Abstract

This study investigated the impact of authentic assessment on students' critical thinking in English classes. The study targeted two English teachers who had experience using authentic assessment in their classrooms. Data was collected through observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and documentation. The findings of the study showed that authentic assessment had a positive impact on students' critical thinking. Students who participated in authentic assessments were more motivated to learn, were better able to apply their English skills in a real-world context and were more likely to engage in critical thinking. The study also identified several opportunities/dispositions that promoted students' critical thinking in authentic assessments. These included teamwork and monitoring, which helped students identify other people's ideas, evaluate the evidence for a particular issue, reflect on an issue by bringing in logical opinions, draw conclusions about an issue, and present their points of view. The findings of this study suggest that authentic assessment is a valuable tool for promoting critical thinking in English classes. Authentic assessments can help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in college and the workplace.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an important element in language learning that students have to master. English language learning is greatly influenced by technological advances. Several applications have provided more flexible and accessible means that can be used through smartphones as needed for vocabulary mastery . This study aims to find out how senior high school students can increase their vocabulary mastery through the use of Mondly. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design is the method used in this study. The 10th grade students of SMK Tritech Informatika Medan participated in the study.. According to the research findings, the students' mean score was 71.69 on the pretest and 83.53 on the posttest. The t-test with a sig (2-tailed) value of 0.000 or 0.05 was used to test the hypothesis. Therefore, "Ha" is accepted, and "Ho" is rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that vocabulary learned using Mondly application significantly increased the vocabulary mastery of tenth-grade students of SMK Tritech Informatika. Keywords: Vocabulary mastery, Mondly application, Language learning

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is crucial for language learners, impacting their overall linguistic proficiency and communication abilities. This research investigated the influence of vocabulary learning strategies and study programs on maritime cadets' vocabulary test results at Sorong Merchant Polytechnic. This study employed a quantitative methodology and an ex-post facto design. The sample consisted of 91 third-semester cadets from Sorong Merchant Marine Polytechnic, representing three study programs: Port and Shipping Management, Ship Engineering, and Nautical Studies. Data were collected through a questionnaire to assess vocabulary learning strategies and a vocabulary examination based on maritime-related queries. Statistical analyses revealed no significant differences in vocabulary test scores across academic programs and learning strategies, despite the popularity of the determination strategy. However, a two-way ANOVA indicated a significant interaction effect between vocabulary learning strategies and study programs (F(7, 77) = 2.477, p = .024). This suggests that specific combinations of learning strategies and study programs may enhance vocabulary test results more effectively than individual variables alone. Therefore, developing tailored teaching methods is crucial to improve learning outcomes. Further research should explore additional factors such as motivation, prior language proficiency, and learning environment support to optimize language learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research investigated the impact of the "Learn English Listening App" on eighth-grade students' listening comprehension. The design of Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used in this study. Two cycles of pre and post-tests, observations, and interviews were conducted. In the first cycle, the app did not lead to a statistical improvement in listening. The mean post-test score (57) was lower than the mean pre-test (61). The observations indicated a positive attitude towards the app, yet some students underutilized its potential, highlighting the need for further support. Interviews provided insights, emphasizing the importance of additional guidance in applying the application. In the second cycle, the students were maximized to utilize the app, significantly improving listening comprehension (mean score: 72.67). The t-test analysis showed a difference (t ≈ 2.43) between the pre and post-test, confirming the app's effectiveness. The observations during the second cycle showed enhanced engagement. The "Learn English Listening App" proved valuable for enhancing eighth-grade students' listening skills. The classroom action research approach allowed for iterative adjustments, contributing to improved scores. In conclusion, the second cycle's t-test results, supported by classroom observations and interviews, provide robust evidence of the app's positive impact. Educators at Islam Al-Azhar 17 Pontianak and similar settings can consider integrating technology-based interventions like the app to enhance students' listening comprehension. Further research could explore its long-term effects and impact on other language skills.

Abstract

In today's technology-driven world, students are increasingly surrounded by digital tools, with easy access to vast amounts of information (Egbert, 2009). From a pedagogical perspective, integrating technology into education is essential for successful learning outcomes (Sebring and Chicago School Consortium, 2013). Despite this, less than half of students utilize technology for academic purposes, though 92% have access to it at home. The evolving information age has made previously expensive technologies accessible to many (Edwards, 2009), necessitating that educators adapt to this technological integration. This study examines the impact of Google Classroom and its extensions on student motivation and engagement in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms at SMA Islam Athirah Bone. The research highlights the importance of incorporating real-world technology into EFL classes to enhance student interest and motivation (Usher Center on Education, 2012). Technology supports diverse learning styles, fosters community, and provides hands-on experiences, especially beneficial for students with learning disabilities (Heafner, 2004; Liu, 2016). As English is a global language, its learning is critical for accessing research and higher education (Morris Maxey, 2014). Traditional methods have evolved, with technology playing a pivotal role in English language instruction (Graddol, 2012).This qualitative study uses video recordings, interviews, and observation checklists to explore the impact of technology on student engagement and motivation in EFL classrooms. Data collection involved classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with teachers and students. The findings indicate that both teachers and students at SMA Islam Athirah Bone perceive the use of Google Classroom and its extensions as beneficial for active learning and engagement. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how technological tools can enhance EFL learning experiences and suggests practical applications for better classroom interactions.

Abstract

Maritime English is essential for ensuring safety, efficiency, and effective communication in the global maritime industry, particularly for ship machinery students who require specialized language skills for technical and emergency situations. This study examines the specific needs of ship machinery students in Maritime English education, highlighting significant gaps in the current curriculum, especially in technical terminology and practical communication exercises for ship machinery operations and emergencies. A mixed-methods approach was utilized, involving 24 students and four professionals through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis. Results indicate that 75% of students find the curriculum moderately effective, but 65% identify gaps in technical terminology, and 60% report inadequate real-life communication practice. Instructors emphasized the need for professional development to address these gaps. The study calls for a tailored curriculum based on English for Specific Purposes (ESP), integrating specialized content, practical exercises, and realistic simulations. It underscores the importance of continuous needs analyses and institutional support for curriculum enhancements, ensuring that Maritime English instruction remains relevant and effective in preparing students for their professional roles in the maritime industry. This approach will contribute to global maritime safety and efficiency by equipping ship machinery students with the necessary language skills.

Abstract

Copland et al. (2014) report that a large number of teachers deal with students at various phases of learning and with diverse individual requirements; students are frequently viewed as weak in language learning. This paper tries to find out the answer to how can teachers involve the high-proficient students in supporting low-proficient students in Indonesian English primary classes? The investigation of this topic can provide English teachers with strategies for encouraging student interactions between students of varying English proficiency levels. In addition, it provides a variety of techniques for maximizing the English learning experience for pupils of varying proficiency levels. In this paper, it is argued that incorporating positive interaction throughout the learning process is beneficial for the support of low-proficient students by high-proficient students in Indonesian English primary classes. Some of the ways it can be achieved is through peer learning, cooperative learning, and digital learning, among other methods. Our curriculum may require consideration of positive student interaction and the inclusion of materials on incorporating positive student interaction in English language learning through various Teacher Professional Development program methodologies. Additionally, Elementary English teachers in Indonesia should master teaching techniques that integrate positive student interactions.
