Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of students’ belief systems in Indonesian language learning at SMA Negeri 1 Kota Solok and to explain students’ engagement in language-learning activities. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data trustworthiness was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that students’ belief systems are reflected in three main dimensions: belief in language ability (self-efficacy), belief in the learning process, and belief in teachers and the learning environment. Most students demonstrated positive belief systems, as reflected in their confidence in understanding texts, writing, expressing opinions, and participating in classroom activities. The findings also indicate that belief systems contribute to students’ engagement in reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities. Supportive learning environments, constructive teacher feedback, and a strong school literacy culture further strengthened students’ beliefs and participation in Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the construction of meaning in poems written by eighth-grade students of Madrasah Hurrasul Aqidah Tarakan using Michael Riffaterre’s literary semiotic approach. The analysis focuses on the mechanisms of indirect expression, including displacement of meaning, distortion of meaning, and creation of meaning, as well as the process of meaning-making through heuristic and hermeneutic readings. In addition, the study explores the relationship between the meanings conveyed in the poems and the coastal cultural context of North Kalimantan, which forms part of the students’ social and cultural environment. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a field research design. Data were collected through poetry-writing tasks, observations, and documentation, and were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students construct meaning in their poems through the use of symbols, metaphors, and poetic expressions that represent emotional experiences such as struggle, longing, exhaustion, and hope. Displacement of meaning is reflected in the use of symbols that represent particular feelings and life experiences. Distortion of meaning appears in linguistic expressions that deviate from literal logic, thereby enhancing the aesthetic effect of the poems. Meanwhile, the creation of meaning is realized through repetition and the interconnectedness of meanings across lines and stanzas. The study also indicates the presence of North Kalimantan coastal cultural elements, represented through images of the sea, fishermen’s lives, and coastal environments. However, these local cultural aspects are not yet dominant, as most poems primarily focus on the students’ personal experiences. Therefore, Riffaterre’s semiotic theory proves relevant for uncovering meaning in students’ poetry and provides a foundation for developing literary learning that integrates aesthetic experience with local wisdom.

Abstract

This study explores the role of poetry as a medium for reflecting local wisdom through the analysis of 40 poems written by multiethnic students at Universitas Borneo Tarakan. Employing a qualitative content analysis approach and in-depth interviews, this study addresses four research problems: (1) identification of local wisdom values, (2) analysis of linguistic styles and symbols, (3) alignment with social practices, and (4) relevance for strengthening cultural literacy. The findings reveal five dominant local wisdom values: environmental conservation (35%), sacredness of tradition (28%), social solidarity (20%), cultural aesthetics (12%), and maritime wisdom (5%). Stylistic analysis indicates the effective use of ecological metaphors, cultural symbolism, and ritual language in representing these values. Interview data confirm that 73% of the poetic representations align with actual social practices, with 22% reflecting modern adaptations and 5% showing generational disjunction. This study recommends integrating poetry into higher education curricula as an innovative strategy for strengthening cultural literacy, through the development of local content teaching materials, creative writing workshops, and literature-based cultural festivals. The findings demonstrate that poetry not only reflects cultural values but also serves as a medium for preserving and transforming local wisdom in ways that remain relevant to modern societal contexts.

