Abstract

This research aims to: (1) describe the personality of the character Kugy in the novel Perahu Kertas by Dewi Lestari, (2) describe the personality of the character Saya in the novel Si Parasit Lajang by Ayu Utami, (3) describe the intertextual relationship between the personality of the character Kugy in the novel Perahu Kertas by Dewi Lestari and I am in the novel Si Parasite Single by Ayu Utami. This type of research is qualitative research using descriptive analysis methods. The data in this research is in the form of sentences and dialogue contained in the novel. The steps taken are (1) data comparison, (2) categorization, (3) presenting data with tabulation and description, and (4) interpreting to draw conclusions, and (5) reporting research results. Based on data analysis and discussion of the personality of the character Kugy in the novel Perahu Kertas by Dewi Lestari, findings were obtained based on the nine personality types of Baron and Elizabeth's theory, that the figure of Kugy is a romantic personality. Furthermore, the personality of the female character Saya in the novel Si Perasit Lajang by Ayu Utami is that the character Saya has an observer personality. Viewed from various aspects, the novels Perahu Kertas and Si Parasit Lajang in intertextual studies are character transformations, themes of love and friendship, as well as the influence of popular culture.

Abstract

By using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach at Al Azhar 32 Islamic Elementary School in Padang, this study aims to improve students' reading and writing interest. Learning motivation is crucial to improving students' academic achievement, especially in basic literacy skills such as reading and writing. However, due to the lack of diverse and non-contextual teaching strategies, elementary school students often have low literacy motivation. The PBL paradigm, which focuses on solving real-world problems, is one of the creative, more dynamic, and challenging learning methodologies needed. The Classroom Action Research (CAR) method uses two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were fourth-grade students, and a learning motivation questionnaire was administered before and after the activity, along with observations of learning activities and interviews with teachers and students. Descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative analyses were conducted on the data. The research findings indicate that using the PBL paradigm significantly increased children's motivation to write and read. Students' enthusiasm increases, they participate more actively in class discussions, can express their thoughts more systematically, and become interested in literacy-related activities. The Problem-Based Learning approach has increased elementary school students' reading motivation. Through problem-based learning that can be applied to students' daily lives, this approach encourages emotional and cognitive engagement.

Abstract

Bullying di lingkungan sekolah dikenal sebagai perundungan yang memiliki dampak merugikan pada kesehatan mental, pencapaian akademis, serta hubungan sosial para siswa. Istilah circle bullying mengacu pada situasi di mana sekelompok pelajar secara bersama-sama menargetkan seorang korban, yang mengakibatkan tekanan sosial yang sangat besar, rasa ketidakamanan, dan perasaan terasing. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan metode studi literatur dengan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif untuk mengevaluasi langkah-langkah pencegahan dan intervensi melalui penerapan pendidikan inklusif serta kebijakan sekolah yang tegas. Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa program sosialisasi anti-bullying, pendidikan inklusif yang menghargai perbedaan, serta kebijakan sekolah yang tegas efektif dalam memutus siklus circle bullying dan menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang aman. Kerja sama antara guru, siswa, dan orang tua berperan penting dalam membangun suasana sekolah yang mendukung dan inklusif. Penerapan strategi yang komprehensif ini memungkinkan siswa untuk tumbuh dalam aspek akademik, sosial, dan emosional tanpa adanya ancaman perundungan, serta memfasilitasi kesejahteraan mental dan peningkatan prestasi melalui pembentukan karakter, empati, dan keterampilan sosial yang sangat esensial.

Abstract

Language variation in the political sphere gives rise to registers shaped by the speakers’ styles, which often neglect principles of politeness. This study aims to analyze the politeness strategies employed by Mahyeldi and Epyardi Asda in the 2024 West Sumatra Gubernatorial Public Debate based on Geoffrey Leech’s (1983) Politeness Principle and the concept of kato nan ampek (Navis, 1986). This research adopts a qualitative approach using pragmatic discourse analysis. The data consist of transcriptions of both candidates’ utterances, which were examined according to Leech’s six politeness maxims and the values of kato nan ampek. Data collection techniques included observation, transcription, note-taking, data classification, documentation, and data inventory. The data were analyzed through reduction, data presentation, contextual analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that out of 37 analyzed utterances, only 9 complied with Geoffrey Leech’s politeness principles, while 28 violated them. Compliance was predominantly demonstrated by Mahyeldi, particularly in the tact maxim, whereas Epyardi Asda showed no compliance and more frequently violated the agreement, tact, and modesty maxims. Based on the kato nan ampek framework, Mahyeldi tended to use polite forms in kato mandaki and kato malereang, while Epyardi Asda more frequently violated kato mandaki through derogatory insinuations. These differences have implications for the construction of public image and societal perception, indicating that linguistic politeness plays a significant role in political communication.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the difficulties faced by students in writing advertising texts at SMP Negeri 8 Padang. This is because teachers do not use varied learning models in the learning process so that students have low learning interest. This study aims to describe the influence of the jigsaw model and learning interest on advertising text writing skills. This type of research is quantitative research with an experimental method. This research was conducted in class VIII of SMP Negeri 8 Padang. The sample of this research was students of class VIII. G as the experimental class and students of class VIII. H as the control class. There are two research instruments, namely a performance test of advertising text writing skills and a questionnaire to measure students' learning interest. Research data collection techniques, namely questionnaires were given to students in the experimental class and the control class. Next, the teacher gave a pretest of advertising text writing skills to see students' initial abilities. The teacher then carried out learning using the jigsaw model in the experimental class and the conventional model in the control class. Next, the teacher gave a posttest of advertising text writing skills to measure students' final abilities. Based on the results of the study, several things can be concluded as follows. First, there is a difference in the results of the argumentative text writing skills test of students using the jigsaw model with the results of the advertising text writing skills test of students using the conventional model with a sig value of 0.000 < 0.05. Second, there is a difference between the results of the advertising text writing skills performance test of students with high learning interest using the jigsaw model with the results of the advertising text writing skills performance test of students with high learning interest using the conventional model with a sig value of 0.000 < 0.05. Third, there is a difference between the results of the advertising text writing skills performance test of students with low learning interest using the jigsaw model with the results of the advertising text writing skills performance test of students with low learning interest using the conventional model with a sig value of 0.003 < 0.05. Fourth, there is no interaction between the problem based learning model and students' learning motivation in influencing the argumentative text writing skills because Fcount (1.403) < Ftable (4.2).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the ability of 11th-grade students (Phase F) at SMA Negeri 7 Mandau-Duri to analyze intrinsic elements of short stories through the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and the conventional learning model, viewed from learning motivation and the interaction between learning models and learning motivation. This research employs a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method. The research subjects consist of 30 11th-grade students. Data on the ability to analyze intrinsic elements of short stories were collected through tests, while learning motivation data were obtained through questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate that the ability of students learning with the PBL model to analyze intrinsic elements of short stories is higher compared to those learning with the conventional model. Learning motivation serves as a supporting factor in enhancing short story analysis skills, although its influence is relatively smaller than that of the learning model. Grouping of high and low learning motivation was performed based on the average motivation score to maintain analysis validity. Additionally, there is a positive interaction between the PBL model and learning motivation in influencing the ability to analyze intrinsic elements of short stories. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the application of the Problem-Based Learning model, supported by students' learning motivation, effectively improves the ability to analyze intrinsic elements of short stories. The PBL model is recommended for implementation in high school literature instruction.
