Abstract

This community service program aimed to develop ethical language values among students through storytelling and folklore-based learning. The activity was implemented at Ban Phadung Mart School, Southern Thailand, involving 20 students over three sessions. The program applied interactive storytelling as a medium to integrate linguistic, cultural, and moral learning. The community service was designed as a participatory educational intervention that emphasized the use of folklore to internalize ethical concepts such as honesty, respect, responsibility, and empathy. Data were collected through observation, reflection journals, and interviews with students and teachers. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ understanding of moral values and their ability to use English to express those values. The storytelling sessions not only improved language skills but also cultivated ethical awareness, social responsibility, and appreciation of local culture. The project highlights the importance of folklore as a pedagogical tool in developing ethical and linguistic competence in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of mother-tongue-based communication and health literacy in preventing stunting among early childhood children of inmates at Class II B Correctional Facility Sibuhuan. The research employed a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test model. A total of 40 inmates participated as respondents and received health education interventions delivered in their native language. Data were collected through health literacy questionnaires, knowledge tests, in-depth interviews, and participatory observation. The results revealed a significant increase in health literacy scores (from 52.3 to 78.6) and knowledge regarding stunting prevention (from 34.3% to 79.5%) after the intervention. Regression analysis showed that health literacy had a significant influence on knowledge improvement (R² = 0.642; p < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that communication using the mother tongue effectively enhances inmates’ understanding and participation in health education programs. The study recommends implementing a mother-tongue-based health education model as an effective strategy for stunting prevention, particularly in vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading skills of fourth-grade students at Public Elementary School 101103 Tolang Jae through the application of the deep learning instructional model. In this context, deep learning is not related to artificial intelligence algorithms but is employed as a pedagogical approach that emphasizes deep comprehension, reflection, and the application of concepts in real-life situations. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design adapted from Kemmis and McTaggart’s model, which consists of four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The study involved 28 students with varying literacy levels. Data were collected through reading literacy tests administered at each learning cycle and analyzed using quantitative descriptive methods. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ literacy performance from cycle I to cycle II, indicated by an increase in the proportion of students scoring above 80, from 17.8% to 35.7%. The use of critical discussions, concept mapping, and meaning exploration effectively enhanced students’ understanding of reading materials and fostered critical thinking toward texts. Therefore, the deep learning-based instructional approach proved effective in improving reading literacy skills among elementary students, particularly in rural schools with limited learning resources.

Abstract

This study is prompted by the inadequate reading interest and comprehension of grade X students at SMA Negeri 1 Batang Toru regarding descriptive texts in English. The primary issues found encompass insufficient student engagement in reading, challenges in comprehending language and text content, and a restricted application of appropriate instructional tactics by the educator. The objective of this research is to evaluate the efficacy of the SQ4R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review, Reflect) in enhancing students' reading comprehension of descriptive texts. The study utilizes a quantitative methodology featuring a pre-test and post-test framework. The population comprises all Grade X students at SMA Negeri 1 Batang Toru for the 2024/2025 academic year, with the total number are 251 students. The researcher employed purposive sampling to pick grade X6 as the sample, which initially comprised 35 students; however, only 19 participated in the study. The primary data comprises reading comprehension test scores obtained prior to and subsequent to the application of the SQ4R approach. The data collection equipment comprised a reading test and questionnaires. The data analysis methods employed included descriptive statistical analysis and t-tests to assess the significance of differences between pre-test and post-test outcomes. The students' reading proficiency was commendable, and the study indicated an enhancement in the average reading comprehension score from 72.37 in the pre-test to 87.63 in the post-test following the implementation of the SQ4R approach, resulting in an elevation of students' reading ability to an excellent level. In conclusion, the SQ4R method demonstrated efficacy in improving students' reading comprehension of descriptive texts and is advocated as an alternate instructional strategy for reading in senior high schools.

Abstract

This quantitative study sought to evaluate the English competence of grade XI software engineering students at SMK N 1 Angkola Timur and to compare their school-assessed grades with an internationally recognized norm. The research was motivated by the rising need for English proficiency in the global workforce and the possible subjectivity of internal school assessments. The main objectives were to assess the students' proficiency levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), analyze their distribution across these levels, and investigate the correlation between their report card grades and their British Council EnglishScore (BCES) results. The research comprised 16 students who participated in the BCES Core Skills assessment, evaluating grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening abilities. The analysis employed descriptive statistics. The results indicated a substantial disparity: All students achieved scores at the foundational Pre-A1 (37.5%) and A1 (62.5%) levels, resulting in a mean BCES score of 122.06. Conversely, their average report card grade was 86.56, with some children attaining grades as high as 90 when assessed at the lowest Pre-A1 level. Significantly, no student attained the requisite minimum score to access the writing and speaking test modules, highlighting a profound inadequacy in fundamental skills. The report suggests that the school's internal grades are an unreliable measure of actual English competence and advocates for an immediate curriculum reform.
