Abstract

As human living in the world of communication, human intend to interact with other human being using both verbal and nonverbal communication. This study aims to describe the used of nonverbal communication and the importance of facial expression found in “A Man Called Otto” film, and find the meaning of facial expression used in this film. This research used descriptive qualitative with phenomenological approach to breakdown the effectivity of facial expression as nonverbal communication tools for humans to socialize with others. The finding of this research shows there are 7 types of Nonverbal communication were found, such as: kinesics, haptics, physical appearances, proxemics, environmental factors, paralanguage, and silence. After this finding, the researcher will focus on facial expression breakdown consist of 14 scenes from “A Man Called Otto” film. In this research, Students can benefit from this research by developing their analytical skills in interpreting facial expressions and their meanings within a narrative context. This can enhance their critical thinking and observational skills. And then, this finding can inspire students to conduct their own analyses of films or other media, focusing on non-verbal communication. This can lead to creative projects that explore how emotions are expressed visually.

Abstract

This study explores the difficulties in English language comprehension faced by children of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with sixth-grade students in a non-formal education center. The findings reveal five major challenges: (1) multilingual environment, which hinders English language comprehension due to the influence of other languages; (2) limited access to education, resulting in difficulties in English language comprehension due to inadequate facilities and resources; (3) social and economic factors, which impede English language comprehension due to limited access to technology and internet; (4) lack of authentic English exposure, leading to difficulties in English language comprehension due to insufficient exposure to authentic English language; and (5) psychological factors, including motivation and self-confidence, which affect English language comprehension due to anxiety and low self-esteem. These factors are interrelated and rooted in the students’ linguistic environment, educational infrastructure, and socio-emotional context. The study underscores the need for inclusive, context-responsive instructional strategies and improved educational support systems to enhance the English listening skills of marginalized learners.

Abstract

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has begun reshaping language assessment practices, demanding that future educators develop not only assessment literacy but also a critical understanding of AI-driven tools. This preliminary study explores the perceptions and beliefs of pre-service language teachers in Indonesia regarding AI-based language assessment, with a focus on how these perceptions influence their readiness to navigate the evolving landscape of educational evaluation. Employing a mixed-methods approach through open-ended surveys, the study investigates participants’ views on the pedagogical potential of AI technologies in supporting formative and summative assessment, as well as the challenges they face in adopting such innovations. Findings indicate that while many pre-service teachers acknowledge the efficiency and objectivity offered by AI, they express uncertainty about its reliability, ethical implications, and their own preparedness to effectively integrate AI tools into classroom assessment. These insights point to an urgent need for teacher education programs to incorporate AI-related assessment training that fosters not only technical skills but also reflective and ethical awareness. This study contributes to the growing discourse on AI in language education, advocating for a reimagined teacher preparation model that equips future educators with the competencies needed for responsible and effective use of AI-driven assessment systems.

Abstract

This study examines the use of speech acts by Prabowo Subianto in his interview at the 2024 Qatar Economic Forum and explains how his language reflects Indonesia’s global economic strategy. It focuses on identifying and categorizing the speech acts used by Prabowo, focusing on locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary aspects to understand how his communication influences both domestic and international audiences. The study employs a qualitative approach, analyzing the interview transcript of Prabowo Subianto using Searle’s theory of speech acts and Austin’s framework for a deeper interpretation. The results reveal that Prabowo predominantly uses assertive (66%), expressive (14%), and commissive (16%) speech acts, projecting confidence and commitment to Indonesia’s economic growth. While directive acts (4%) were less frequent, they were strategically used to challenge critics and reinforce his legitimacy. The findings highlight the significant role of language in shaping perceptions of a country’s economic vision on the global stage. This study underscores the significance of speech acts in shaping political discourse and offers insights into the strategic deployment of language by political leaders in international forums.