Abstract

The Sawer tradition is an important stage in Sundanese traditional wedding ceremonies that incorporates various verbal and nonverbal symbols as a medium for conveying advice, prayers, and cultural values to newlywed couples. However, the symbolic meanings embedded in this tradition are not fully understood by the community, including some members of the Sundanese ethnic group themselves. This study aims to describe and analyze the forms and meanings of verbal and nonverbal symbols in the Sawer tradition of Sundanese wedding ceremonies in Beringin Jaya Village, Bumi Raya District, Morowali Regency. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that verbal symbols in the Sawer tradition are expressed through four categories of ritual songs: the opening song, the song for the groom, the song for the bride, and the closing song. These symbols represent religiosity, responsibility, commitment, fidelity, cooperation, harmony, and divine blessing. Meanwhile, the nonverbal symbols, including yellow rice, candies, money and coins, and an umbrella, symbolize prosperity, harmony, economic well-being, protection, and family happiness. The findings indicate that the Sawer tradition functions as a medium for transmitting cultural, moral, social, and religious values and plays a significant role in preserving the cultural identity of Sundanese migrant communities.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Antropologi Sastra, Cerita Pendek, Representasi Budaya, Tradisi, Masyarakat Adat   Abstract Abstract Literature serves as both aesthetic expression and a medium for cultural representation, recording the values and belief systems of a society. This study analyzes the representation of cultural meanings and traditions in the short story "The Traditional Feast for Princess Karang Melenu" using a literary anthropology approach. The research focuses on traditional rituals, cultural symbolism, and social interactions as reflections of the collective identity and value systems of indigenous communities. Using content analysis as the research method, data were processed through coding, thematic grouping, and the interpretation of symbolic meanings. These textual findings were then linked with literary anthropology and cultural studies theories to gain a contextual understanding of the narrative. The results demonstrate that traditional rituals function as symbols of social legitimacy, cultural transition, and individual recognition within indigenous social structures. Furthermore, cultural symbolism involving mythological figures and magical animals represents a belief system that integrates nature and non-human creatures into a cultural cosmology. Social interactions between characters further reflect communal values, including adherence to customary norms, social solidarity, and respect for collective interests. In conclusion, the study confirms that "The Traditional Feast for Princess Karang Melenu" acts as a vital medium for cultural representation. Through its narrative structure, the short story effectively preserves tradition and documents the socio-cultural identity of the community it depicts. Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed online games into new spaces for social interaction among children, including elementary school students. One of the most popular online games is Free Fire, which provides real-time communication features through voice chat and text chat. Such interactions potentially encourage language use that deviates from norms of politeness. This study aims to describe the forms of linguistic impoliteness and to identify the factors influencing impolite language use among upper-grade students at SDN Kurisa in their engagement with the online game Free Fire. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach within a pragmatic framework. The data consisted of students' utterances collected through voice chat recordings, screenshots of in-game text chats, classroom and field observations, and semi-structured interviews with students, teachers, and parents. Data analysis was conducted using Culpeper's theory of impoliteness, encompassing strategies such as bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness. The findings indicate that students frequently produced impolite utterances in the form of insults, profanity, direct commands without mitigation, sarcastic remarks, and the use of harsh slang and gaming jargon. These practices were influenced by internal factors, including limited emotional control and insufficient awareness of politeness norms, as well as external factors such as the competitive nature of the game, peer group influence, and weak social control in digital environments. The study also reveals a tendency for language practices from the gaming context to transfer into everyday school interactions. This research contributes to pragmatic studies on impoliteness in children's digital communication and offers practical implications for teachers and parents in fostering polite language use in the digital era.

Abstract

Digital public spaces have evolved into primary arenas for political discourse as well as for the expression of collective emotions. One prominent phenomenon is the proliferation of antipathy-laden comments on Instagram related to the alleged fake diploma issue of President Joko Widodo. This study aims to analyze forms of antipathy expressed in Instagram users’ comments from a forensic linguistics perspective and to examine associated violations of language politeness principles. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the data consist of 58 Instagram comments collected from posts by public figures and online news media during May–June 2025. Data were analyzed through stages of reduction, classification, and linguistic interpretation based on forensic linguistics frameworks and Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The findings reveal that antipathy is predominantly expressed through hate speech, sarcasm, insults, unsubstantiated accusations, harsh satire, and negative labeling. From a forensic linguistics perspective, these expressions are characterized by negative evaluative lexis, presuppositions that frame assumptions as facts, and delegitimizing linguistic strategies targeting the subject. In terms of politeness, most comments violate both positive and negative face, indicating potential ethical and legal implications. This study underscores the urgency of language politeness education as an integral component of digital literacy in fostering responsible online public discourse. Abstract

This study aims to explore the prompting pattern of students in interaction with ChatGPT in review text writing activities. The main focus of the research lies in how students design and use prompts as strategies in directing AI responses at the revision stage (rewriting), not solely on the results of the writing produced. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design. The research subjects consist of students in two Phase F classes specializing in Science and Technology at MAN 2 Malang City. The learning activity adopts Donald M. Murray's writing process strategy so that ChatGPT is specifically integrated as a dialogical partner in the revision phase of review texts. Data in the form of 154 prompts obtained from 31 units of student interaction with ChatGPT which were analyzed through a thematic coding process. The results showed that student interaction formed a diverse pattern of prompting strategies, including evaluative prompting, directed revision, and response control. These strategies reflected different levels of cognitive involvement in utilizing AI as digital scaffolding in students' Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). However, most prompts were still general and technical improvement-oriented, indicating efforts to minimize cognitive load in the revision process. These findings show that the quality of interaction with AI is highly dependent on students' ability to design prompts specifically and reflectively. This study emphasizes that prompting is a key competency in AI-based learning and needs to be explicitly developed as part of digital literacy in pedagogical practice.
