Abstract

This research analyzes the exposition of trauma in Gabriel Osorio's 2016 short film Bear Story. The film reflects his historical experience under Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile and tells the story of an old Bear who creates a mechanical diorama depicting the loss of his family due to the dictatorship's oppression. This research uses a narrative and symbol analysis approach to investigate how collective and individual trauma is manifested through visual, narrative and symbolic elements in the film. Trauma is implied in the protagonist's emotional journey as he faces bitter memories of exile, torture and separation. Cinematic techniques such as the use of a soft color palette, melancholic music, and diorama mechanics as a metaphor for the process of memory and healing emphasize the psychological impact of trauma. The results of this study show that Bear stories are not just a form of artistic expression, but also serve as a medium of healing and historical memory for the victims and the wider community. In conclusion, Bear Story emphasizes film as a communicative tool to think trauma, memory, and resistance to oppression in related sociopolitical contexts.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between gender diversity and financial performance in Islamic banking, focusing in particular on the moderating effect of Sharia governance. Methods:  Data about female representation on bank boards, in bank top management, gender diversity in recruitment, and an index of five Sharia Governance elements are collected. Moreover, financial performance is assessed using multiple indicators. Results:  The results of this study illustrate a strong positive correlation between bank financial performance and gender diversity at the board, executive level, and organizational level. A key aspect of this study is the finding that Sharia Governance indeed positively moderates the relationship, further improving the financial impact of gender diversity. This finding is supported through robust sensitivity analysis and variation in performance indicators. It supports further and confirms the synergic positive relationship between ethical governance and diverse leadership.Novelty: The original contribution of this study is the integration between gender diversity and Sharia theory to the emerging Sharia governance theory, going beyond traditional corporate governance models. This approach does not consider Sharia governance as an independent factor but rather as an enhancing moderator to the financial return of other factors, offering a new and ethically valid perspective to the business case on faith-based institutions’ inclusion.Research Implication: In practical terms, this encourages regulators and Islamic finance councils to prioritize Shariah governance and gender inclusion, both as strategic drivers of sustainable performance and ethical compliance across the global industry

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the concept of surveillance is carried out by Montgomery in his role as the father figure with authority in the novel Dark Horses by Susan Mihalic in 2021. The researchers use a qualitative method and explorative approach, focusing on contexts and in-depth subjective interpretations. The surveillance is supported by Michel Foucault’s ideas on surveillance, normalization, and disciplinary actions. The analysis looks at how Jack, Roan's father, uses surveillance to control Roan's behavior and enforce normalization and disciplinary actions. This surveillance reflects the father's role as the authoritative figure in the family as reflection of governmentality. In conclusion, the study confirms that Jack's surveillance over Roan proves a father can control the actions and behavior of family members to ensure they follow his rules and desires.

Abstract

Confusion of Tongues stated by Sándor Ferenczi to show problematic relations between adults and children. He asserts traumatism, done by adults and experienced by children, may shape different perceptions in process. Emphasized by psychoanalysis, desire of love is so dominating that could result to violence. My Oedipus Complex is Frank O’ Connor’s short story that features perfect relationship of a child named Larry and his mother that is disturbed by return of his father from war. The mother tells his father as a puzzle then he becomes enemy for Larry for taking mother’s side. The child’s purity shifted into hate; from being accompanied to lonely and from being close to having distance. So, how is confusion of tongues analyzed in Frank O’ Connor’s My Oedipus Complex? Through qualitative method on Ferenczi’s perspective, this paper indicates psychoanalytic understandings in how language of mother disconcerted by child. The passion of love may break the heart of a child who loses that. Language of desire is reflection of not only giving but also obsessing and possessing. In conclusion, underlining confusion of tongues explains how passion could affect child differently. Any determination of love could always be misinterpreted especially through losing it.
