Abstract

Red dragon fruit is rich in nutrients and minerals as well as phytoalbumin and antioxidant compounds such as phenolic compounds and vitamin C. Corn contains vitamins A, B, and E as antioxidants, as well as Thiamin, which can reduce black spots on acne scars and dry out wounds. Peel-off masks are cosmetic preparations for facial care that can form a thin, transparent layer on the surface of the skin and can be peeled off after drying, so they are practical to use. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a film-forming polymer and can increase viscosity, which in turn plays a role in producing peel-off masks that have good physical quality. This study aims to formulate peel-off masks of red dragon fruit extract (Hylocereus lemairei Hook.) and corn starch with varying concentrations of PVA (F1:2.5%, F2:8.75%, F3:17.5%) in order to have a high-quality good physique. The evaluation of the physical quality of the red dragon fruit and corn starch peel-off masks was organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and drying time. The organoleptic preparations (F1-F3) were brownish-orange in color, with a distinctive rose odor, with increased viscosity from F1 to F3, and remained stable for up to 4 weeks of storage. The homogeneity of preparation (F1-F3) was homogeneous and lasted for 4 weeks of storage. The pH value of the preparation on day 1, F1 and F2, had a pH of 4, and F3 had a pH of 4.5. From the 1st to the 4th week, the pH of preparations F1-F3 was 4.5, according to the physiological pH of the skin, 4-8. The spreadability of F1-F3 preparations was in the 5.5-6.5 cm range, according to 5-7 cm provisions. The adhesive power of the F1-F3 preparations was in the range of 5.29-40.1 seconds, which is recommended for more than 1 second. The drying time of F1-F3 preparations was in the range of 20.58-30.45 minutes, according to the provisions of 15-30 minutes. The three red dragon fruit and corn starch peel-off mask formulas (F1, F2, and F3) meet the requirements for good physical quality according to the criteria set and recommended. Increasing the PVA concentration did not affect the pH value and spreadability of the three formulas but increased the adhesiveness value and drying time.

Abstract

One of the compounds that can be exploited from plants is antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that are important in overcoming free radicals in the body. Natural antioxidants are more desirable than synthetic ones because of their minimal side effects. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that has been used in traditional medicine in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the content of secondary metabolites contained in citrus parasite leaf extracts using non-polar and polar solvents and how their antioxidant activity is. with a ratio of material and solvent 1:10. The screening tested included alkaloids, triterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The method used to test the antioxidant activity of the orange parasite leaf extract is the DPPH method as measured by a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was carried out using One Way Anova and Post Hoc on the IC50 value of the extract with a 95% level of confidence. From the results of research conducted, the N-Hexane extract of citrus parasite leaves contained secondary metabolites of alkaloids, steroids and flavonoids, and the ethanol extract of orange parasite leaves contained secondary metabolites of alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The antioxidant activity of the n-Hexane and ethanol extracts were 92.731 ppm (strong) and 54.490 ppm (strong) respectively.

Abstract

Burn injuries involve tissue damage caused by heat, including exposure to hot steam, fire, radiation, electricity, hot liquids or fats, electrical currents, and chemical compounds. Dadap Serep leaves (Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk) Merr) are among the plants recorded in Usada Bali, known for treating various types of wounds. This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of ethanol extract cream from Dadap Serep leaves in reducing the diameter of second-degree burns in vivo using white rats as test subjects. Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into four treatment groups: K- (negative control), K+ (positive control), P1 (application of Dadap Serep leaf extract cream 20%), and P2 (application of Dadap Serep leaf extract cream 40%). The cream was topically applied twice daily for 14 days. The burn diameter results were analyzed using SPSS 25 software employing the Tukey Test. Post hoc Tukey testing revealed significant differences between the negative control and positive control groups, treatments 1 and 2, with p-values of 0.001, 0.043, and 0.012, respectively. No significant difference was observed between the positive control group and treatment groups 1 and 2, with p-values of 0.268 and 0.596, respectively. The ethanol extract cream from Dadap Serep leaves proved effective in reducing the diameter of second-degree burns on rat skin. The Dadap Serep leaf extract cream at a concentration of 20% was effective in reducing the diameter of second-degree burns on rat skin.

