Abstract

The development of three-dimensional creation techniques using metal materials, particularly stainless steel, provides opportunities for artists and designers to explore unique and aesthetically valuable organic curves, especially in functional objects such as furniture, interior accessories, public sculptures, and metal crafts. These biomorphic forms are chosen because they differ from common geometric shapes and can create visual appeal. This research aims to explore the application of the SMAW welding technique on stainless steel rods to create three-dimensional artworks with organically inspired forms. The study employs a practice-based research method, combining direct practice with result analysis to generate new knowledge. The technique used is Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), which utilizes heat from an electric arc between a shielded electrode and the base metal to melt and fuse the materials into a solid alloy. In this research, 4 mm diameter stainless steel rods were used as the primary material, and the process included preparation, welding execution, grinding, polishing, documentation, and practice-based analysis. The findings demonstrate the successful application of the SMAW technique in forming betta fish fins with organic curve characteristics. This work proves that practice-based research is an effective approach for generating artistic and design innovations through material and technique exploration. This research contributes to the development of experimental material-based metal crafts and enriches contemporary art discourse by creating original works through the innovative application of the SMAW welding technique to stainless steel rods in producing complex three-dimensional organic forms, such as betta fish fins, which have rarely been explored in previous studies.

Abstract

This study examines the visual characteristics of vernacular stilt-house architecture in Wana Village, East Lampung, through three sketching techniques: drawing pen, drawing pen with watercolor, and drawing pen with colored pencils. This traditional house was chosen because it holds significant architectural and cultural value as a representation of the local identity of the Lampung community, reflecting adaptation to the tropical environment, the use of natural materials, and traditional construction systems passed down through generations. Amid the ongoing modernization that threatens to alter and diminish local architectural traditions, this study is crucial as an effort to document and preserve visual knowledge that represents the interrelation between architecture, culture, and environment. The purpose of this research is to explore how different visual media influence architectural representation in terms of detail, texture, depth, and visual nuance. The study employs a qualitative exploratory, experimental approach within the framework of practice-based research. Data were obtained from photographic documentation of vernacular stilt houses, which served as visual references during the reflective sketching process. The results show that each medium produces distinct aesthetic and cultural interpretations: drawing pen emphasizes structural clarity; the combination of drawing pen and watercolor presents harmony between architecture and the environment; while drawing pen with colored pencils conveys more personal and emotional expression. Through artistic reflection and iterative evaluation, this creative practice provides new insights into the relationship between visual action and cultural meaning. The study concludes that reflective sketching can serve as a visual research method that integrates artistic knowledge, aesthetic experience, and the identity of vernacular architecture.

Abstract

Abstract

Ancient manuscripts are artifacts that indicate high intellectual abilities in old civilizations. The content is very valuable as well as a means of communicating and expressing ideas that can provide information about civilization and past life. Javanese society is one of the communities who inherited ancient manuscripts. The manuscript is decorated with beautiful illuminations that signify the aesthetics of the creators. The illumination has a n implied value and becomes a trace of the cultural identity of the society. The values implied in the manuscript will be much more useful if it is disseminated to provide high moral understanding and insight. In addition, ancient manuscripts can be a source of inspiration for creation that can support efforts to perpetuate cultural heritage in the archipelago. This paper discusses the results of research originating from the transformation process of ancient manuscript illumination into batik. The research method used is descriptive qualitative by making batik motifs based on visual manuscript illumination supported by the results of interviews with ancient manuscript experts and batik experts. The results of this study are expected to support batik motifs in Indonesia. Keywords: ancient manuscripts; batik; illumination; motiftransformation
