Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing volume of digital information that may lead to information overload among students, particularly when using digital academic references. The main problem addressed in this research is students’ limited ability to select, evaluate, and effectively use information amid the abundance of available sources. This study aims to analyze the effect of information literacy on students’ information overload in the use of digital academic references. A quantitative approach with a descriptive survey design was employed. The population consisted of students from the Library and Information Science Program at Universitas Negeri Padang from the 2023–2025 cohorts, with a total sample of 73 respondents selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and preliminary interviews and analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The findings indicate that information literacy has a significant effect on information overload, with a significance value of p < .001 and a t-value of 5.611. The coefficient of determination of 30.7% shows that information literacy contributes to students’ ability to manage information overload. These findings suggest that higher levels of information literacy enhance students’ capacity to select, evaluate, and use digital academic references effectively, thereby minimizing the risk of information overload. This study contributes to the literature on information literacy and digital academic behavior by providing empirical evidence of the role of information literacy in managing excessive information exposure. Practically, the findings imply the need to strengthen information literacy programs in higher education to improve students’ critical and effective use of digital academic references.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the practice of digitizing undergraduate theses at the Library of Andalas University as part of the institutional repository development strategy. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through observation, interviews with three librarians and two students, as well as direct involvement of the researcher in the digitization workflow. The findings reveal that the digitization process has been systematically implemented through several stages, including collection identification, document scanning, file editing, metadata preparation, and uploading to the institutional repository scholar.unand.ac.id. The primary objectives of digitization include addressing the limitations of physical storage space, mitigating structural risks caused by geographical conditions, and expanding access to students’ scholarly works. Nevertheless, several challenges persist, such as the absence of formal university-level policies, outdated equipment, technical difficulties in handling large file sizes, and limited staff training. From the user perspective, difficulties were found in slow self-upload processes, unreadable files, and suboptimal search accuracy. Based on these findings, this study emphasizes that evaluating digitization practices not only provides an overview of achievements and obstacles but also generates strategic recommendations for further development. These recommendations include integrating digitization into official university policies, upgrading technological infrastructure, and enhancing staff capacity to ensure that the institutional repository can function optimally as a sustainable medium for preservation and scholarly dissemination.

Abstract

Background: Digital preservation of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) is fundamental to sustaining scholarly output in higher education institutions; however, empirical investigations into user satisfaction and socio-technical challenges within self-deposit models globally remain limited, especially in local Indonesian context. Purpose: This study examined satisfaction levels and implementation challenges in ETD digital preservation through self-deposit in the institutional repository of Universitas Andalas, Indonesia. Methods: Employing a sequential mixed-methods design, quantitative data were collected via a satisfaction survey administered to 174 students who completed the self-deposit process. Analysis used descriptive statistics and validity testing in SPSS, while qualitative insights were derived from semi-structured interviews with repository administrators and library staff, supplemented by workflow observations and analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: Results revealed a procedurally structured self-deposit workflow constrained by technical limitations: students reported moderate overall satisfaction (M = 3.46), with the lowest ratings for system performance, especially stability and upload speed, and persistent difficulties with file uploads, metadata completion, and comprehension of deposit guidelines. Conversely, administrative support received the highest satisfaction scores, highlighting users' continued reliance on human assistance. Conclusion: Self-deposit alone is insufficient for effective ETD preservation in resource-constrained environments; its sustainability hinges on integrating a robust technical infrastructure with consistent human support to bridge the socio-technical gap between system design and user capabilities. Implications: Theoretically, this study contributes to digital preservation literature by foregrounding socio-technical interdependencies in self-deposit adoption beyond Western contexts. In practice, it offers actionable recommendations for repository managers in developing countries, including infrastructure upgrades to enhance system reliability, simplifying metadata schemas and user interfaces, and embedding editor support during the deposit process to strengthen repository sustainability and user autonomy.

Abstract

The development of social media in the digital era has transformed the way people access and disseminate information. In addition to serving as a communication platform, social media has become a fast and far-reaching medium for information dissemination. However, the effectiveness of information dissemination continues to face several challenges, including low levels of digital literacy, limited public trust in information, and the overwhelming flow of online content. This study uses Sadam Permana as the research object because of his consistent efforts in presenting information on social issues through simple and easily understandable content. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of content creator Sadam Permana on the effectiveness of information dissemination in digital society. This research employed a quantitative approach using a descriptive method. The study population consisted of approximately 467,000 followers of Sadam Permana's TikTok account as of the end of February 2026. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique, resulting in 100 respondents. Data were analyzed using the normality test, correlation test, linearity test, hypothesis test, and coefficient of determination test with the assistance of SPSS version 25. The findings indicate that Sadam Permana, as a content creator, has a significant influence on the effectiveness of information dissemination in digital society. The content creator variable obtained a mean score of 3.13, while the information dissemination effectiveness variable achieved a mean score of 2.92, both of which fall into the high category. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R Square) value of 0.553 indicates that the content creator variable explains 55.3% of the variance in information dissemination effectiveness, while the remaining 44.7% is influenced by other factors not examined in this study.