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Demam Berdarah Dengue merupakan penyakit menular akibat virus Dengue yang disebarkan oleh nyamuk Aedes aegypti dan Aedes abopticus. Demam Berdarah Dengue merupakan masalah yang tengah dihadapi masyarakat Indonesia yang berisiko kematian. Tujuan: Kegiatan Pengabdian ini dapat memberikan edukasi terkait penyakit dan pemanfaatan tanaman herbal sebagai minuman kesehatan sehingga dapat digunakan sebagai pengobatan alternatif. Promosi kesehatan mengenai Demam Berdarah Dengue dan tanaman obat dapat diberikan melalui media buku saku di wilayah Desa Sumerta Kelod sehingga dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan masyarakat. Metode: Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini dilaksanakan melaui penyuluhan serta pemberian pretest dan posttest terkait informasi penyakit dan cara penanggulangan melalui pemanfaatan tanaman herbal menjadi minuman kesehatan. Hasil: Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini diikuti oleh 30 orang warga Desa Sumerta Kelod, dimana peserta laki-laki sebanyak 8 orang dan peserta perempuan sebanyak 22 orang. Dari data tersebut didapatkan hasil bahwa sebanyak 24 peserta atau sebesar 80% menunjukkan hasil yang positif dilihat dari nilai post-test lebih besar. Kesimpulan: Promosi kesehatan mengenai penyakit Demam Berdarah Dengue dan pemanfaatan tanaman herbal sebagai minuman kesehatan melalui buku saku dapat menghasilkan peningkatan pengetahuan masyarakat dan diharapkan kegiatan seperti ini rutin dilakukan sehingga dapat mencegah terjadinya penyakit Demam Berdarah Dengue di wilayah Desa Sumerta Kelod Kota Denpasar.

Abstract

ISPA adalah penyakit infeksi akut yang menyerang salah satu bagian atau lebih dari saluran nafas. Infeksi pada saluran pernafasan merupakan penyakit yang umum terjadi di masyarakat, dan penyebarannya sangat mudah dan cepat. Secara umum penyebab dari infeksi saluran nafas adalah berbagai mikroorganisme, namun yang terbanyak akibat infeksi bakteri dan virus. Pengobatannya juga disesuaikan dengan penyebabnya. Penggunaan antibiotika diperlukan apabila penyebab penyakitnya sudah dipastikan bakteri. Kenyataannya dimasyarakat penggunaan antibiotika begitu mudah. Hal ini menimbulkan kekhawatiran terjadinya pengobatan yang tidak rasional dan kemungkinan terjadinya resistensi. Penelitian ini mengumpulkan data yang disajikan sedemikian rupa, untuk menggambarkan penggunaan antibiotika untuk pengobatan ISPA nonpneumonia di Puskesmas Kediri II. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode deskriptif observasional, yaitu penelitian berdasarkan data-data yang sudah ada tanpa melakukan perlakuan terhadap subyek uji. Data diperoleh dari hasil penghitungan resep yang diberikan kepada pasien yang didiagnosa ISPA nonpneumonia, seperti pilek (common cold), sinusitis, faringitis, tonsilitis, laringitis dan ISPA lainnya yang tidak spesifik, yang berobat di Puskesmas Kediri II pada tahun 2013 sampai dengan tahun 2015. Dari penelitian yang dilakukan diperoleh hasil penggunaan antibiotika tahun 2013 sebesar 86,16%, tahun 2014 sebesar 88,61% dan tahun 2015 sebesar 82,73%, dengan Amoxycillin menduduki peringkat tertinggi penggunaan antibiotika yaitu sebesar 92,76%, Cefadroxil 4,19%, Ciprofloxacin 1,34% dan Cotrimoxazole 1,71%.

Abstract

Gangguan reproduksi kini banyak dialami terutama pada pria akibat berbagai faktor, jahe merah sering digunakan untuk mengatasi gangguan seksual pada pria. Jahe merah dilaporkan memiliki efek sebagai afrodisiaka. Afrodisiaka adalah semacam zat perangsang yang konon dapat meningkatkan gairah seks. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efek pemberian ekstrak etanol jahe merah (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) sebagai afrodisiaka pada tikus (Rattus novergicus L.) putih jantan. Jahe merah diekstraksi dengan cara maserasi dengan etanol 80%. Dibuat menjadi ekstrak kental melalui proses evaporasi. Ekstrak kental jahe merah diencerkan dengan konsentrasi 25% dan 50%. Tikus dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok perlakuan yaitu kelompok kontrol yang diberikan aquadest, kelompok perlakuan diberikan ekstrak jahe merah dengan konsentrasi 25% dan 50%. Ekstrak jahe merah diberikan secara oral selama 7 hari. Parameter yang diamati adalah frekuensi pendekatan (introduction), menunggangi (climbing), dan kawin (coitus). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ekstrak jahe merah dapat meningkatkan libido pada tikus jantan. Dengan perbedaan bermakna antara kelompok kontrol dengan kelompok konsentrasi 25% dan 50%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak jahe merah efektif meningkatkan libido tikus jantan selama 7 hari penelitian pada konsentrasi 25%.

