Abstract

Indonesia has a place to train elephants called the Elephant Training Center/PLG. The forerunner of PLG in Indonesia is in Lampung, precisely in Way Kambas National Park/TNWK. Way Kambas National Park is a conservation area in Lampung Province based on the Decree of the Minister of Forestry Number 670/Kpts-II/1999 dated August 26, 1999, with an area of 125,631.31 ha. The purpose of this study was to obtain data and information on the implementation of educational-based tourism, to analyze the implementation of educational-based tourism in PLG (Indonesia) and to provide a new paradigm on elephant management based on the principle of Animal welfare as a consideration in determining PLG (Indonesia) policies in the future. The method used is the literature review research method. Viewed from the perspective of the existence of veterinarians in PLG Indonesia, educational elephant tourism with an Animal welfare approach can be implemented. Educational elephant tourism with an Animal welfare approach is a discourse that can be implemented in PLG throughout Indonesia related to the availability of facilities and medical personnel. The concept of educational tourism with an Animal welfare approach provides a new paradigm to tourists regarding the concept of tourism with an attraction object in the form of elephants with a new touch, namely utilizing elephants elegantly without the impression of elephant exploitation. The use of elephants as an attraction object with an exploration pattern of all natural elephant activities that are modified as a result of a collection of wild elephant taming methods to become tame which are referenced from the Thai method can be developed through the concept of educational tourism with an Animal welfare approach.

Abstract

The Index and Sustainability Status play an important role in ensuring the sustainable management of Forest Resources. The objective of this study is to analyze the index value and sustainability status of the management of Wan Abdur Rachman Grand Forest Park in the Sumber Sari Forest Farmers Group in social and economic dimensions. This research employs qualitative and quantitative approaches through observations and interviews. The community sample was obtained using a census method. The data collected were analyzed using multidimensional scaling with the Rapid Fisheries Assessment software. This software is used to assess sustainability status in social and economic aspects of the management. The research results indicate that the forest management in Wan Abdur Rachman Grand Forest Park by Sumber Sari Forest Farmers Group is categorized as quite sustainable. This status is reflected by the high sensitivity values in the community income attribute and accessibility (economic dimension), as well as the community participation attribute in management and the level of education of the community (social dimension). The improvement of road infrastructure, the selection of high-value commodities, training in forest product processing, and the socialization of forest product marketing need to be carried out by the government to achieve a status of very sustainable management.

Abstract

Abstract

The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is one of three species of Asian elephant which has become one of the priority wild animals on the island of Sumatra by Indonesian government policy. This species has been categorized as critically endangered (CE) according to the IUCN in 2012. One of the nature reserves in Way Kambas National Park (TNWK) is the Elephant Training Center (PLG) which is a breeding ground for Sumatran elephants and functions as a place for animal conservation. The average quantity of elephant faeces in the WKNP is 5,090 kg/day from a total of 61 tame elephants in both the PLG and the Elephant Response Unit (ERU). This waste is not used optimally, so it is feared that it will pollute the environment if it is not handled properly and appropriately. This PKM activity aims to increase public understanding regarding the importance of processing elephant feces through the production of block compost. PKM activities were carried out at the Rawa Bunder Research Center in Way Kambas National Park, Labuhan Ratu District, East Lampung Regency on June 21 2023. The method used in carrying out PKM activities was carried out through the FGD (Focus Group Discussion) method, namely providing material and discussion or asking questions responsibility and practice of block composting. Respondents who represented the community around Rawa Bunder experienced an increase in understanding after participating in PKM. They obtained an average pretest score of 8.45 and a posttest of 9.30. Increased understanding of around 0.85 after giving material to the community.
