noor. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method to identify the aspects of masculinity in poetry, referring to Janet Saltzman Chafetz's theory. Seven characteristics of masculinity were examined in this study: (1) physical, (2) functional, (3) sexual, (4) emotional, (5) intellectual, (6) interpersonal, and (7) other personal traits. Based on the research findings, it was observed that the anthology “Barista tanpa Nama” by Agus Noor encompassed six out of the seven characteristics. Among these six, the sexual aspect emerged as the most dominant feature. However, it did not primarily focus on men driven by sexual desires but reflected those who prioritize care, attention to women, and genuine expressions of love without expectations. Thus, the representation of masculinity in the poetry anthology “Barista tanpa Nama” could be seen as a manifestation of a man's care, affection, and patience towards women.

Abstract

Sign language is the language used by the deaf to communicate. In general, there are two types of sign languages used in Indonesia, namely SIBI (Indonesian sign language system) and BISINDO (Indonesian sign language). Of the two, the sign language most often used by the deaf is BISINDO, because BISINDO is considered easier to understand. This study aims to explain the use of BISINDO in Deaf Indonesian language classes in the Surakarta Gerkatin organization. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with data in the form of image documentation. The data source is in the form of sign language learning process. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, recording and note-taking techniques. Data analysis techniques use interactive models. The results showed that the movements used in BISINDO learning at Gerkatin Surakarta involved the use of facial expressions, body language, arms and hands. There is a lot of vocabulary taught such as learning words, Indonesian, not yet, like, where, like, small, eat, alone, understand, don't know, work, sleep, words, healthy, black, fat, thin, color, about, purpose, lesson, early. If you look closely at the vocabulary taught, it has different conceptual sign languages. Like a like sign, demonstrated with the position of the hands in front of the mouth, then the palms open up plus the movement of the hands sticking from the chest towards the other person. Small gesture, in front of the chest with the tip of the thumb against the ring finger and the other three fingers open upwards, accompanied by a plucking motion of the two attached fingers. All the movements taught are made natural so that they are easy to understand according to the interpretation of the deaf. Thus, it is hoped that this variation of BISINDO's sign language will be increasingly recognized and widely used in teaching deaf sign language.

Abstract

The study of oral traditions needs to be encouraged as a form of effort to preserve local wisdom values. One oral tradition that has not been widely studied is the healing mantra of the Osing people. This research aims to describe the values of local wisdom in the oral tradition of healing mantras of the Osing people of Banyuwangi Regency from an anthropolinguistic perspective. The research method used is a qualitative research method with a Spradley ethnographic approach consisting five research steps. This research data collection is classified based on primary data. Primary data were obtained through interviews with native sources in Ngaliyan Village, Rogojampi District, Banyuwangi City. Data were collected using interview, listening, and speaking methods. The collected data were analyzed based on three main components: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions or verification. This research found four forms of local wisdom values in the oral tradition of healing mantras of the Osing Community, which include: (1) the value of asking God for healing, (2) the value of asking God for an abundance of grace, (3) the value of abstaining from acting carelessly, and (4) the value of the benefits of plants and nature. These four local wisdom values are depicted through a series of excerpts from the healing mantras of the Osing Community, Banyuwangi Regency, which has a wealth of distinctive traditions. Local wisdom values such as national wealth need to be cared for, including the oral tradition of Osing's magical mantras. In the modern society, the existence of this oral tradition is increasingly fading and will gradually fade if it is not preserved.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low reading comprehension ability of junior high school students in the field. The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of metacognition strategies and inferential abilities in improving students' reading comprehension abilities. The method used is a quasi-experiment with the aim of looking at the role of inferential abilities and metacognitive abilities in improving reading comprehension abilities. Apart from that, this research also uses correlational methods to study the relationship between these three variables (metacognitive components, inferential abilities, and reading comprehension abilities). The participants involved in this research were 300 junior high school students taken from 8 schools in the Ciamis area. Samples are selected randomly. Research findings show that metacognitive strategies are able to significantly improve students' reading comprehension skills through the stages of planning, monitoring, and evaluating. The reading comprehension skills possessed by these students are able to help them provide predictions of reading content with a good level of accuracy. The integration of components in metacognitive strategies and inferential abilities can improve reading comprehension abilities, especially inferential reading abilities. This research has the implication that teachers must optimize students' inferential abilities through metacognitive strategies so that students' reading comprehension abilities can also increase significantly.