Abstract

White turmeric is one of the medicinal plants known for its antioxidant properties. This research aims to investigate the antioxidant strength of white turmeric extract (Curcuma zedoaria) by assessing the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in an oxidative stress model of white rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed to cigarette smoke. The study was conducted as an experimental research with a randomized post-test only control group design. Thirty rats were used, divided randomly into six groups: normal control, negative control, positive control, and three treatment groups with extract doses of 100 mg/kgBW, 200 mg/kgBW, and 300 mg/kgBW. The extract was administered daily for 14 days. SOD levels were analyzed using SPSS 26 with the Tukey Post Hoc test. The results showed that the SOD levels in the serum of animals exposed to oxidative stress were 2.71 ng/ml, 2.86 ng/ml, and 3.32 ng/ml at doses of 100 mg/kgBW, 200 mg/kgBW, and 300 mg/kgBW, respectively. The dose of 300 mg/kgBW exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and showed potential to reduce oxidative stress caused by cigarette smoke exposure. This research adds valuable insight into the antioxidant activity of white turmeric ethanol extract and informs the public about its benefits as a natural antioxidant source, particularly in enhancing superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. It also highlights the potential for white turmeric to be standardized as an herbal product, paving the way for preclinical and clinical trials towards its development as a phytopharmaceutical product.

Abstract

The red dragon fruit peel (Hylocereus lemairei (Hook.) Britton & Rose) is rich in antioxidants like vitamins C, E, and A, along with alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which protect against free radical damage. Despite its benefits, the peel is underused. This study compares the formulation and physical quality of a body scrub made from red dragon fruit peel extract to commercial products. Stearic acid was added to enhance consistency and stability, and commercial products served as benchmarks due to their compliance with physical, microbiological, and chemical standards. Formulations with stearic acid at 5% (F1), 10% (F2), and 15% (F3) were tested for physical quality—organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, and spreadability—over 63 days as an intermediate time points, at controlled room temperature. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 20 with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). Results showed that all formulations maintained a consistent pH of 6 and homogeneity. The adhesion properties were consistent across all formulas, showing no significant difference (p = 0.815; p > 0.05). In contrast, the spreadability exhibited a statistically significant difference between formulas (p = 0.001; p < 0.05). Stability tests revealed no significant differences in physical quality over time, indicating that the formulations remained stable. The body scrub formulated with red dragon fruit peel extract demonstrated stability and quality comparable to commercially available product. This ensures that the active ingredients in the body scrub remain potent, enabling them to effectively deliver their antioxidant properties to the skin.

Abstract

The increase in infection cases every year, coupled with the rise in resistance cases, increases the urgency of exploring antimicrobial agents. Gracilaria sp. is a red seaweed that is widely known as one of the potential producers of active metabolites, sulfated polysaccharides. Carrageenan is one form of sulfated polysaccharide that has antimicrobial activity. This study was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial activity of carrageenan derived from Gracilaria sp. against several pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Salmonella typhi. Carrageenan was extracted from Gracilaria sp. samples obtained from the South Denpasar area (Bali) using KOH. An antibacterial activity assay of carrageenan was carried out using an agar well diffusion method with nutrient agar media. Tests were conducted at concentrations of 1 and 5 mg/mL (E. coli and S. epidermidis), 20, 30, 40 mg/mL (S. aureus, S. pyrogenes, E. faecalis, and S. typhi), 50, 75, and 100 mg/mL (P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae). Incubation was carried out for 24 hours at ± 37 °C. Data were analyzed statistically by one-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that carrageenan extracted from Gracilaria sp. exhibited significant antibacterial activity against several pathogenic bacteria, especially gram-negative bacteria. The antibacterial activity produced in this study was proportional to the increase in concentration, where the inhibitory activity produced increased as the concentration of carrageenan increased. It can be concluded that carrageenan has the potential to be an antibacterial.

Abstract

Abstract: White swallow nest (SWP) contains Epidermal Growth Factor, which can increase immunity, and glutathione, which functions as an antioxidant. SWP has a high potential to become an antioxidant-rich immunomodulatory drink. Combining maltodextrin and povidone in a granule formula can protect the active substance from heat and maintain the flavor components. However, the wrong concentration can reduce the quality of the resulting granules. This study aims to obtain a combination of maltodextrin and povidone concentrations in SWP granule formulations that produce granules with the best quality and physical stability. The wet granulation method prepared the ten SWP formulas with combined concentrations of maltodextrin-povidone (code: F1 to F10). Evaluation of the physical quality of the granules (organoleptic, pH, soluble time, moisture content, compressibility index, and flow properties) was evaluated on the first, seventh, fourteenth, and twenty-first days. Linear regression is used to create an equation model of the effect of formulation on granule quality parameters. Formula F6 has the lowest compressibility index and the highest flow rate. There was no significant difference for all physical quality parameters of all formulas during storage (p>0.05). The effect of varying concentrations of maltodextrin is inversely proportional to the effect of varying concentrations of povidone on the physical quality of SWP granules. From the research results, it can be concluded that the combination of maltodextrin (5%) and povidone (1%) in F6 produces granules with the best physical quality. All formulas are stable during storage.
