Abstract

The current percentage of exclusive breastfeeding in West Sumatra is still below the national rate. Teenage mothers contribute to the low percentage of exclusive breastfeeding coverage. Young age is one of the factors that make it difficult to maintain breastfeeding behavior. The purpose of this study was to interpret the breastfeeding process among adolescent mothers. This study used a qualitative research design with an interpretative phenomenological approach to explore the breastfeeding process of adolescent mothers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using semi-structured questions and analyzed with thematic analisysby using a seven-step interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. The results identified five themes, namely: 1) perceived support from health workers, 2) reasons for teenage mothers to give other foods/drinks besides breast milk, 3) teenage mothers' perceptions of family support in breastfeeding, 4) emotional feelings of teenage mothers when breastfeeding, and 5) obstacles encountered by teenage mothers when breastfeeding.Suggestions The practice of breastfeeding by adolescent mothers provides an understanding that breastfeeding in adolescence has many challenges and barriers. Appropriate intervention strategies are needed to improve the understanding of adolescent mothers during the breastfeeding process so that breastfeeding success is achieved. Keywords: Adolescent Mothers, Breastfeeding, Exclusive Breastfeeding, Qualitative

Abstract

The use of smartphone apps or mobile applications has been widely adopted in medical and nursing practices across hospital, health center, and community settings. However, from an academic perspective, par-ticularly in terms of clinical skill proficiency, their use remains limited. This study aimed to systematically synthesize the available literature on smartphone applications and their specific features that can enhance knowledge (theory) and skills (laboratory practice) in undergraduate nursing education. The research findings could serve as the basis for de-veloping the KesPro-P app for laboratory practice in reproductive health nursing at Universitas Andalas. A computerized search was conducted using the ScienceDirect, PubMed, and EBSCOhost databases to identify relevant primary studies published between 2013 and 2023. A total of 10 eligible studies were identified from 431 potentially relevant articles. Six applications were found to be suitable for laboratory practice as they include standard nursing practice procedures. Seven applications were shown to assess changes in students' knowledge, skills, satisfaction, and confidence levels in clinical skills. In almost all of these aspects, smartphone applications scored higher compared to conventional learn-ing methods. By focusing on specific content and incorporating case stud-ies that closely resemble real-world scenarios, the use of smartphone applications proves to be highly effective in helping nursing students de-velop practical and theoretical competencies.

Abstract

The educational and socialization activities conducted on September 13, 2023, aimed to increase community knowledge about diarrhea and its home management. Diarrhea is a common health problem among children under 3 years old in developing countries, with an average of 3 episodes per year. Each episode of diarrhea can cause children to lose the necessary nutrients needed for growth, making it the leading cause of malnutrition in children and the second leading cause of death after pneumonia. One recommended dietary method for managing acute diarrhea is the BRAT Diet, which consists of Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. This diet helps reduce the workload on the digestive system and provides easily digestible foods. This educational activity targeted mothers with toddlers in the working area of Pauh Community Health Center. The program was implemented through counseling using PPT media and distributing leaflets to the participants. The activity was evaluated using pretests and posttests to measure the increase in community knowledge. The evaluation results showed an increase in community knowledge after the educational and socialization activities were conducted. This program highlights the importance of education and socialization in enhancing community knowledge about home management of diarrhea, which can ultimately help reduce the rates of malnutrition and child mortality.

