Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze the implementation of information technology integration in learning descriptive text reading skills in the 7th grade of SMP Nahdlatul Wathan Mataram. This study uses a case study approach with descriptive qualitative methods. In-depth observations were conducted in two stages during the Indonesian language learning process that integrated information technology, focusing on descriptive text reading skills. The research location is SMP Nahdlatul Wathan Mataram, Jalan Kaktus No. 1-3 Gomong, Mataram. The subjects of the study are 21 students from the 7th grade of SMP Nahdlatul Wathan Mataram. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, as well as documentation. The research results show that the integration of information technology in learning, particularly the use of projectors and Chromebooks to access e-book applications, has a significant impact and increases the efficiency and effectiveness of the learning process for reading descriptive texts. The use of this technology stimulates active student participation and expands their understanding of the descriptive texts being studied. Students show high enthusiasm in interacting with technology-based learning media. However, there are several identified obstacles, including limited internet access in some school areas and the lack of participation and motivation from some students during group discussion stages.

Abstract

A leader's speech in an international forum functions as a strategic rhetorical instrument to convey vision, foster solidarity, and assert diplomatic presence. This study analyzes the speech delivered by President Prabowo Subianto at the 2024 D-8 Summit, which centered on the call for unity among Muslim nations. Using a qualitative discourse analysis approach, the study applies Aristotelian rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos, within a lexicogrammatical framework. The dataset comprised 37 clauses, examined through mood types, speech functions, and polarity. The findings reveal that declarative mood was dominant (62%), establishing ethos through the delivery of credible statements and objective facts. A Pathos was conveyed via both declarative and imperative moods, reflecting emotional intensity through critical remarks, expressions of solidarity, and direct appeals. Logos was constructed through the inclusion of statistical data and historical references, supporting argumentative coherence. The consistent use of inclusive pronouns such as "we" reinforced collective identity, while the interplay of positive and negative polarity created rhetorical tension that enhanced emotional engagement. This study demonstrates how grammatical choices underpin rhetorical strategies, offering insights into political communication. The findings have implications for diplomatic speechwriting and rhetorical pedagogy, especially in contexts emphasizing cross-national solidarity and advocacy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the teaching and learning of speaking skills at the Ulil Albaab Islamic Boarding School in the 2023/2024 academic year, with an emphasis on the reasons for and practices of its implementation. This study uses a qualitative case study approach with data collection through observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis. The results show that speaking skills learning is dominated by a communicative approach that utilizes group discussion, presentation, and simulation strategies to encourage the use of language in real contexts. This approach is capable of creating an interactive learning atmosphere, despite facing challenges such as limited resources, varying levels of student confidence, and limited vocabulary mastery. Nevertheless, the integration of practice-based methods continues to play an important role in improving students' speaking skills. These findings have implications for the development of strategies for teaching speaking skills in Islamic boarding schools and similar educational institutions.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the public speaking skills of sixth-grade students at SDN 2 Daleman through the utilization of YouTube as an audiovisual-based learning medium. Public speaking is a crucial component of oral communication competence that needs to be developed from an early age, as it influences students’ confidence, critical thinking, and ability to express ideas in public. Initial observations indicated that most students faced difficulties in structuring their speeches systematically, using proper pronunciation and intonation, and showing appropriate expression and vocal control during presentations. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach conducted in two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects were 17 sixth-grade students, consisting of 8 boys and 9 girls. Data were collected through observation, documentation, interviews, and speech performance tests. The success indicators were determined by the increase in the number of students who met the Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) of 75 and improvements in specific aspects of public speaking, including expression, pronunciation, intonation, voice volume, and content structure. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ public speaking skills through the use of YouTube media. In the pre-cycle stage, only 7 out of 17 students (41%) achieved the MMC. After the first cycle of implementation, the number increased to 10 students (58%). By the second cycle, 15 students (88%) met or exceeded the target. In addition to the quantitative improvement, qualitative enhancements were observed in students’ delivery of speech elements.Learning improvement was also evident across multiple performance aspects, such as clarity of pronunciation, appropriate expression, dynamic intonation, mastery of content, and proper vocal projection. The effective use of YouTube, particularly through a modeling approach featuring high-achieving students as role models, proved to be a powerful motivator and conceptual clarifier. Moreover, it enabled students to engage in self-reflection by watching their own recorded speeches. Therefore, YouTube serves not only as a visual aid but also as a strategic tool to enhance oral communication skills in the context of 21st-century learning.

Abstract

Writing is vital in English education, particularly for vocational school students who need practical communication abilities. This study explores the teaching and learning of recount text writing under the Merdeka Curriculum at SMKN 1 Bantul, where recount texts are used to enhance students’ narrative and linguistic skills. The research aims to investigate instructional strategies, student engagement, and curriculum implementation challenges in recount writing lessons. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, teacher and student interviews, and document analysis of lesson plans and syllabi. The findings reveal that the teacher employed structured guidance, multimedia resources, and collaborative tasks to facilitate learning. Although students participated actively, many struggled with grammar and vocabulary, which affected their writing proficiency. Instructional media like PowerPoint and videos enhanced understanding, yet individualized feedback and differentiated instruction were limited. Assessment relied primarily on group tasks and observation, lacking personalized evaluation mechanisms. These results suggest that while current strategies align with Merdeka Curriculum principles, improvements are needed in language support, feedback systems, and assessment frameworks. The study implies that integrating interactive, student-centered approaches with targeted grammar instruction and more individualized assessment can enhance the effectiveness of writing instruction in vocational settings. Future research is recommended to compare practices across schools to identify broader trends and best practices in implementing writing pedagogy under the Merdeka Curriculum.
