The story explores themes of personal growth and resilience through one character's struggle. It fits character development in overcoming challenges and emphasizing the importance of inner strength and self-discovery. Through qualitative method and explorative approach, this paper exemplifies negative freedom with the sense of urgencies in positive freedom. In analysis, the protagonist's journey from vulnerability to strength illustrates the human capacity to endure and transform in the face of life's challenges, highlighting resilience and growth in the face of adversity. In conclusion, it reminds people that even in the darkest of times, they still have the strength to breathe, endure, and ultimately thrive towards following positive freedom.

Abstract

This paper exposes collateral damage as representation of moral disengagement in the three superhero films of Black Adam, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Man of Steel. Iconography in superhero film represents ambivalent moral justifications. The superheroes must do everything to ‘save’ the world though it is done by embracing evil, destroying surroundings, or using cunning strategies. Any collateral damage in moral disengagement is considered necessary in order to destroy the source of the problem. The superheroes must do everything to save the day though he/she has to kill, to abuse his/her power, and even be ignorant only to focus on bigger things by sacrificing petty things. As the analysis, the moral disengagement is shown through recurring iconography of superheroes who kill other people and destroy the surrounding. The three superhero films indicate that the actions of the superheroes are only focusing on their own moral values. Collateral damage is considered not only as side effect of superheroes’ action, but also as reflection of their moral disengagement. In conclusion, the values that superheroes hold is universal, but actually, those destroy particular matters. Their moral doings are not totally true, but those are justified as one.

Abstract

This paper explores the crucial aspects of subtextual analysis in contemporary literary criticism. Modern literary criticism tends to play on the definitional aspects of literary works, but subtextual analysis goes beyond by regarding implied meanings. The idea is that meanings are waiting to be revealed by the audience. Through explorative approach and qualitative method, the analysis of this article revolves on the strategies, the critical roles, and the instance of subtextual analysis in literary analysis. The strategies of subtextual analysis involve engaging the audience to foster a personal connection with literary works, synthesizing and correlating meanings within literary works, encompassing empathetic engagement with the narrative, and developing diverse perspectives from the audience's vantage point. The critical roles of subtextual analysis consist of facilitating deeper implications through insinuated meanings, enhancing meanings in intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions of literary works, unveiling repressions presented within the text, facilitating exploration of anticipated interpretations and underlying meanings, adopting interdisciplinary approach, engaging with societal dimensions of literary works, perceiving literary works beyond any definition, and propelling co-texts, hypertexts, hypo-texts, and intertexts. In conclusion, subtextual analysis underlines possibilities in literary analysis by comparing various implied meanings related to humans’ identities in particular.

Abstract

This article investigates matters of Americanization in the adaptation of Power Rangers superhero serials to be imbued with American values from its original Japanese version entitled Super Sentai. Even though transcultural serials are considered successful in the United States and worldwide, they are deemed culturally problematic. Through a qualitative method and an explorative approach, the analysis explores that Power Rangers’ adaptation is shadowed by gender, racial, and second character issues. For instance, the gender aspect is related to gender swap, pink rangers, and the wearing of skirts by female rangers. Racial issues cover matters of the idealized melting pot in the U.S. Second character issues include matters of child employment, demonized monsters, and the usage of armed weapons. In conclusion, while Power Rangers is commercially successful, its adaptation process selectively modifies cultural elements, presenting an idealized rather than an authentic reality.

Abstract

This research investigates the link between exposure to social media content and the interpersonal communication skills of adolescents, focusing on students at SMK Unitomo Surabaya. Employing a quantitative correlational method, data were gathered via questionnaires administered to 139 purposively selected students. The instrument underwent validity and reliability testing, confirming that all items met the necessary standards. Findings from a simple linear regression analysis demonstrated a significant and positive association between social media exposure and interpersonal communication (r = 0.672, p < 0.01). The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.452) indicates that 45.2% of the variation in interpersonal communication skills can be attributed to social media exposure. These results imply that when adolescents engage with social media in a mindful and active manner—particularly on platforms like Instagram—it can positively influence their interpersonal communication development.   Keywords: Social Media Exposure, Interpersonal Communication, Adolescents, Instagram

Abstract

This article explores the role of imaginary friends in children’s emotional development in IF movie using qualitative approach grounded in psychoanalytic theory. The movie centers around Bea, a young girl who remembers her forgotten imaginary friends and embarks on a mission to find them a new home. Psychoanalytic theory of Freud and Winnicott suggests that imaginary friends act as transitional objects, helping children externalize and manage internal conflicts such as fear, anxiety, and unresolved emotions. Imaginary friends serve as mirrors for children’s evolving emotional needs, allowing them to project their inner struggles and engage in emotional regulation through play and imagination. Through an analysis centered around imaginary friends, this article explores how these friends help children navigate and process complex emotions. Bea’s forgotten imaginary friends represent parts of her emotional world that need resolution, acting as guides to help her confront and manage her deeper feelings. These friends provide a safe space for Bea to explore difficult emotions and internal conflicts, ultimately aiding in her emotional growth. In conclusion, this article illustrates how imaginary friends serve as crucial tools for children to express, manage, and navigate their internal worlds, helping them to work through unresolved emotions and fears.