Abstract

Anemia in adolescent girls is very dangerous for both the short and long term. If it happens in the long term, after becoming a mother it will be detrimental to the baby in the future. Babies of anemic mothers will tend to give birth to premature babies later in the productive period of the teenager. Babies born to anemic adolescents are very at risk for malnutrition, then stunting. The purpose of this health education is to prevent anemia in adolescent girls as the primary prevention of stunting in toddlers. The implementation of this activity is carried out through 4 stages: situation analysis, preparation of needs for implementation of activities and evaluation of activities. The health education activities on anemia prevention were attended by 50 young women with pale conjunctiva criteria and often felt dizzy. The measuring instrument used is a questionnaire. The results of this activity in general can increase the knowledge of young women about anemia by 76%. Good knowledge before the activity was only 20%, after the activity increased to 96%. While the knowledge that is lacking before the activity is 80%, after the activity it is only 4%. Health education given to young women can increase knowledge in young women. It is hoped that young women can always eat balanced meals and blood-boosting tablets and disseminate this information to other young women. To the local health center to provide education on a regular basis every time they carry out youth posyandu activities.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are dangerous diseases and result in death. The problems found by partners are the low coverage of NCD screening targets, access to health services and the absence of an integrated services centre for the elderly in the targetted area, which impacts NCD monitoring not being carried out. Community service activities aimed to prevent and suppress NCD cases, especially for older people in vulnerable groups. The solution was to detect NCD and provide education and counselling for older people with NCD problems. The community service partner was the Public Health Center. The method of implementing activities was health screening (measuring height and weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and uric acid), providing health education about hypertension and diabetes mellitus and health counselling for those indicated by NCDs in Pauh sub-District, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The screening results found 15 healthy older people, 13 people with hypertension, ten people with diabetes, nine people with rheumatism, and seven people with high cholesterol. The results of education and counselling found an increase in knowledge by 16.69 points—follow-up plans by partners to form elderly health centres.

Abstract

Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) is one of the main causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality, especially in premature infants. Interventional approaches such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) with the knee-chest position are considered effective for improving oxygen saturation. However, research on the effect of this position on infants with RDS in Indonesia is still limited. This study aims to describe oxygen saturation in infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) who use CPAP with the knee-chest position at Pariaman Regional Hospital. This study is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of all infants with RDS who used CPAP in the NICU room at Pariaman Hospital. A total of 15 infants were selected as samples using purposive sampling technique. Data collection was done with a questionnaire to record respondent characteristics (gender, gestational age, birth weight, type of delivery) and an observation sheet to measure oxygen saturation. Data analysis was performed using statistical software with descriptive tests, including frequency distributions and percentages. The majority of infants (66.7%) were male, with a gestational age of 34-37 weeks (80%), birth weight of 1500-2499 grams (66.7%), and delivered by caesarean section (66.7%). Oxygen saturation increased significantly after knee-chest positioning, from a mean of 94.40% before intervention on the first day to 98.73% after intervention on the third day. Statistical analysis showed that the change in oxygen saturation value was statistically significant (p<0.05). The knee-chest position effectively improves oxygen saturation in infants with RDS using CPAP. This intervention can be recommended as part of the neonatal nursing care protocol to improve oxygenation quality and support infant recovery.

Abstract

Adolescence is a transition period from childhood to adulthood, where in adolescent girls it is marked by menstruation, breast enlargement, hips, and so on. As a result of these changes, adolescent girls are at risk of experiencing nutritional deficiencies in their bodies which can lead to anemia. Anemia is a condition where there is a lack of hemoglobin levels in the body, the impact of which will be seen now and in the future. Dysmenorrhea is also the most common disorder experienced by women, especially adolescents, during the menstrual cycle. Dysmenorrhea can have an impact on daily activities, but many adolescent girls still do not know the factors related to the occurrence of primary dysmenorrhea, so health education is needed. The purpose of this activity was to provide health education about the risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea and anemia in adolescent girls and to conduct Hb level checks. This community service activity was carried out by providing education with slides and videos related to the risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea and anemia in 100 female students at SMP N 31 Padang. Adolescents will complete a knowledge and attitude questionnaire regarding anemia and primary dysmenorrhea before and after the intervention. The results of this activity showed an increase in knowledge and attitudes of adolescent girls regarding the risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea and anemia. The results of Hb examinations in adolescent girls found that 6% of adolescent girls had anemia. It is hoped that this health education can be carried out periodically so that young women can have the right knowledge and a positive attitude in dealing with problems such as dysmenorrhea or anemia.
