Abstract

AbstractChildren with special needs have the same rights to grow, develop, and live independently, including in the implementation of clean and healthy living behaviors. One important aspect of PHBS is the ability to self-manage handwashing practices. However, cognitive, motor, and adaptive limitations in ABK often present challenges in learning proper handwashing practices. The results of an initial survey at the Musi Rawas State Special Needs School (SLB Negeri) indicate the need for ongoing support and mentoring in strengthening students' self-management skills related to PHBS, particularly handwashing practices, as well as the challenge for teachers in providing oral health education that is easily understood by students. This community service activity aims to improve the ability to self-manage handwashing in children with special needs through optimizing the use of interactive animated videos. The activities were carried out with ABK students at all levels. The methods used included health education, practical mentoring, and the use of integrated interactive animated video media. The media was designed to be simple, attractive, and equipped with interactive elements to increase children's understanding and engagement in the learning process. Evaluation of the activity was carried out through observations of self-management handwashing skills before and after the intervention. The results of the community service showed an increase in students' ability to perform the stages of handwashing with soap more independently. This activity demonstrates that the use of interactive animated videos can be an effective and applicable PHBS education medium for children with special needs and has the potential to support the role of schools and families in fostering children's health on an ongoing basis. Keywords: children with special needs; self-care skills; handwashing; animated video.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance the knowledge and capacity of the Berkat Farmer Group in Noekele Village, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, through the implementation of a sustainable agrosilvopastoral system based on multifunctional crops, namely gmelina, Gamma Umami grass, and butterfly pea flowers. The program was implemented using an educative and participatory approach, with evaluation instruments in the form of assessment rubrics analyzed descriptively. The results of the program showed an improvement in community understanding of the agrosilvopastoral concept and the benefits of multifunctional crops in supporting sustainable livestock feed availability. The implementation of the integrated planting system was considered easy to apply and has the potential to improve land-use efficiency, livestock feed stability, and community welfare. This activity demonstrates that an agrosilvopastoral approach based on multifunctional crops is a relevant strategy for sustainable land and livestock management in East Nusa Tenggara.

Abstract

Background: Globally, the incidence of appendicitis is approximately 100–150 per 100,000 population and remains one of the most common causes of abdominal surgery in children. The use of Virtual Reality (VR) as a non-pharmacological distraction technique in managing postoperative pain after appendectomy is still limited, particularly in nursing practice in Indonesia. Poorly managed pain can lead to physical disturbances, increased anxiety, behavioral changes, and delayed recovery. In addition to pharmacological therapy, pain can also be managed through non-pharmacological methods such as distraction techniques, including VR, which provides an immersive visual experience to divert children’s attention from pain. Objective: This study aims to describe the application of VR-based distraction media in reducing pain intensity in children after appendectomy. Methods: This study used a case study approach involving two pediatric patients who had undergone appendectomy. The nursing diagnosis established was acute pain. The intervention involved the use of entertainment-based VR for 10–15 minutes during the recovery period over three days (postoperative days 1 to 3). Pain intensity was measured before and after the intervention using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and behavioral responses were also observed. Results: The VR intervention showed a reduction in pain intensity from moderate (scale 6) to mild (scale 3) in both subjects. Additionally, there was an improvement in behavioral responses, indicated by reduced grimacing, decreased anxiety, increased cooperation, and relaxation during the recovery period. The nursing diagnosis of acute pain was considered resolved. Conclusion: The use of VR can be an alternative non-pharmacological intervention to help reduce pain and improve behavioral responses in children after appendectomy.