Abstract

This study explores the sociolinguistic phenomenon of language variation among Indonesian teenagers influenced by the online multiplayer game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation and surveys involving 15 teenagers aged 15–25 from Pamekasan, East Java. Guided by Labov’s Variationist Sociolinguistics theory, the research investigates three core issues: (1) the types of language variations that emerge within the Mobile Legends community, (2) the influence of the game on teenagers’ linguistic behavior, and (3) the impact of these variations on their social interactions. Findings reveal that Mobile Legends creates a distinctive linguistic environment characterized by gaming-specific jargon, slang, code-switching, and situational register shifts. These linguistic features reflect a hybrid style shaped by both global digital language and local vernacular practices. Importantly, this language extends beyond the gaming context, permeating daily conversations among peer groups. The use of in-game language serves not only for strategic communication but also as a marker of group identity and belonging. However, the study also identifies potential concerns, such as the normalization of vulgar language and a decline in formal communication norms. Additionally, linguistic variation in gaming contexts contributes to the formation of social hierarchies, reinforces group solidarity, and can lead to exclusionary practices toward non-gamers. These findings highlight the need for educational stakeholders to consider the impact of digital culture on adolescent language development, particularly within the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between students’ socioeconomic status (SES) and their use of language learning strategies (LLSs) within an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. Using Oxford’s (1990) taxonomy of language learning strategies as a framework, the study involved 46 sixth-semester students majoring in hospital administration enrolled in an Intensive English Class. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected through a modified and translated version of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), with the Pearson correlation test applied to determine the relationship between SES and LLS use. The results showed no statistically significant correlation between socioeconomic status and language learning strategies, indicating that students from different SES backgrounds use strategies with similar frequency and types. These findings suggest that language learning strategies are likely influenced more by internal learner factors—such as motivation, cognitive preferences, or instructional context—than by socioeconomic status. The study highlights the importance of providing equitable language learning support and recommends further research into possible mediating variables that may affect strategic learning behavior.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out what phonological errors are the most frequent in EFL learners with SoundType AI application. This studyl emlployled a quantitative research design to investigate how advanced Artificial Intelligence technologies imlproved pronouncing qualityl froml the perspective of EFL students. The population for this research includes the EFL learners enrolled in English Education in the Facultyl of Teacher Training and Education at Universitas MLuhamlmladiylah Sumlatera Utara that have finished the Phonologyl course. Sample used for the research wasl 22 EFL learners to ensure statistical significance and allow for subgroup analylsis. The data obtained from the reading test was identified a total of 58 errors across the recordings, with the predominant types being Omissions (20,68%) and mishearings by the speech recognition software (27,43%), Substitutions (18,96%) and Additions (18,96%) and Distortions (15,51%). Overall, these findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to address the specific phonological difficulties faced by EFL learners. Additionally, reading exposes learners to different cultures and perspectives. This cultural awareness enriches their understanding of the world and helps them connect with others more effectively.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Chatbots are computer programs designed to simulate human conversation and offer interactive, personalized learning experiences. This quantitative study investigated the effectiveness of an AI Chatbot (implemented using the website platform https://www.aichatting.net) in improving students' vocabulary mastery at SMP Negeri 01 Dapurang Pasangkayu, Indonesia. The study employed a quasi-experimental design, comparing an experimental class (8B, n = 25) that utilized the AI Chatbot with a control class (8B, n = 25) that employed a conventional teaching method. The intervention was conducted over six sessions across three weeks, from April 26 to May 19, 2025. Students completed pre-tests and post-tests to assess vocabulary mastery. The experimental class mean score increased from 31.60 to 76.00 (gain = 44.40; Cohen’s d = 4.71), while the control class improved from 32.00 to 46.00 (gain = 14.00; Cohen’s d = 1.43). An independent samples t-test on post-test scores revealed a statistically significant difference between the classes, t (48) = 12.42, p < .0001, with a 95% confidence interval of \ [25.27, 34.73]. These results confirm that the AI chatbot had a substantial impact on vocabulary mastery in practice. While the study supports the potential of AI chatbots as effective vocabulary-learning tools in junior high school settings, it also acknowledges the limitations of the quasi-experimental design and recommends further research using randomized controlled trials.

Abstract

The focus of linguistic research has been shift in the past five years from face to face communication to online communication. This research employed content analysis on a number of articles that had been published in linguistics journals across Indonesia since 2020 to 2024, with linguistic aspect in social media as the main focus of the research. This current research has revealed that in the past five years, the number of publications used social media as their data source had improved. Among those publications, the most dominant research designed was qualitative descriptive. In addition, content analysis is the most dominant method to analyze the data. Instagram is the most frequently platform used as data resources in linguistic research. Researchers are particularly interested to investigate pragmatic aspects towards the online communication in social media. Based on the findings, future research is encouraged to use more diverse research designs, expand the scope of linguistic domains, and explore new platforms such as threads to better capture evolving digital language trends. Researchers are also advised to continuously adapt their methods and analyses to the dynamic nature of online communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Superlingo application in enhancing junior high school students' English pronunciation skills. Pronunciation mastery is a crucial aspect of English language learning, yet it often poses challenges for students due to limited practice time and conventional teaching methods. This research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining a quantitative experimental design (pre-test and post-test) with a qualitative phenomenological approach through in-depth interviews. A total of 30 eighth-grade students were selected and divided into two groups: an experimental group using the Superlingo application and a control group applying traditional learning methods. The quantitative results revealed that the experimental group showed a significant average score improvement of 7.2 points (from 18.4 to 25.6), while the control group improved by only 2.2 points (from 18.1 to 20.3). A paired sample t-test confirmed the statistical significance of the improvement (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, qualitative findings indicated that features such as AI-powered speech recognition, gamification, and interactive exercises boosted students' learning motivation and confidence in speaking English. However, challenges such as internet connectivity and occasional AI misjudgment of pronunciation accuracy were also reported. These findings suggest that integrating AI-based applications like Superlingo into the curriculum can significantly enhance pronunciation learning. This study contributes to the development of modern, adaptive, and student-centered digital learning strategies.
