Abstract

Phytochemistry-based practicums have the potential to strengthen students' cognitive understanding, psychomotor skills, and affective attitudes. This study examines the effectiveness of phytochemistry testing practicums using mint leaf (Mentha sp.) ethanol extract on the learning outcomes, psychomotor skills, and attitudes of biology students. The research subjects consisted of 30 second-year students selected using purposive sampling, as they had already completed the basic pharmaceutical biology course. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was applied, with instruments including a learning outcome test, observation sheets, and a response questionnaire. The phytochemical screening results confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids, which provided clear and easily observable visual indicators. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores (p = 0.001). Observations revealed good performance in laboratory skills such as procedural accuracy, work safety, and teamwork, although color interpretation required further improvement. Questionnaire responses indicated that students perceived the practicum positively, particularly in terms of motivation, relevance to everyday life, and integration of theory with practice. These findings indicate that mint leaf-based phytochemistry practicums effectively support student learning, with an average score of 80.4 in the cognitive domain (Good–Very Good), 82 in the psychomotor domain (Good), and 85 in the affective domain (Very Good). The use of local plants as a practical medium also provides a contextual, low-cost, and innovative approach to biology education, with strategic potential to improve the quality of laboratory-based learning.Abstrak. Abstract

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and ginseng (Panax ginseng) are medicinal plants with high antioxidant potential due to their rich phytochemical constituents; however, the synergistic effect of their combined extraction has not been fully explored. This study aimed to identify the secondary metabolite profile and determine the total flavonoid content of the combined ethanolic extract of turmeric rhizome and ginseng root at a 1:1 ratio. Extraction was performed using the maceration method with 96% ethanol. Qualitative phytochemical screening was conducted to identify major secondary metabolites, while total flavonoid content was measured using the aluminium chloride (AlCl₃) colourimetric method by UV-Vis spectrophotometry at 415 nm with quercetin as the standard. All measurements were carried out in triplicate and analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD post hoc test. The phytochemical screening showed positive results for flavonoids, saponins, tannins/phenolics, and triterpenoids. The combined extract exhibited a total flavonoid content of 48.65 ± 1.2 mg QE/g extract, which was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the single turmeric extract (41.05 ± 0.9 mg QE/g) and the single ginseng extract (27.59 ± 0.7 mg QE/g). These findings indicate a synergistic interaction during co-maceration that enhanced flavonoid yield. In conclusion, the combined formulation improved the extraction efficiency of bioactive compounds and provides a scientific basis for the development of standardized phytopharmaceutical raw materials. Further in vivo studies are recommended to evaluate its therapeutic and neuroprotective potential.

Abstract

Background: Blood pressure regulation is influenced by autonomic nervous system balance, where increased sympathetic and reduced parasympathetic activity contribute to hypertension. Acupuncture may modulate autonomic function but combined somatic and auricular approaches remain underexplored. This study evaluated a multimodal acupuncture protocol combining Neiguan (PC6), auricular vagus, and Er Shen Men on autonomic function and blood pressure.   Methods: A randomized controlled trial with a pretest–posttest design was conducted in 60 adults aged 20–60 years, allocated into four groups: combination therapy, PC6 only, auricular vagus + Er Shen Men, and sham acupuncture. Interventions were applied twice weekly for four weeks. Outcomes included heart rate variability (SDNN, RMSSD, LF/HF ratio, and heart rate) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Data were analyzed using paired tests and ANOVA or Kruskal–Wallis tests with post hoc comparisons.   Results: The combination group showed significant improvements in SDNN, RMSSD, LF/HF ratio, and heart rate, along with reductions in systolic (−12.0 mmHg) and diastolic (−10.0 mmHg) blood pressure (p < 0.001). Single-intervention groups showed moderate changes, while the sham group showed minimal effects. Between-group differences were significant (p < 0.05), with greater improvements observed in the combination group.   Conclusion: Multimodal acupuncture is associated with improved autonomic function and reduced blood pressure, suggesting its potential as a non-pharmacological intervention for cardiovascular regulation.
