Abstract

The feeding system greatly influences the chemical values and blood parameters of livestock. Biochemical determination of serum constituents can provide valuable information about nutritional status and environmental factors that affect animal health. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of animal feed formation which consisted of four types of rations with multilevel protein energy levels for total cholesterol, triglycerides and other routine blood parameters of the weaning female balinese cattle. The study was carried out by administering a ration formula for three months in 12 weaning female balinese cattle, aged nine months, body weight 101.3-104.3 kg. Randomized Block Design with four treatment was used in this research , e.g. A = PK 12% and ME 2000 kcal/kg; B = PK 13% and ME 2100 kcal/kg; C = PK 14% and ME 2200 kcal/kg; D = PK 15% and ME 2300 kcal/kg. Blood sampling was collected at the end of the experiment followed by examination of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and other routine hematological parameters in the laboratory. Examination of total cholesterol and triglycerides using the enzymatic colorimetry method. Measurement of routine blood parameters such as total erythrocytes, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit values, total leukocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes using an automatic hematology analyzer. The results obtained were total cholesterol: 122.0-146.33 mg/dl; triglycerides: 122.0-146.33 mg/dl. Meanwhile, the total erythrocytes are (6.6-7.0) x106 ìl; hemoglobin (10.3-11.3) g/dl; hematocrit (27.6-28.8)%; total leukocytes (7.8-10.3) x 103ìl; neutrophils (20,7-27,6%); eosinophils (0.08-0.3%); basophils (0.3-1.4%); lymphocytes (66.6-72.2%); monocytes (3.65.5%). All results are still in the normal cattle reference range. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) between treatments. It was concluded that the four ration formulas had no effect on total cholesterol, triglycerides, and other routine hematological parameters from the blood of the weaning female Bali cattle.

Abstract

The background of this study is to visualize histopathological changes on aorta of cirrhosis rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by endotoxin E. coli O55 : B5 This study was a laboratory experimental using complete randomized design with five treatments and five repetitions. Twenty five male Wistar rats were used as experimental model of cirrhosis by bile duct ligation (BDL) technique. Three weeks after BDL, all cirrhosis experimental models were induced with a single intra venous injection of Eschericia coli endotoxin (3mg/kg b.b in 1 ml sterile saline), except those of five control rats that induced with sterile saline at the same volume only. Aortas of control rats group were excised at 6 hours after induction with sterile saline, whereas the other four groups were done at 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours after induction with endotoxin. The quantity of endothelial cell, discontinuity increment and the thickness of internal elastic lamina layer were observed to know histopathological changes on aorta. Histopathological changes were observed using a light mycroscope, dyscontinuity and thickness of internal elastic lamina were measured by reticular micrometer. The quantity of endothelial cell on control and observation interval of 6 and 12 hours as significant difference (P<0.05), which are bigger than that of 18 and 24 hours. Rats in the control group have the biggest quantity comparing to the other treatments. Discontinuity and thickness of internal elastic lamina layer had significant difference (P<0.05) on control, observation on 6 and 12 hours compared to observation on 18 and 24 hours after being induced with endotoxine. The highest discontinuity and the thinnest elastic lamina internal were obtained within observation on 24 hours. VCAM-1 expression on control group differ from observation on 6 and 12hours but all of them have significant difference to observation on 18 and 24 hours (P<0,05). The decrease of endothelial cell number is caused by endothelial cell contact with endotoxin. Longer contact interval can make more severe injury and dysfunction. When the aorta had loss of its endothelial cell, internal elastic lamina will exposed with endotoxin directly. In the vessel, endotoxin cause nitric oxide (NO) release, that have antiproliferative characteristic for neointimal formation. This condition presumed to be the cause of the dyscontinuity increment and thickness decrement of internal elastic lamina of cirrhosis rats. VCAM-1 expression was influenced by quantity and condition of endothelial cell. The higher VCAM-1 expression in control group higher than the other group because the quntity and morphofunction of endothelial cell was better than that of 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours.

Abstract

The objective of this paper was to analyze economic impact of rabies in East Nusa Tenggara Province.Data from Health Department of East Nusa Tenggara Province (Period 1998-2007) were applied to a setof link the economics model. Analysis presented in this paper only costs related with PET, Vaccination andelimination of dogs. The total societal cost (PET in human) incurred by the disease was about Rp 19.9billion. The cost included transport cost to and from rabies-treatment centers, and loss of income whilereceiving treatment. The cost of vaccination was estimate about Rp 50.000 per dog and about 140.000dogs were vaccinated per year in the area. For this analysis, vaccination costs per dog included relatedcomponents on campaign organization, public awareness efforts, transport and biological and materialcosts. The economic losses due to the culling and vaccination program in dogs wes about Rp 5,3 and Rp 7billion per year, respectively. Total cost for vaccination and elimination of dog from 1998 through 2007 wasabout Rp 122,5 billion or Rp 12,3 billion per year. Total economic lost due to rabies in East Nusa TenggaraProvince during 1998-2007 was approximately 14,2 per year. The economic losses may be reduced byoptimalisation of rabies control in animal reservoir of rabies especially in dogs. The elimination of rabiesin dogs through mass vaccination with minimal coverage 70% of dog population is believed contribute tominimise rabies in human.

