Abstract

Literary works are created from human feelings; the emotions are written through words and give aesthetic value to the audience. A short story is a short form of narrative literature that works similarly to a novel but is not longer than a novel and the plot of the story is simpler and it can be finished in one sitting. A short story is not simply built by ‘words’, there are components or elements that build the story until the end. Recognizing and identifying the structure of a short story is important; it is one of the ways to show appreciation for the literature and help people understand the implied meaning in it. In this article, the findings are conducted through intrinsic elements analysis of the selected short story entitled “The Oval Portrait” by Edgar Alan Poe. The story is analyzed in digital form and it is taken from a website on the internet. The descriptive qualitative method is used in the article to help interpret the elements found in the story. The results show that there are four significant intrinsic elements in the short story: plot, character, setting and narrative perspective.

Abstract

In this research, the researchers will conduct an analysis of “Earth’s Answer” by William Blake. The purpose of this research is to explore the sense of oppression in the content of the poem. The method utilized for this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The main focus of the research is the indications of oppression found in the poem, through symbols used by Blake, which examined stanza by stanza. Researchers found that the signs of oppression from the poem are taken from the words such as “prisoned,” “chained,” “darkness,” “dread,” and “drear.” By analyzing the background of the author, major theme, poetic devices, literary devices, and also examined each stanza of the poetry, it can be concluded that this poetry involves the subject of oppression. The results underscore the absence of hope, injustice, and incarceration, due to one of the impacts of the Industrial Revolution, as well as other oppressive elements found in the poem. The idea of oppression can be found in each stanza either explicitly or implicitly.

Abstract

The practice of legitimizing men’s dominance is known as hegemonic masculinity, and it is a concept that has often been explored through numerous adult novels, but rarely in children’s literature. To address this research gap, this study conducted a text analysis on the types of hegemonic masculinity depictions in Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, as one of the most read novels by young readers who attend schools with an international curriculum. The researchers used the descriptive qualitative method hand in hand with Connell and Messerschmidt’s theory of hegemonic masculinity. The result showed 3 types of hegemonic masculinity displayed in the novel include toxic masculinity, bad boy archetype, and dominant-submissive roles. These types can influence young to imitate bad role model, engage in bullying, and develop an unhealthy habit of hiding their feelings. Young readers may begin to see mischievous, manipulating, and aggressive behaviour as a common thing to do or even should be done to establish their place in society. Tom Sawyer is mandatory reading in the curriculum and is a classic that is unlikely to be taken off of the syllabus, so this study recommends teachers to make students become aware of the underlying ideas and values implicated in the novels. This study presented the implication for schools which assigned the reading of “Tom Sawyer” to address the reality of hegemonic masculinity in the novel to reduce the possible effect of its themes.

Abstract

This study is research that focuses on the relationship between parents and their daughters and the impact it has on the main female character in drama Romeo and Juliet. The analysis shows that the role of parents, especially fathers, in determining their daughter's life, including marriage matters, has a huge influence on the decision her daughter takes when she chooses the man she loves over the man her parents chose because it ended tragically. The parenting style of the parents, especially the father, at that time had changed his daughter from obedient to rebellious, even though she had to lose her life. The study conducted library research in the process of writing this thesis. The data were taken from the original version Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet ebook (1957), Global Grey. The theory proposed by Greenbalt (1982) with the social and cultural context approach by Long (2024) is used in analyzing what kind of the relationship between the parents and their daughter in this drama resulted in a tragedy at the end of the story. The discovery was that the very big role of a father in his daughter's life, especially in determining her life partner, had made his daughter take a very brave decision which ended tragically but everything is to late.
