Abstract

In the current era of media saturation, the emphasis on teaching reading is on cultivating students' critical literacy abilities. This enables them to examine the specific social and political biases conveyed by an author and form a critical perspective on the topics addressed in a text. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a critical literacy model in enhancing students' critical literacy abilities during English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Reading classes. A quantitative analytic method was employed for experimental study. The study was conducted in the English Language Education Study Program at a private university situated in Yogyakarta. There were 20 students in the sampling. The individuals in question were students in their fifth semester who enroll in the Critical Reading Class during the Odd Semester of the Academic Year 2022/2023. The data were acquired through the methods of observation, questionnaire administration, interviews, and reading assessments. The study's findings showed that the model was effective, as evidenced by the results of the independent T test indicate a statistically significant difference, with a significance level (two-tailed) below 0.05. In addition, the scores of the pre-test and post-tests in the experimental class surpassed those in the control class. The experimental group demonstrated a substantial improvement in their post-test score, achieving a gain of 3.64 points. In summary, the implementation of the critical literacy framework yielded significant improvements in students' critical literacy skills across various dimensions, including precision, coherence, profundity, analysis, and the identification of latent implications.

Abstract

One of the reasons for the success of the teaching and learning process in the classroom is the teacher's belief system. Belief guides one’s thinking, action, and understanding of events. The level of beliefs in the teaching process needs to be probed before teachers critically manifest their teaching practices and facilitate outcome changes. In Indonesia, the independent curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), which was regulated in 2022, directs the teaching English since elementary school. The present study aims to assess the teachers' belief system in teaching English to elementary school students as the “Kurikulum Merdeka”implementation spirit. The study involved 32 English teachers. The questionnaire assessed the teachers' beliefs about teaching English to elementary school students in 3 areas: the nature of children's English development, methods and techniques, and self-efficacy. There was also 1 open-ended question addressed to teachers to investigate their level of beliefs in teaching English among elementary school students. Data analysis is described in the form of descriptive statistics, independent t-test analysis, and content analysis. The results of this study indicate that the international school environment has a better level of belief than the national-plus school. Meanwhile, there was no difference in the level of belief in teaching among teachers with different educational backgrounds when they were in college.

Abstract

This research was carried out to investigate a relationship between self-directedness, self-involvement, expressive language, self-assessment, language varieties, metacognitive skills, editing and problem solving, text processing, knowledge rehearsal, idea planning, goal oriented monitoring and evaluating, peer learning, feedback handling, interest enhancement, motivational self-talk, and emotional control and the main and forming factors of self-directedness, self-involvement, expressive language, self-assessment, language varieties, metacognitive skills, editing and problem solving, text processing, knowledge rehearsal, idea planning, goal oriented monitoring and evaluating, peer learning, feedback handling, interest enhancing, motivational self-talk, and emotional control of self directed learning. A convenience sample approach was used to recruit English majors from a range of State University of Yogyakarta. All participants were recruited intentionally, and that they were informed that they might leave the study at any moment either during collecting data. The participant criteria include second-year English major students from various State Universities of Yogyakarta. As the result of pearson correlation in this research, it was found that there was a substantial relationship between the variables examined in this research. Moreover, as the result of factor analysis in this research was found that from the 11 variables included in the research namely self involvement, expressive language, self assessment, language varieties, metacognitive skills, editing and problem solving, Cognition, Metacognition, Social Behavior, and Motivational Regulation, they can be grouped into two main factors. The implications of these findings lie in a deeper understanding of the underlying conceptual structure of self-directed learning in a university context. With the identification of the key factors emerging from these variables, a more focused approach can be developed to enhance students' self-directed learning. This can also aid in the development of more precise and measurable assessment instruments to gauge progress in crucial aspects of self-directed learning. Thus, the implications of these findings can enrich teaching and learning practices in higher education settings.
