Abstract

This paper is focusing on the representation of Grief in the short story of Anatomy of the Aftermath by Karen Jones. Grief is an emotional experience triggered by the loss of something or someone that a person loves, often involving the process of detachment. Then, grief also helps individuals feel closer to the object of love, honor their memories, or fill the void left behind. Karen Jones' flash fiction explores the story of a woman who feels sadness, regret, and longing for her husband's voice after his death. Through qualitative method, this article explores symbols and motifs of the woman's desire to hear her husband's voice and the love that still exists between them despite their separation. Through Kubler Ross’ theory of grief, this paper suggests that if a person can navigate the process well, they can experience normal and healthy grief. In conclusion, it is noted that grief could have two faces of being constructive and destructive. Both aspects are thickly indicated in Jones’ flash fiction.

Abstract

This article describes the senses of revenge and/or justice in Inglourious Basterds, particularly through the characters of Shoshanna Dreyfus, Aldo Raine and the Basterds, and Hans Landa. Universal Pictures released this 2009 film directed by Quentin Tarantino. The writers of this article employ a qualitative method, which allows the reader to learn more about the object's background. These revenge and/or justice scenes describe how revenge and/or justice intertwine in this film. The characters play great actings by indicating that such retaliation is always meaningful, giving inner satisfaction but also contains such justice to the perpetrator. Taking revenge in this film then means as a tool to realize the best way to eliminate the roots of evil that is in line with realizing justice either. In conclusion, the senses of revenge and/or justice in Inglorious Basterds is interpreted flexibly by underlining the characters’ dialogues alongside the ambience of the Nazis’ deeds in World War II.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper investigates the realities of literature adaptation to film in today’s world of literary criticism. People enjoy motion pictures and compare them with its original textual Literature. By focusing on literary criticism theories, this article explains modern to postmodern aesthetic points, especially in the era of definitions in romanticism, reflectionism and its auto, empiricism until pragmatism, and the age of language beyond communication. Through those former points, the adaptation of Literature to film brings in a wider point: the world itself. The adaptation is shown to broaden concepts and interpretations among writers, directors, and also audiences. Every aspect is so active to interpret in today's crisscrossed world that meanings vary from critical and evaluation perspectives. The adaptation is not about merely fixed definitions or even market orientations but open meanings on dialogues among realities. Any measurement from Literature or film is never enough to compare adaptation to its original form since it is located between individualities and societies. In conclusion, the adaptation of Literature should indicate that dominations must be minimized by maximizing hospitality of differences.

Abstract

This study investigates disablism and its impacts in Kate Chopin’s flash fiction entitled The Blind Man. Chopin straightforwardly writes that the blind man, as the main character, is discriminated against because of his disability. This is called disablism; it occurs when people have a negative viewpoint, undermine someone with a disability, and bring harm or prolonged hatred to them. Through the theory of disablism and qualitative analysis, this research explores disablism and its impacts in both real life and literature. Chopin’s flash fiction proves that treatment toward human beings is never neutral, but always identity-related. Meanwhile, disabled people should be regarded as human beings, not through their disabilities. In conclusion, Chopin’s story opens people’s eyes to humanize others, especially those with physical limitations.
