Abstract

This article examines the pattern of interaction between the Qur’an and societal traditions within the framework of the Living Qur’an. The study is based on the reality that the Qur’an is not merely a normative text but one that is enlivened through the traditions and social expressions of moslems. The purpose of this research is to conceptually explore three patterns of interaction between the Qur’an and tradition, taṣdīq (affirmation), tagyīr (modification), and takwīn (formation of new traditions) as well as to understand the relationship between text and context. The method employed is a literature review with a descriptive-qualitative and socio-historical approach. The findings reveal that taṣdīq reinforces traditions aligned with Islamic values, tagyīr  modifies traditions that remain mixed with non-religious elements, and takwīn creates new traditions inspired by Qur’anic values. The Living Qur’an illustrates that the Qur’an is note only understood textually but also actualized through social dan cultural practices. The dialectic between revelation and context generates a complementary moral authority that sustains universal values and religious praxis. This study is expected to provide theoretical contributions to Living Qur’an studies and open further avenues for exploration of this discourse.

Abstract

The Qur’an is a guide in all aspects of life. Not only for Muslims, but for all mankind, as reflected in the expression of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin. One of the aspects contained in the verses of the Qur’an as a guide is the theme of human rights. Da'wah to raise human awareness about the important meaning of respect for human rights is reflected in the pattern of human rights education in the Qur'an. The definition of the pattern of human rights education in the Qur’an is a number of Qur’anic verses that talk about human rights and how the Qur’an invites people to respect those human rights.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the concept of syūrā deliberation in the Qur'an as the foundation of social ethics and reconciliation in contemporary society, which faces a crisis of dialogue and religious polarization. The method used is the tafsīr maudhūʿī approach (thematic interpretation combined with contextual hermeneutic analysis). The focus of the study is directed to three main verses: QS Āli ʿImrān 3:159, QS Ash-Shūrā 42:38, and QS Al-Baqarah 2:233. In the analysis, the author integrates the views of the classical mufassir alṬabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Qurṭubī and the modern thinker M. Quraish Shihab, alṬabāṭabāʾī to interpret the deliberative value of the Qur'an in a broader socio-ethical context. The study's findings reveal that the value of syūrā encompasses three primary dimensions: recognition and acceptance of taʿāruf, diversity, tolerance of tasāmuh and mutual respect, and islāḥ (reconciliation and social restoration). These three dimensions form the conceptual framework of the "Qur'anic Ethics of Reconciliation," which has relevance to John Paul Lederach's transformative theory of reconciliation and Jürgen Habermas's concept of communicative action, but is enriched by a spiritual dimension derived from divine revelation. Conceptually, this study concludes that the Qur'an is not only a moral-theological guideline, but also an epistemological source for the development of modern Islamic social theories oriented towards peace, spirituality, and inclusivity.

Abstract

The growing social inequality in the modern era signifies that the global economic system is losing its moral compass. The interest based capitalist system places profit above justice. This study seeks to reinterpret the Quranic verses on riba in a more contextual and humanistic manner, not merely as a legal-formal prohibition, but as a moral call to restructure economic relations toward greater justice. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive method and a thematic (maudhu‘i) approach to verses such as QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 275–279, Ali Imran [3]: 130, and Ar-Rum [30]: 39 to trace the ethical meanings behind the sacred text. The findings reveal that the Qur’an’s critique of riba is, in essence, a critique of exploitative economic systems both classical and modern. Conversely, values such as zakat, infaq, and mudharabah offer a more just economic path that fosters solidarity and upholds humanity. Thus, this study affirms that the Quranic ethics on riba can serve as an alternative foundation for building an economically and morally dignified system one that embraces progress and innovation without compromising ethical integrity. What the modern world needs is not merely an interest-free system, but an economic civilization imbued with empathy and oriented toward collective well-being.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the Qur’anic conception of imagination by analyzing the terms khayala (خيل) and ṣawwara (صوّر). The research seeks to determine whether these expressions are related to Allah SWT, to human beings, or to the nature of reality as a whole. The research employs a qualitative approach using the methods of tafsir (Qur’anic interpretation) and philosophy. These approaches serve as the main analytical tools to uncover the essence of imagination within the Qur’an. The analysis is further supported by contemporary philosophical theories that help strengthen and contextualize the interpretation. Results. The study finds that the Qur’an presents imagination as a hierarchical concept encompassing divine, cosmic, and human dimensions. Allah SWT, as al-Muṣawwir (ٱلْمُصَوِّر), is depicted as engaging in an act of divine imagination that manifests all of creation, reflected in the term ṣawwara (صوّر). The Qur’an also portrays reality as multilayered and ever-evolving, represented by ṣuwar (صوَر) and yuṣawwiru (يصوّر), encompassing both physical-biological and social-psychological realms. Furthermore, through the use of yukhayyalu (يخيل), human imagination is shown to operate within the vast expanse of Divine imagination, suggesting that all human creativity exists within God’s greater imaginative reality. The Qur’an views imagination not as a mere mental faculty but as a fundamental ontological principle that structures existence. Divine, cosmic, and human imaginations are interrelated in a continuous process of creation and re-creation. Thus, imagination in the Qur’anic perspective reflects the dynamic interplay between the Divine act of creation and human participation within that imaginative reality.