Abstract

SK-II as an exclusive cosmetic brand from P&G company tries to use social issues about woman’s marginalization as their topics in the commercial theme #changedestiny. This study aims to analyze the advertiser’s real intentions in the text of the SK-II #changedestiny commercial by implementing the three dimensions of critical discourse analysis by Fairclough. The data is collected from the official SK-II and SK-II Indonesia channels on YouTube since they provide qualitative audiovisual data that can be widely accessed and contains creative values. This research uses qualitative analysis methods, by describing the analysis starting from the discussion of the linguistic aspect as a text analysis that finds the repetition of the keyword “change destiny” and the insertion of the word skin in the phrase, becoming “change skin's destiny”. This article found that the #change destiny campaign showed an insistent interest by inserting the word “skin” between the phrase “change destiny”.  Although the campaign seems to support the empowerment of women, it also has the main motive to promote its cosmetics which they claim could prevent skin aging. Video ads tend to display implicit recommendations for using their products. The SK-II Change Destiny series advertisement raises social issues that harm women, in the form of video testimonials with a storyline starting from the difficulties faced by women in self-actualization, and ending with success in changing destiny. It is concluded that by showing partiality to women as target consumers, SK-II presents itself as a brand that cares about more than just their consumers’ skin problems, but also the reality that occurs in society, to promote a basis for consumers’ loyalty.

Abstract

TikTok has become popular among children and teenagers, but there are concerns over the use of inappropriate and disrespectful language on the platform. This research aims to explore the impact of using the TikTok application on children's level of language politeness and the efforts made by parents to instill language politeness in children. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study type. The research sample consisted of children aged 6-12 years. Data was collected through interviews and questionnaires. Data was analyzed using an interactive model, which consists of three elements, namely data reduction, data presentation, and concluding/verification. The research results show that the use of TikTok has a potential impact on children's language politeness. As many as 84% of respondents have encountered impolite content on TikTok, but the majority of children (89.5%) still use polite language when commenting. In addition, around 52.6% of respondents thought that the language on TikTok did not influence everyday language. These findings show that children, despite being exposed to impolite content, are still able to maintain polite language when interacting on TikTok, and the impact on their daily language is relatively minimal. In conclusion, TikTok has the potential to influence children's language politeness, and the role of parents in supervising and educating children on this platform is very important.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of contextual learning models using role-playing techniques on the storytelling skills of Sanata Dharma University PGSD (Primary School Teacher Education) students. This research uses a quantitative approach to experimental methods by designing a group pretest and posttest. The population in this research is all PGSD students at Sanata Dharma University for the 2022–2023 academic year. The sampling technique uses simple random sampling. The sample taken was class 2C, with a total of 43 students. Data collection was carried out using observation and tests. This research data analysis technique uses prerequisite tests, namely the normality test, and hypothesis tests, namely the sample T-test. The findings in this research show that the application of a contextual learning model assisted by role-playing techniques has a significant positive effect on the storytelling skills of PGSD students at Sanata Dharma University. This can be seen from the average pretest score of students before implementing the contextual learning model, a modeling type assisted by role-playing techniques, namely 60.12 in the sufficient category. Meanwhile, the posttest average was 83.02 in the good category. Based on the normality test, the data results were normally distributed. A hypothesis-testing paired sample t-test was also carried out and produced a sig = 0.000 value, which means it is smaller than α (0.05). Thus, H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Furthermore, this research recommends that lecturers apply this learning model as an innovative model that can be applied to improve students' storytelling skills.

Various discussions by researchers about the maxim of politeness, the function of speech acts, direct speech acts, and indirect speech acts were an effort to describe the various speech acts of Cak Lontong in various contexts of speech. Different discussions are expected to provide theoretical implications regarding the pragmatic approach in Cak Lontong's humorous discourse.
