Abstract

In the modern era, the preservation of local cultural values faces significant challenges, particularly among Generation Alpha. The lack of engaging and communicative educational media for children aged 7 to 12 contributes to the decline in cultural awareness. This study aims to design and develop an interactive pop-up book as a cultural learning medium introducing Bugis ethnic traditions through engaging three-dimensional visuals. The development process employed a qualitative approach with the Four-D model (Define, Design, Develop). The results indicate that the pop-up book effectively serves as an innovative learning tool that enhances children’s interest in local culture and supports the transmission of cultural values. This book is expected to serve as a model for local wisdom-based educational media in Indonesia's cultural education curricula.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of e-commerce has fundamentally reshaped consumer–product interactions, shifting reliance toward digitally mediated visual representations. This study investigates the impact of visual elements on consumer product selection decisions on the Shopee platform. Employing a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 210 active users in Indonesia and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings reveal that image quality and color exert significant positive effects on purchase decision-making, whereas typography and layout do not demonstrate significant individual influences. Nonetheless, all visual elements collectively exhibit a significant effect, explaining 62% of the variance in consumer decisions. These results indicate that consumers prioritize visually salient and emotionally engaging cues over supporting visual attributes when evaluating products in online environments. From a theoretical perspective, this study extends the applicability of the Stimulus–Organism–Response (S-O-R) framework and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by demonstrating how visual stimuli shape cognitive evaluations and behavioral outcomes in digital commerce contexts. Practically, the study underscores the strategic importance of optimizing product visuals—particularly image quality and color—to enhance consumer engagement and drive purchase decisions.   Keywords: Visual Communication Design; E-Commerce; Consumer Decision-Making; Visual Perception; Online Shopping Behavior

Abstract

Lipa’ sabbe (Bugis silk sarong) is a textile that has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Indonesia since 2016. The balo lobang motif visually has a very close connection with the sulapa’ eppa (four sides) philosophy, which represents cosmological balance in the Bugis worldview. This research aims to uncover the symbolic meaning of sulapa’ eppa in the balo lobang motif on Bugis lipa’ sabbe. This type of research uses an interpretative qualitative research method, which seeks to find meaning in a phenomenon to investigate issues related to specific individuals, thereby gaining direct insight into their activities. The results of this study found interpretations related to the perspectives of representamen, object, and interpretation. This research outlines that the semiotic approach is crucial for understanding cultural artifacts as tools for generating meaning. According to the findings of this research, symbolic meanings must be revived in cultural practices. In this process, the symbolic values contained in the motifs tend to be simplified or even lose their relevance in social practice.   Keywords: Semiotics, Meaning, Lipa’ Sabbe, Balo Lobang, Sulapa’ Eppa
