Abstract

Interpreters need to employ appropriate interpreting strategies to prevent information overload. The skills to employ such strategies may be associated to their experience. The current study investigates interpreting strategies employed by inexperienced novice interpreters (students) and more experienced interpreters (early professionals). The objective of this study is to make a comparison between interpreting strategies adopted by novice interpreters and those by early professional interpreters. The participants of the study were twenty students taking consecutive interpreting course and nine early professional interpreters. The data, gathered from video recordings of consecutive interpreting tasks, were analyzed to identify the strategies employed by the interpreters. The findings show that there are four strategies employed by the novice interpreters and six by the early professionals. The four strategies by the novice interpreters are skipping, word for word translation, guessing, and reproduction. The six strategies by the early professional interpreters are stalling, reproduction, word for word interpretation, inferencing, approximation, and taking advantage of cohesive markers. This shows that the early professional interpreters have wider repertoire of interpreting strategies compared to their novice counterparts. The limited number of strategies employed by the novice interpreters may be caused by their limited listening capacity, limited vocabulary, and their note taking skills. This implies that the consecutive interpreting course needs to be offered for students having passed courses on basic language skills. The second implication is that the consecutive interpreting materials need to include materials on active listening, chunking, and note taking.

Abstract

Intercultural communication is a vital component of modern education, necessitating efforts to enhance students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). Achieving this requires intentional strategies, such as exposing students to international learning environments. Immersing students in international learning environments—such as through international programs or short-term overseas courses—can foster ICC development.  Consequently, identifying shifts in ICC and effective strategies for its development is essential. This study was aimed at exploring the shift in ICC as experienced by international students as well as the intercultural communication problems encountered. This mixed method research was of explanatory-exploratory design with the respondents of Indonesian students taking a course in Singapore and foreign students pursuing a study in Indonesia. Data collection instruments used were questionnaires, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. Findings of the study reveal that students taking courses in other countries improved their ICC in all four categories in terms of knowledge, attitude, skills, and awareness. Problems encountered included linguistic, social, and cultural problems.

Abstract

This research investigated the implementation of project-based learning through animated videos in reading for specialized information and the perception of students on it. This research differed from others because students visualized the information from the reading text into animated videos. The implementation of project-based learning through animated video was measured by observation. Students’ perceptions about it were measured from the questionnaire. Thirty-two vocational students took part in this research. Based on the results of observations, three steps of project-based learning supported students’ success in achieving the learning outcomes. The result showed that students’ positive responses about the process of creating animated videos were: they worked with group (65,6%); they tried to design their animated videos (62,5%); they accessed and used features properly (59,4%); and they enjoyed to learn reading for specialized information (71,9%). Students’ positive responses about the benefits of creating animation videos were: they established good communication (62,5%); they got a better understanding (71,9%); they felt easier to visualize the lesson material (62,5%); they were more motivated to read (53,1%), and they felt more enthusiastic to learn new vocabularies (65,6%). On the other hand, students’ negative responses showed that they spent a lot of time in making animated videos (9,4%). Lecturers recommended using easy and basic applications in creating animated videos, such as Canva. Abstract

Financial statements are a fundamental element of accounting and serve as the basis for strategic decision-making, requiring mastery of accounting principles and quantitative skills. This descriptive qualitative study aims to describe the mathematical concepts and their applications in the preparation of financial statements by accounting students. Data were collected through interviews, student grades, and financial statement documents. The results indicate that the essential mathematical concepts include basic arithmetic, algebraic equations (e.g., ), ratios/percentages, basic statistics, and rounding. Although all students employed the same concepts, the depth and level of integration varied. Students categorized as “very good” demonstrated the ability to link calculations with transaction reasoning, analyze ratios across periods, apply statistical tools for diagnosis, and maintain accuracy control, resulting in financial reports that are meaningful and actionable. In contrast, students in the “fair” category tended to be procedural, focusing on numerical accuracy but lacking interpretation of the underlying meaning. It is therefore recommended that mathematics instructors develop learning models that integrate mathematical theory with direct accounting practice. Project-based or real case study approaches can help students better understand the relationship between mathematical computation and the actual outcomes of financial reporting.
