Abstract

This article presents the discovery of a buried fault beneath the soil layers in the Mt Malabar area, which complements the information on suspected faults on the previous geological maps. Using an Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) method, this study aims to delineate the layer discontinuity as a fault and describe the subsurface geology. This study employed a 1400 m long ERT line as the main line to identify buried fault traces, while each ERT line has an 800 m long installation across the main ERT line to obtain the direction of the minor fault. The investigation found a minor fault in the rock layer at a high resistivity layer, approximately 160 m below the surface. The identified rock units are believed to include sandy clay in the upper layer, followed by tuff, sandstone, and basalt lava in the lower layer because its resistivity value is above 250 Ohm.m. The 3D ERT model interpreted a minor buried fault as a weak zone beneath the soil and obtained the fault strike at approximately N 310°E and dipping 66°. Furthermore, these results are strengthened by the geological map, which confirms that ERT L-1 and ERT L-3 profiles coincide with a suspected fault in the Qmt rock unit area.

Abstract

This study addresses the limitations of traditional single-modality imaging techniques, such as optical microscopy, in effectively analyzing adipose tissue cells. A novel multimodal approach is introduced to overcome these challenges, combining MRI, CT, and microscopy to provide a more comprehensive and precise dataset. The system automates image processing, utilizing advanced segmentation methods to detect adipose cells more accurately while calculating cell dimensions and total image area. The results indicate that the maximum observed cell diameter reaches 10,466.64 µm, with a minimum diameter of 0.40 µm and an average diameter of 2,398.31 µm across the sample images. All measurements achieved 0% mean square error (MSE), highlighting the precision of the method. Comparative analysis reveals significant improvements in accuracy for both cell detection and quantification, outperforming conventional methods. Graphical representations further validate the reliability of this multimodal approach, demonstrating its capacity to capture intricate details of cellular structures. This innovative method holds considerable promise for enhancing medical diagnostics, particularly in metabolic disorders like obesity and diabetes, where adipose tissue plays a pivotal role. Integrating multiple imaging modalities offers a powerful tool for more informed clinical decisions, potentially leading to improved patient outcomes.

Abstract

The human ability to carry out daily activities is influenced by the balance of body posture in various positions, especially in a standing position. One of the factors of body balance is a biomechanical factor which is influenced by the morphology of the human body. Somatotype is a method of classifying the morphology of the human body, while the balance of human body posture can be measured based on the center of pressure (COP), which is the center of pressure generated when humans stand up. In this study, a system was designed to classify somatotypes using the Heath-Carter formula and assessment of body posture balance. Somatotype grouping is done with inputs in the form of body height measured with an ultrasonic sensor, body mass measured using a set of load cells to determine body mass index (BMI), and 8 anthropometric parameters. While the measurement of body balance is carried out by measuring the COP values using 8 load cell sensors. Eight anthropometric parameters were used, namely skin folds in the triceps, subscapular, supraspinal, and medial calf areas, the width of the femur and humerus bones, and the triceps and calf circumference. Statistical parameter values in the form of mean, range, and approximate entropy (ApEn) are then calculated from the obtained COP values, i.e., for the medial-lateral (ML) and anterior-posterior (AP) directions, so that the center point of the COP, the displacement distance of each axis (ML and AP directions), and their stability can be determined. The measurement results are grouped and combined to display the type of somatotype associated with the COP value to obtain a relationship between the type of somatotype and a person's standing posture. Measurements were carried out on 14 male subjects with an age range of 15-23 years. The measurement results show an average error range of 0.37-2.58% for ultrasonic sensors, 0.64-4.67% for load cells, 0.1-0.6% for ApEn values at COP in the medial-direction direction (ML COP), and 0% for ApEn in COP in the anterior-posterior direction (AP COP). The average difference range for ML COP is 0.03-0.84 cm, while the average for AP COP is 0.14-0.58 cm. These differences indicate a shift in the center of pressure on the subject's body when measurements are taken compared to the original state. The ectomorphic somatotype group had the greatest instability compared to 2 other somatotype groups, namely endomorphic and mesomorphic. In each somatotype group, the value of the AP COP range which is greater than in the ML COP indicates a greater tendency of body sway in the anterior-posterior direction. Abstract

Pressure injury or pressure ulcers could occur due to continuous pressure on the bony prominence of the skin and tissue. Geriatric patients, especially those with limited mobility and several comorbidities, are more susceptible to pressure injury. Stage classification of pressure injury is currently carried out qualitatively and requires clear communication with the patient. This is often not possible in elderly patients due to lack perception of pain causing late detection of pressure injury until they have reached a severe level and can endanger the patient's life. This study proposes a non-contact device in the form of a camera integrated with a convolutional neural network (CNN) model with MobileNet architecture to classify the level of pressure injury. Testing showed a classification accuracy of 83.3% with an average classification duration of 2.24 s. This aiding device is considered to have great potential to improve faster and more accurate pressure injury assessment in clinical settings.

Abstract

Abstract

Blood glucose measurement is critical to diabetes management and prevents chronic complications such as neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy. However, current methods are invasive, uncomfortable, and costly. Although several non-invasive approaches have been explored, no commercially available device offers a simple, affordable, and user-friendly solution for non-invasive blood glucose estimation, particularly one suitable for self-measurement outside clinical settings. This underscores the need for practical and inclusive alternatives. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a blood glucose estimation device using infrared LEDs to measure light transmittance through the fingertip. The research was conducted in two stages: initial testing using glucose solutions with varying concentrations (0.02, 0.06, 0.10, and 0.20 g/ml) and added red dye (0.05, 0.10, and 0.15 ml) to validate the sensor's response, followed by direct validation on human fingers against commercial blood glucose test strip readings. The results showed a strong positive correlation between sensor output and glucose levels, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.995. Using a regression-based calibration model, the system achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.63 mg/dL, and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.72 mg/dL. Cross-validation, such as Bland-Altman analysis and Clarke Error Grid, was conducted to verify model robustness. These preliminary results suggest that the developed system holds strong potential as a simple, affordable, and non-invasive tool for blood glucose self-monitoring, especially in resource-limited settings. However, further validation on larger, more diverse populations is necessary.

Abstract

The continuous increase in daily waste accumulation has become a major issue in many areas, primarily due to the mixing of various waste types and the lack of effective household waste management. This complicates waste processing and contributes to environmental degradation. This study aims to design and implement a practical tool for detecting organic and inorganic waste types, specifically for use by household waste collection personnel. The developed system utilizes three sensors, capacitive, inductive, and light-dependent resistors (LDR), to acquire characteristic data from different types of waste. The device is designed in the shape of a pistol to enhance mobility and ease of use by waste collection officers. For the waste-type classification system, several machine learning methods were employed, namely Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN). Based on the experimental results, AdaBoost was selected as the primary model for the waste classification system because of its superior performance in terms of cross-validation accuracy and the balance of evaluation metrics, such as precision, recall, and F1-score. Consequently, AdaBoost predictions were adopted to establish a rule-based classification logic by extracting threshold values from the most influential sensor features. This study utilized AdaBoost analysis as the foundation for rule formulation, ensuring that classification decisions were based on reliable and tested data patterns. Based on testing with several samples, the device can classify organic and inorganic waste types with an accuracy rate of 91.67%. Additionally, the tool can estimate the composition of mixed waste with an error rate of 5.06%. The presence of this device has been proven to accelerate and simplify the waste-sorting process, thereby increasing the efficiency of household waste management.