Abstract

H5N1 subtype Avian Influenza (AI) virus is the causal agent  of AI disease in humans. In Indonesia, the first human AI occurred in Tangerang 2005.  Human AI in Indonesia has now spread into 12 provinces, including West Java, Jakarta, Banten, North Sumatra, East Java, Central Java, Lampung, South Sulawesi,West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Riau, and Bali. Until 2011, the total human AI cases were 182 cases  with150 deaths. This study was conducted to identify of H5N1 AI virus in birds in area surrounding a humanAI human case  in Bekasi city  in March 2011 and to investigate its role in the spread of AI to humans usingmethods of Hemaglutination Inhibition (HI ), and Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction(RT-PCR). The result showed that 80% of birds in the area surrounding AI  surrounding H5N1 AI humancase in Bekasi 2011 were antibody negative  against  H5N1-AI virus. Antibody against H5N1-AI viruswith the titer less than 4 log 2 was detected in 4.4%  of birds and  with antibody titer 04 4-7 log 2 in 15%of birds. By RT-PCR, H5N1 AI virus was not detected in 47.6% of bird samples. H5 positive and N1negative  AI virus was detected in  30.2% samples.  Only 11.2% samples showed positive for H5N1 AI virus. The results suggest that H5N1-AI virus affecting birds may have a positive role in transmitting to thevirus to human in Bekasi 2011.

Abstract

Commonly, native chicken is raised in an extensive management system. The chickens were free toscavenge in the backyard, and eat a wide variety of feeds including, rice, corn, insects, or even grit. Grit is anabrasive material that can help to grind feedstuffs and use as a source of mineral for chicken. In anintensive farming system, native chickens are given full feeding program throughout the production period, without grit. The objective of this research was to study the development of gastrointestinal tract andcarcass bone of native chickens supplemented to grit. Eighty chickens were used in the study usingrandomized block design. The four treatments were: R0 = basal feeds without grit ; R1 = R0 + grit 0,25% ofbody weight ; R2 = R0 + grit 0,50% of body weight ; R3 = R0 + grit 0,75% of body weight. The results showedthat administration of grit up to the level of 0.75% body weight significantly increased grit consumption, digestive tract length, gizzard weight and carcass bone weight of native chicken.

Abstract

Tree frog (Polypedates celebensis) is an endemic amphibi found in Southeast Sulawesi. Database ofthis species, in particular genetic databases is still very limited. The purpose of this research was tocharacterize the partial gene cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) of tree frog (P. celebensis). Frog sampleswere collected from Tanjung Peropa Wildlife Reserve, Moramo, Southeast Sulawesi, and extracted theirDNA genome, and amplified using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, with specific primers, and then sequenced. Characterization was done by comparing the COI gene with another COI gene fromother frog (data available on GenBank). The results showed that the COI gene fragment P. celebensisconsisted of 665 base pairs. These fragment gene had 99% conserved nucleotides, and only 1% nucleotidesthat varied. Nine sites of nucleotide varied namely: 65th, 98th, 101th, 358th, 396th, 403th, 405th, 424th, and426th. These sites of nucleotide varied can be used as genetic markers for P. celebensis. Composition ofnitrogenous bases P. celebensis COI gene fragment were 29.9% timine, 28.9% cytocine, 22.0% adenine, and19.2% guanine. Molecular phylogeny of P. celebensis based on 665 bp of their COI gene suggests that thesespecies was monophyletic. It is concluded that the gene fragment of cytochrome C oxidase of tree frog (P.celebensis) the origin of Wildlife Moramo, Southeast Sulawesi, has conserved nucleotides more thannucleotides that varied. These varied nucleotides can be used as genetic markers especially for the treefrog origin of Wildlife Moramo, Southeast Sulawesi. The most nitrogenous bases is thymine, while thefewest is guanine. Molecular phylogeny based on cytochrome C oxidase gene is monophyletic

Abstract

Endocardiosis is a disease commonly found in Pomeranian dog characterized by progressive myxomatousdegeneration of the atrio-ventricular valves especially in the mitral valve. The purpose of this study was todefine the diagnose and severeity of this disease on the Pomeranian by using brightness mode, motion mode, dan color flow Doppler echocardiography technique. Echocardiography was performed on 8 Pomeranianconsisting of 6 males and 2 females with age range of 2-14 years. Brightness mode echocardiography wasused to see the echotexture of endocardium, mitral valve, and the valve movement. The results showedendocardium thickening, along with chronic fibrosis and nodular thickening of the anterior and posteriormitral valve leaflet. Three out of seven cases showed prolapsed of the mitral valve. Motion modeechocardiography was performed in order to measure left ventricle internal dimension, myocardium thickness, fractional shortening, left atrial and aortic dimension. The results showed myocardium thickening, alongwith left atrial enlargement. Color flow Doppler echocardiography was used to confirm the mitral valveregurgitation. Three of seven cases showed the presence of regurgitation signed by turbulence color of theprolapsed mitral valve. Based on the degree of severity, scoring system used in this study, endocardiosis canbe divided into three types that are mild, moderate and severe.

Abstract

The study was conducted in North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and Central Sulawesi during March untilOctober 2011. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of fruit bats  (P. alecto) as sourceof meat. Observed variables were body weight, carcass weight, noncarcass weight, the bone weight, meatweight, fat weight, and skin weight, respectively. To estimate the growth rate of the bats, analysis of therelationship between body weight and carcass components was done, while estimation of  growth rate ofcarcass components were analyzed by multiple linear regression. The results showed that the carcassproduction of  P. alecto in the three locations was 54.49%-56.55%, meat production was 45.37% -54.07%,and the coefficient of determination was 0.65-0.99.  Conclusions of this study is that the body weight  canbe used for  prediction  of growth rate, and weight of carcass, meat, bone, fat, and skin of the fruit bats, respectively.
