Abstract

During the first two years of Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla Government (2014-2015) in Indonesia, precisely 18 death row inmates who were guilty of drugs had been executed. The government believed that death penalty is the effective solution to overcome the high rate of narcotics crime. It becomes an interesting case due to the pressure of hegemony of the European Union over the government of Indonesia. One of the major national media in Indonesia, namely Republika.co.id, supports the implementation of death penalty. This studied aims to reveal the counter-hegemonic representation of Republika.co.id in opposing the hegemony of the EU related to the issue of Human Rights, particularly death penalty. This study applied Critical Discourse Analysis by Norman Fairclough and critical theory of Hegemony by Antonio Gramsci. The result shown that Republika represents counter-hegemonic in its reporting since it rejects the EU’s attitude considered to impose its standard principles of human rights on Indonesia.

Abstract

West Kalimantan has a history of inter-ethnic conflicts, and the process of reconciliation has been continued until today in order to create a complete peace. This present study uses the qualitative method of explorative case study from the perspective of Arendt's Political Forgiveness Theory to analyze the process of individual forgiveness in the ongoing reconciliation process. The results indicate that the dialectics of forgiveness practices that occur individually cannot be achieved completely due to several factors, but the presence of the West Kalimantan Children's Forum, the Madurese Family Association, the Alliance for Peace and Transformation, and the Dayakology Institute stimulates the emergence of collective forgiveness for the past inter-ethnic conflicts in the younger generation in West Kalimantan. The findings suggest that sustainable justice is the main solution that will enable all ethnic groups to live in harmony.

Abstract

Many Indonesian Diaspora are studying as international students at various universities worldwide. Cross-cultural communication plays a vital role in actualizing Indonesian students, especially in interacting with local residents. This study aims to determine the pattern of cross-cultural interaction and understand the six cultural dimensions in the Asian continent through the perspective of the Indonesian Diaspora, namely Indonesian students abroad. This research examines the construction of meaning that occurs using research instruments in the form of in-depth interviews and documentation studies in the perspective of Hofstede's Cultural Dimension Theory. This research is based on the cross-cultural communication paradigm, namely dialectics as an integration between functionalist and critical paradigms with a descriptive qualitative research approach. The study results indicate a discrepancy between Hofstede's functional data and the social reality experienced by diaspora students. Several cultural dimensions, such as power distance, individualism vs collectivism, and indulgence vs restraint, experience reinterpretation in everyday social practices. Communities with low individualism scores tend to be closed to foreigners, while collectivist societies show openness and responsiveness to newcomers. These findings confirm that cultural dimensions are contextual and dynamic and are greatly influenced by the negotiation of meaning in intercultural social interactions. Thus, this study enriches the understanding of cultural flexibility and the importance of a micro approach in reading cross-cultural communication in international education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the beauty standards in the Indonesian version of 200 Pounds Beauty (2023) using a qualitative descriptive approach and discourse analysis method developed by Sara Mills, focusing on feminism. The main objective of this research is to explore how the representation of women in the film reflects social pressures and patriarchal ideologies related to beauty. Through discourse analysis of dialogues, scenes, and socio-cultural context, this study identifies how the character Juwita experiences body-shaming and discrimination based on her appearance before and after undergoing plastic surgery. The findings indicate that the film reinforces unrealistic beauty myths, where women who meet the ideal beauty standards receive special treatment, while those who do not conform to these standards face marginalization. This research highlights the negative impact of beauty standards shaped by the media, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about the diversity of physical appearances and boosting women's self-confidence. Thus, this study contributes to a broader understanding of the relationship between gender, beauty, and representation in the media.   Keywords: Body Shaming, Feminism, Film Studies,  Beauty Standards.

Abstract

The GenRe Ambassador Program in West Kalimantan strategically empowers teenagers, particularly by increasing their knowledge of reproductive health, building mutually supportive communities, and encouraging them to act as agents of change in their communities. This research aims to analyze the program's implementation using a participatory communication theory approach, involving two-way dialogue, active participation, heteroglossia, and dialogical interaction. This study was conducted using a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six informants, including the West Kalimantan GenRe Forum Chair, GenRe Ambassadors, and other active members. Direct observations were also made to understand the program's dynamics. The study is based on participatory communication theory developed by Bessette (2004), which emphasizes the importance of active community involvement in development through dialogical and inclusive communication. The results show that the program increased teenagers' awareness of life planning and reproductive health, strengthened two-way dialogue, and built supportive social networks. However, social stigma surrounding discussions of reproductive health and limited facilities remain as challenges that need to be overcome. The implications of this research support the achievement of the SDGs, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). With further support from the government and society, this program has great potential to evolve into a more effective and inclusive youth empowerment platform.

Abstract

Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY) has become a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, and this popularity is further enhanced by films as a promotional medium. The short film Merindu di Jogja, uploaded to the YouTube channel @PaniaradyaKaistimewaan on June 8, 2024, is one such example that centers its narrative on Yogyakarta. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to explore the representation of DIY in the film Merindu di Jogja using a qualitative method with text analysis. The author selected six scenes for examination through John Fiske’s semiotic analysis, which is divided into three levels: the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. The findings of this study show that Merindu di Jogja primarily introduces DIY. At the level of reality, DIY is visually represented through codes of appearance, behavior, and environment to illustrate the customs, culture, geography, history, and philosophical axis of Yogyakarta. The level of representation is conveyed through technical codes such as lighting, cinematography, music, and sound to strengthen the impressions or realities depicted in the film, helping viewers to grasp the meaning of each scene. Meanwhile, at the level of ideology, the actions and behavior of the main character, Regita, seek to portray DIY as a nationalist region that embodies Pancasila ideology in daily life. Furthermore, the semiotic elements representing DIY suggest that this film serves as a tool to promote DIY as an attractive, authentic tourist destination capable of offering memorable experiences.
