Abstract

Students' limited descriptive writing skills can hinder their ability to express ideas clearly, expand their vocabulary, and develop their imagination. This, in turn, may restrict their communication skills when conveying experiences or concepts in a detailed and structured manner. This study seeks to examine the impact of higher-order thinking skills-based learning on students' descriptive writing abilities in the context of Indonesian language education, potentially offering valuable insights into effective learning strategies. The research employed a quasi-nonequivalent control group experimental design, dividing junior high school students into two balanced groups. The experimental group, consisting of 35 students, utilised higher-order thinking Ability Based Learning, while the control group, also comprising 35 students, did not. The study encompassed the entire population of seventh-grade students, totalling 70 individuals. Data collection involved observation, tests, and documentation, with analysis conducted using Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics via the SPSS application. The findings indicate a significant positive impact of higher-order thinking skill-based learning. Students who engaged in this approach demonstrated substantial improvement in their descriptive writing skills, enhancing their capacity to critically analyse information, think creatively, and solve problems.

Abstract

The post-method era is currently experiencing a surge in popularity within the realm of English language teaching, particularly in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), such as in Indonesia. Given the crucial role of Speaking as a central element in communication, it requires meticulous attention and instruction in an EFL setting. Teachers play a pivotal role in preparing effective strategies to assist learners in achieving fluency and accuracy in spoken English. Consequently, this paper aims to expound on the recommended micro strategies derived from Kumaravadivelu's post-method framework. It delineates the macro strategies of post-method in English Language Teaching (ELT) as the foundational elements for creating micro strategies tailored to the teaching of Speaking in the Indonesian context. The article outlines ten macro strategies, which include increasing learning opportunities, facilitating negotiated interaction, minimizing perceptual mismatches, activating intuitive heuristics, fostering language awareness, contextualizing linguistic input, integrating language skills, promoting learner autonomy, ensuring social relevance, and raising cultural consciousness. Drawing on this strategic framework, the article gives illustrated instances of classroom activities and instructional tactics, dubbed micro strategies, that have been utilized to improve Indonesian learners' EFL Speaking competency.

Abstract

Mastering speaking for dentistry students is essential both for academic and professional purposes. While technology is widely integrated into the English learning process, limited study exists on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in this case SmallTalk2Me, in English as a Foreign Language classroom. Thus, this study aims to elaborate on the use of AI to enhance dentistry students' speaking skills and to investigate its benefits on students' mastery of speaking English. Using the descriptive qualitative method, this study seeks a deeper understanding of students' speaking skills reflected in their interaction with the AI. 78 dentistry students were asked to do the speaking level test on SmallTalk2Me. The findings indicated that the majority of the students were in the intermediate level (30 students), followed by an upper intermediate level (27 students). In terms of speaking elements, the students demonstrated advanced proficiency in fluency (37 students) and grammar use (32 students). However, there is a need for improvement in terms of students' pronunciation (29 students) and vocabulary mastery (28 students), indicated by their intermediate level performance. The detailed as well as instant feedback provided by the AI highlights the AI's role in assisting the students in improving their speaking proficiency level. Additionally, it helps teachers in developing suitable lesson plans aligned with the student's proficiency level. In summary, this study emphasizes the benefits of integrating AI into the English and learning process, particularly for enhancing speaking skills among dentistry students.

Abstract

This research employs critical discourse analysis (CDA) to examine a news article titled "KPU Chief Rebuffs Allegations of Bias during VP Debate" from the Jakarta Post, focusing on the transition from print to online media or E-Paper. In this research, the two main methods used to collect data are documentation via the Jakarta Post e-paper news page and content review. This approach provides the advantage of exploring information in depth and comprehensively related to the phenomenon or event that is the focus of the research. Utilizing Teun A. van Dijk's CDA framework, the analysis encompasses macro, superstructure, and micro structures. The macro-structural analysis reveals the social and political context, identifying social groups and emphasizing narrative importance. The critical discourse superstructure analysis delves into linguistic patterns, representations of power, and strategic language use. Finally, the micro-structural analysis explores word choice, grammar, writing style, and sentence structure to understand how language constructs arguments and responds to accusations. Through these lenses, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of how the news shapes and reflects social and political dynamics, contributing valuable insights into media discourse surrounding political events in Indonesia.

Abstract

Writing has been taught for many years as one of the skills that need to be acquired to learn English. However, the long process of writing, which consists of pre-writing, writing, and revising stages, makes it more difficult for the students to do it. Therefore, this study aims to investigate students' strategies in the process of writing. The study used a qualitative design that employed a questionnaire as the main instrument for collecting the data. The questionnaire was distributed to 45 first-year college students. The result from the questionnaire shows that the students used some strategies in each stage of the writing process: pre-writing (70.63%), writing (72.95%), and revising (60.16%). In pre-writing, the students primarily applied resourcing and elaborating strategies. During the writing stage, the most commonly employed strategy was rereading. Finally, in the last phase, they solely employed proofreading as their strategy. By understanding the students' strategies in writing, the teacher can help them develop better writing skills as well as facilitate them in becoming more effective writers.
