Abstract

Body image concerns and social anxiety represent significant mental health challenges among adolescent populations worldwide, with emerging evidence suggesting that these phenomena may be particularly pronounced in specific cultural contexts. Understanding the relationship between body perception and social anxiety in culturally distinct populations is crucial for developing culturally sensitive interventions. This study aims to examine the relationship between body image and social anxiety among late adolescent girls of Toraja ethnicity. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed. The participants consisted of 122 female adolescents aged 18–22 years, selected using accidental sampling. The instruments used were the Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS) and the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A). Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation. The results showed a significant negative correlation between body image and social anxiety, with a correlation coefficient of -0.617 and a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.05). This indicates that the more positive the body image, the lower the level of social anxiety experienced by adolescents. Body image contributed 38.06% to the variance in social anxiety. These findings suggest that perceptions of physical appearance play an important role in influencing social anxiety among late adolescent girls. The results further imply that psychological interventions should emphasize self-acceptance and the development of a positive body image to help reduce social anxiety, especially among young females from specific cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

Marital satisfaction is a condition desired by every married couple. This becomes more challenging when faced with the reality of a long-distance marriage. The study aimed to examine the role of self-compassion and spousal social support in predicting marital satisfaction. Participants in this study were 100 GPIB pastors in 19 provinces who have been in long-distance marriage for 1-25 years. Data collection used The Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), The Receipt of Spousal Support Scale (RSSS) and ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale (EMSS), which were distributed by sending questionnaires via Google form. Data analysis was conducted quantitatively using multiple linear regression techniques. The findings indicate that self-compassion and spousal social support simultaneously predict marital satisfaction. Partially, spousal social support has a greater predictive power on pastors’ marital satisfaction than self-compassion. The implications of this study for pastor couples in long distance marriage are expected to emphasize the important of partners in providing social support to achieve marital satisfaction.

Abstract

This study is quantitative correlational research which aims to determine the relationship between patience and academic stress. In this study, researchers used a purposive sampling technique with a total of 103 participant’s final year psychology students from the 2020 class of Psychology at Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, who were working on their TA/thesis. The research instrument uses a patience scale and an academic stress scale. This research uses Spearman product moment correlation data analysis method. The results showed a correlation of r = -0,212 and a significance value of 0,016 (p <0,05). These results show that there is a negative relationship between patience and academic stress in final year students who are working on their thesis, which means that the higher the patience, the lower the academic stress. On the other hand, the lower the patience, the higher the academic stress. The results of this research can provide knowledge and coping for final year students who are working on their thesis so that they can increase their patience so that they can minimize academic stress when working on their thesis. This study associates the variable of patience with the variable of academic stress because the results of previous studies have not been conclusive, namely showing pro-contra results. In addition, the concept of patience is considered a positive character and is an important part of well-being which is one part of the study of positive psychology.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance fine motor skills in grade B students at Hati Elok Kindergarten. The hypothesis proposed in this study is that there will be an improvement in the fine motor skills of grade B students at Hati Elok Kindergarten after they have been given training in weaving activities using natural materials. After participating in the weaving training, fine motor skills will be greater than before participating in the weaving activities. The research method employs quantitative research with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The population of this study consists of students in class B at Hati Elok Kindergarten. The sampling technique used is saturated sampling, where all members of the population are included as samples. Data analysis in this study utilized the Wilcoxon Test. The results of the study indicate that weaving activities using natural materials are effective in improving fine motor skills in grade B students at Hati Elok Kindergarten, with a significance value (asymp. Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.0025. Since the value of 0.0025 is less than 0.005, the hypothesis in this study is accepted. The conclusion of this research is that weaving activities using natural materials are effective in enhancing the fine motor skills of grade B students at Hati Elok Kindergarten.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the significance of the relationship between physical appearance comparison and body dissatisfaction in female users of TikTok and/or Instagram. Participants were 203 female TikTok and/or Instagram users using purposive sampling techniques. The data collection method used is the Physical Appearance Comparison Scale-Revised (PACS-R) from Schaefer and Thompson (2014) which has been tested for construct validity in Indonesia by Qidwati (2019) and the Body Dissatisfaction Scale (BDS) from Tariq and Ijaz (2015 ) which has been tested for construct validity in Indonesia by Arshuha (2019). The data analysis technique used is the Pearson Product Moment correlation technique. From the results of data analysis, a correlation coefficient (rxy) of 0.548 was obtained with a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.01), which means there is a significant positive relationship between physical appearance comparison and body dissatisfaction in female TikTok and/or Instagram users. This means that a high physical appearance comparison will be followed by high body dissatisfaction, whereas if the physical appearance comparison is low it will be followed by low body dissatisfaction. The implication of this research is that women who use TikTok and/or Instagram need to reduce the behavior of comparing their own appearance with the appearance of others (physical appearance comparison) in order to avoid and not experience body dissatisfaction which can make women feel dissatisfied with their appearance and body shape.
