Abstract

Students’ engagement is crucial for the success of listening activities, especially at the junior high school level. This study aimed to enhance students’ engagement in English listening activities using EDpuzzle, focusing on eighth-grade A students at SMP Islam Al-Azhar 17 Pontianak. Conducted over two cycles with 20 participants, the study addressed issues like distractions, disengagement, difficulty understanding audio, and feelings of frustration. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, involving two cycles of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Instruments used included observation checklists, tests, and field notes. Qualitative analysis showed a marked increase in engagement during the second cycle, after introducing EDpuzzle Station Challenge activities. EDpuzzle’s interactive features—visually engaging content, embedded questions, and the option to rewatch videos—made the listening experience more accessible and enjoyable. This boosted cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement, leading to better attendance, active participation, and fewer disruptions. Descriptive statistics revealed notable improvements, with 86.67% of students showing higher emotional engagement, 78.33% displaying increased cognitive engagement, and 86.67% showing improved behavioral engagement. Additionally, 85% of students scored above the success threshold in listening comprehension tests, particularly in identifying degrees of comparison and summarizing video content. In conclusion, EDpuzzle enhanced students’ engagement by creating a more interactive and enjoyable learning environment.

Abstract

While research on digital language learning materials has received lots of attention, there was a scarcity of studies focusing on specific locations, like Sambas in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Located near the border of Indonesia and Malaysia, Sambas has a unique EFL learning environment influenced by its geographical location and diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Understanding students' needs and preferences in local contexts is crucial in designing culturally relevant teaching materials. This study aimed to assess the needs and preferences of students in Sambas and provided valuable insights into optimizing the utilization of digital teaching materials for English language learning. This study employed a survey research design to elicit information about current materials, the student's needs, perceptions, and preferences concerning digital materials in English students' needs and preferences, and technological resources. The participants of this study were first-year students of junior secondary school (20 students) in Sambas. The findings revealed that students need videos, movies, and songs with English subtitles as learning materials. Furthermore, the study might shape future research in developing and implementing digital EFL materials customized to the Sambas' cultural context, including local language, customs, and traditions, and their effectiveness in engaging students and improving English language acquisition.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the need for students' workbooks based on local wisdom in the Merdeka Curriculum for junior high school students, particularly at SMPN 3 Air Besar. The study is motivated by the importance of local wisdom in shaping students' character and identity, as well as the need for appropriate teaching materials that can support the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. This study employed a survey research design to elicit information. To identify the students' needs, data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations. The interviews were conducted with students, English teachers, and villagers to gather in-depth information about the students' needs in the materials design. The study proposes various positions for EFL teachers to perform, including visionaries, cultural mediators on a local level, intercultural educators, and role model practitioners. It offers strategies for EFL teachers to include local cultural elements into their classroom instruction, such as establishing a local culturally responsive pedagogy, cultural sensitivity and awareness, and leveraging technology and information to support teaching. Incorporating local culture into EFL teaching can benefit students by raising cultural awareness, developing cultural literacy, building intercultural competence, enhancing language learning experiences, and acquiring skills in eliciting meaning. By using a workbook that takes into account the specific requirements of the students, teachers can better address their learning needs and create a more effective and engaging learning environment. It is recommended that English language teachers utilize the workbook that is based on local wisdom, as it aligns with the Indonesian National Educational System and the current Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes the relation between teaching English and the learners' closest environment for meaningful language use. Overall, the study focuses on exploring the need for a supplementary workbook that integrates local wisdom and culture into English language teaching, aiming to enhance students' language proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills.

Abstract

This study explores the role of AI-powered pronunciation tools in supporting English learners in multilingual classrooms, focusing on 7th-grade students at Pelita Cemerlang School in Pontianak who express a dislike for learning English. The study aims to explore learners’ experiences and perceptions of these tools, particularly how they influence motivation and engagement in pronunciation practice. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, with interviews conducted with a sample of 20 participants to gather in-depth insights. The findings suggest that AI-powered pronunciation tools provide personalized feedback that helps students identify and correct pronunciation errors, making the learning process more interactive and engaging. For instance, students reported noticeable improvements in their ability to produce challenging sounds and patterns. However, the tools were found to be most effective when complemented by traditional teacher-led instruction. The study concludes that AI-driven technologies can play a valuable role in pronunciation practice for students with low motivation, though their integration into the classroom should consider diverse learner needs and preferences.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the students' writing ability by analyzing the student's analytical exposition text through qualitative research. The research subjects in this study consist of 30 eleventh-grade students from SMAN 1 Sungai Raya. The researchers employ 6-traits of writing rubrics to examine the students’ works. The findings mainly focus on two pivotal aspects, which are the development of students' ideas and organization and their proficiency in students' written conventions. The analysis shows that the majority of the students are able to write a simple and clear main idea. The researcher found that most of the students use multiple details or reasons to support the main idea. They are capable of constructing the analytical exposition text, which elaborates ideas, supports, and details the language features and generic structure of the text, and the writing convention. Based on the analysis of conventions in students’ writing, the students demonstrate varied levels of competence in writing conventions, showing strengths in some areas like punctuation and grammar but facing challenges, particularly in spelling and specific aspects of capitalization. In conclusion, they have good basic writing skills but need practice and exposure to writing English.

Abstract

Writing skills are one of the skills students learn at the senior high school level. This research aims to discover how Grammarly can increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text for the tenth-grade students of SMAN 01 Sekadau Hilir. This research was done using a pre-experimental design that used one group of pretest and post-test types. The research findings showed that the t-test result with the degree of freedom (df) = 35 and significant level (α = 0.05) was 15.07, and the t-table was 1.690. It shows that the t-test was higher than the t-table (15.07 > 1.690). It can be inferred that the use of Grammarly to increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text is effective. It can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Furthermore, the result of the effect size was 2.51, which is categorized as a strong effect. Therefore, the use of Grammarly to increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text was effective with a significant effect.
