Abstract

This study examines translation shifts in public signs at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, applying Catford's category shifts (1965). It emphasizes the importance of maintaining both semantic meaning and stylistic elements during the translation process between the source language (SL) and the target language (TL). The research identifies four distinct types of category shifts: structure, unit, class, and intra-system. Data were gathered through observations of 52 public signs. The findings reveal that structure shifts are the most prevalent, accounting for 52% of the identified shifts, followed by unit shifts at 28%, class shifts at 16%, and intra-system shifts at 4%. These results highlight the necessity for structural adaptations to ensure effective translation in public signage. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of employing diverse translation techniques to facilitate clear communication in an international airport environment.

Abstract

In the study of language, every word has its own meaning, and occasionally the same word has different meanings that can lead to ambiguity and potential misinterpretation. This is especially true in art terms, where certain terminology may only be understood by artists and people with knowledge of art. The reserch aims to identify art terms sourced from the MoMA official website that fall into the category of homonyms either homographs or homophones, and to explain the differences in meaning of these terms in the context of art and in the general context. The research method uses a qualitative method, with content analysis design. Qualitative Content Analysis in research aims to understand the meaning, theme, or pattern in text data in depth and contextually. Qualitative content analysis in this study emphasizes understanding the context and nuances of meaning, identifying and categorizing art terms that are included in homonyms, such as homographs and homophones, and analyzing their contextual meaning in art and in general meaning. The result of this study is that there are homonyms in art terms sourced from the MoMA official website. Of the 10 data analyzed, there are homonyms including homographs and no homophones were found. Of the ten art terms whose homonyms have been explained, this will reduce errors in interpretation of words that contain meaning in art terms and their general meaning.

Abstract

The use of relevant and concise wording in infographics is crucial to ensure that the information presented can be quickly and effectively understood by readers. However, existing infographics still need to strike a balance between information density and clarity of delivery. This study explores the relevance of words and meaning in student-created infographics, using Sperber & Wilson’s Relevance Theory (1986, 1995) as a framework. By analyzing three student-created infographics, the study identified the main structural elements of infographics: description (general overview), details (specific information), and significance (practical value). It also examined audience intentions, categorized as either informative or communicative. The results revealed that the "significance" element dominated all the infographics, underscoring the importance of the practical value and relevance of the information presented. Audiences were more likely to engage with infographics they found informative, although a balance between informative and communicative aspects—such as seen in Infographic 1—yielded optimal impact on audience comprehension and engagement. This study highlighted the importance of infographic design that emphasized word and meaning relevance to create effective communication. Recommendations are provided for more strategically integrating communicative elements to enhance the appeal and effectiveness of infographics in various communication contexts. Keywords: Relevance, Infographics, Relevance Theory, Visual Writing, Audience Understanding.

Abstract

This study investigated challenges in implementing Kurikulum Merdeka at the senior secondary school level, focusing on teaching English in the Curriculum 2013 and Kurikulum Merdeka (KM). It used document analyses to examine relevant curriculum documents and identify English teachers in Indonesia. It used in-depth semi-structured interviews to gain insights into two experienced and two inexperienced English teachers' challenges when implementing KM. The findings suggest that, notwithstanding their lengths of teaching experience, the teachers from both groups had similarities and differences regarding their reported challenges when they implemented KM. In terms of the similarities, their replies primarily focused on learning time and students’ reluctance towards learning English. They, however, had some prominent differences. The experienced teachers asserted more challenges in managing student-centered learning when learning and found it difficult to combine English subjects with other subjects. This study contributes to a better understanding of the implementation of KM in senior secondary schools. It provides valuable insights for English teachers and educators implementing the KM. It finally recommends that professional development programs emphasize enhancing teachers’ knowledge and competencies in applying student-centered learning activities and providing more teaching practice rather than administration management.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to describe the relationship between learning motivation (LM) and self-efficacy (SE) in English learning outcomes for EFL learners. LM and SE have significantly related to EFL learners’ learning outcomes. However, there is a need to thoroughly examine learning outcomes in language learning, particularly considering variations in students’ LM. This study aims to conduct a meta-analysis of correlation studies to evaluate the interaction of LM and SE on EFL students' learning outcomes. The evidence for the relationship between LM and SE in EFL students was analyzed using a meta-analysis. The study found that a random model was utilized, and the magnitude of the effect was exceptionally great (d.0576). The meta-analysis computed 11 effects, and the variable analysis moderator examined the study's source, sample size, student major, language learning target, educational level, and instrument type.

Abstract

This study investigates the motivations and attitudes towards learning English among law students in Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach, 54 law students from a prominent Indonesian university were surveyed. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were employed to examine relationships between motivational factors, attitudes, and self-assessed proficiency. The findings reveal strong instrumental motivation driven by career prospects and academic advancement. While students value English proficiency, a notable gap exists between perceived importance and self-assessed language skills, mainly speaking and listening. Challenges in legal vocabulary acquisition and oral communication were identified as key areas for improvement. The study also found a preference for multimedia and interactive learning methods. These insights provide valuable direction for enhancing legal English education in Indonesia, suggesting a more tailored, interactive, and technology-enhanced approach that addresses law students' specific needs and preferences.

Abstract

The new era confronts teachers with new tasks and obligations. The use of advanced technology has greatly improved the tradition of teaching English. Technology offers several options, such as making teaching more exciting and efficient. Technology is one of the most powerful drivers of social and linguistic change. As a result, it is necessary to use a learning medium that encourages students to be more enthusiastic about studying. This study intends to apply learning media with technology-assisted to students of SD Negeri Rutong, while also describing assessment media from professionals and users. The development approach utilized is Design and Development with the ADDIE research model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). The results obtained in this research are 1) Interactive multimedia named "Oxford Let’s Go for Young Learners"; 2) Media expert assessment 89,5%, material experts 91,7%, learning experts 92,4% based on the three assessments then the developed media belongs to the category of "Excellent"; 3) The assessment of 21 students gets a percentage of 74.8% in the category of "Good" which shows students satisfied with the developed media as a medium in learning English. However, further research is needed to determine the usefulness of multimedia use as a learning tool.

Abstract

This research investigates the types of conflict the protagonist faces in the movie “Wonka.” The collected data were adopted a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the external conflicts identified in the “Wonka” movie. Kenney’s literary theory (1966) was employed to understand the nature of the conflicts, and Thomas and Kilmann’s framework (1974) was utilized to explore the characters’ conflict resolution strategies. The results of this study indicate that the protagonist’s challenges predominantly involve external conflicts. Kenney (1966:19), in his work “How to Analyze Fiction,” defines conflict as a struggle between a principal character and another entity. External conflicts can manifest as man versus man, man versus nature, or man versus society. A total of ten instances of conflict were identified, comprising four instances of man versus man, five instances of man versus society, and one instance of man versus nature. However, this analysis will focus on three specific conflicts. Keywords: External Conflict, Main Character, Movie.
