Abstract

Dandruff is a scalp disorder caused by Malassezia furfur fungus, often treated with anti-dandruff shampoos. However, synthetic active ingredients in such shampoos may cause side effects like scalp irritation, dryness, or allergies. As an alternative, herbal formulations using fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.), known for their antifungal properties, can be developed. The objective of this study was to determine and analyze the best Fragrant pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) leaf extract shampoo formulation and its antifungal activity against Malassezia furfur. The type of research conducted was a true experimental study with a Post-Test Only Control Group Design. In this study, there were treatment groups given a shampoo preparation of fragrant pandanus leaf extract at concentrations of 30%, 50%, and 70%, a negative control group of a shampoo base, and a positive control group of a shampoo containing 1% selenium sulfide under the brand name Selsun. The analysis used was the One-Way ANOVA test. The shampoo preparation of fragrant pandanus leaf extract demonstrated antifungal activity against Malassezia furfur, with inhibition zones obtained at a 30% concentration (15.83 mm), 50% concentration (18.68 mm), 70% concentration (21.89 mm), positive control (21.36 mm), and negative control (0 mm). The 70% Fragrant pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) leaf extract shampoo preparation is the best formulation because it exhibits optimal physical characteristics and produces the greatest inhibition against Malassezia furfur.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Background: One of the fungi that often causes infectious diseases is Candida albicans with a worldwide prevalence of 66%. Candidiasis as a disease caused by Candida albicans infection can be found throughout the world and is able to attack all ages, both men and women. Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera plant extract with ketoconazole in inhibiting Candida sp. on Saboraud Dextrose Agar. Methods: The method of searching for article data sources is carried out through the Google Scholar and PubMed databases (2015-2020) to retrieve relevant articles published in English and Indonesian. Key terms and phrases related to the comparative effectiveness of Moringa oleifera, ketoconazole, Candida sp. growth, Saboraud Dextrose Agar used in the subject search. Results: Based on the results of a literature review from 23 journals consisting of comparative characteristics of the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera and ketoconazole plant extracts, 11 journals found that ketoconazole Moringa oleifera plant extract was more effective than ketoconazole, while 12 other journals said that ketoconazole was more effective. By doing a comparison between the two methods, it was found that ketoconazole was more effective to be used in inhibiting the growth of Candida sp. than Moringa oleifera plant extract. Conclusion: Based on 23 journals conducted by a literature review, it can be concluded that ketoconazole has better effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of Candida sp. than Moringa oleifera plant extract.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Malassezia furfur is a pathogenic organism that causes dandruff. One way to prevent dandruff is by washing the hair using shampoo that contains anti-dandruff active ingredients. Continuous use of synthetic shampoos can cause the hair to become dry, easily brittle, irritate the eyes and scalp, and damage the hair shaft. Herbal shampoos have become popular due to consumers’ belief that they contain natural ingredients that are safer and have minimal side effects. One natural ingredient that can be used is the peel of kepok banana (Musa paradisiaca L.). Objective: To determine the antifungal activity of a shampoo formulation containing kepok banana peel extract (Musa paradisiaca L.) against the growth of Malassezia furfur. Methods: The type of research conducted was a true experimental study with a post-test only control group design. In this study, there were treatment groups given shampoo containing kepok banana peel extract at concentrations of 1.56%, 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%, a negative control group using the shampoo base, and a positive control group using shampoo containing 1% selenium sulfide. The data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA. Results: All shampoo formulations showed suboptimal physical characteristics. Concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100% demonstrated antifungal activity against the growth of Malassezia furfur. Conclusion: There is antifungal activity from the shampoo formulation containing kepok banana peel extract (Musa paradisiaca L.) against the growth of Malassezia furfur.
