Abstract

The increasing workload and productivity demands in the industrial sector have significantly impacted the physical and mental health of workers, particularly field workers who face considerable challenges daily. These field workers, who frequently encounter various physical and mental challenges, are at a higher risk of experiencing health issues, including job-related stress. This study aims to explore the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and work fatigue with the level of job stress among field workers at PT X. The research design employed is an analytical observational study with a Cross-Sectional approach. A total of 151 field workers at PT X were selected as the sample using a total sampling technique. The research utilized the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) questionnaire to assess work fatigue, the workplace stress place questionnaire to measure job stress levels, and height and weight data to calculate the respondents' Body Mass Index (BMI). Data analysis was conducted using Spearman's rank correlation test. The results indicate a moderately strong positive correlation between BMI and job stress, with a Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.487 (p < 0.001). Furthermore, a strong positive correlation was also found between work fatigue and job stress, with a correlation coefficient of 0.529 (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that increases in BMI and work fatigue are associated with higher levels of job stress.

Abstract

The Pharmaceutical Industry has a high risk of fire initiated by flammable chemicals, electrical energy and heat energy for production purposes. Fire Prevention Management must be carried out to manage the energy that causes fires. Fire prevention efforts, such as increased knowledge, availability of fire prevention infrastructure, and simulation activities, need to be conducted to increase the alertness of workers. Workers have an essential role in dealing with fires. Workers in engineering departments with activities that carry many risks of burning must be given knowledge in dealing with fires. They need to understand and analyse hazardous conditions in the workplace to apply fire extinguisher measures in the workplace. This study provides an intervention in the Fire Control Pocket Book (BUSA KEKAR) and its effect on fire control knowledge among technical employees at PT Konimex. A quasi-experimental method with a research design in the form of a posttest-only control design was used in this study. The experimental group was given intervention in the form of a Fire Control Pocket Book (BUSA KEKAR), while the control group was not assigned any intervention. The Experimental Group consisted of 35 people. Analysis of the Mann-Whitney test was carried out on the post-test results of the experimental group and the control group. There was an effect of giving the Fire Control Pocket Book (BUSA KEKAR) intervention on fire knowledge between the experimental group and the control group (p = 0.000).

Abstract

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs in the informal sector of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) remain limited. Informal workers in MSME bakeries are exposed to various physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards, which contribute to health complaints. These complaints often manifest as pain and discomfort in the back, hands, and feet—common indicators of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). If left unaddressed, MSDs can adversely impact workers’ health, increase absenteeism, and ultimately reduce MSME productivity. This community service program involved several stages: an assessment of OHS conditions among service partners, the implementation of intervention activities, ongoing monitoring, and evaluation of outcomes. The initial assessment identified musculoskeletal complaints among partner workers. Interventions included work posture assessments, evaluation of MSD symptoms, body anthropometry measurements, the design and provision of ergonomic chairs, and the development of workplace stretching routines. Monitoring was conducted by observing changes in work posture following the ergonomic chair intervention, as well as tracking MSD complaints after the introduction of stretching exercises. Evaluation results showed a reduction in work posture risk, from level 4 to level 2, after the ergonomic chair intervention. Moreover, muscle stretching exercises helped reduce the intensity of MSD-related pain among informal workers. In conclusion, this community service initiative through the development of ergonomic seating and implementation of stretching exercises has contributed to a reduction in MSD complaints among informal bakery workers in Tohudan, Colomadu. These improvements are expected to enhance the overall productivity of the MSME sector.

Abstract

Background: The work environment greatly affects the health condition of the workers so that there are no work-related accidents or occupational diseases. Noisy physical environmental factors above the threshold value have a risk of causing occupational diseases such as psychological work stress and hypertension. This study aims to analyze the effect of noise exposure on occupational stress and hypertension among workers. Subjects and Method: This study is a systematic review and meta analysis with the following PICO. P: working society, I: exposure noise ≥85 dBA, C: not exposed to noise ≥85 dBA, O: Stress and Hypertension. This study used of articles published between 2009 and 2022 were comprehensively searched for using electronic databases like PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The keywords to search for articles were “noise exposure” OR “occupational noise” AND “occupational stress” OR “work stress” AND “hypertension”. The adjusted odds ratio was used to evaluate the effect size (aOR). To evaluate the bias risk, the Critical Appraisal Skill Program (CASP) was used. Articles were analyzed using the Review Manager 5.3 application. Results: This study includes 14 papers, using cross-sectional and case-control study designs, from Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Jordan, and South Korea. Based on 5 studies cross-sectional on the effects of exposure to noise in the event of work stress, work stress increases 4.88 times compared to workers who are not exposed to noise (aOR=4.88; 95% CI= 1.77 to 13.47; p= 0.002). 9 subgroup studies with cross-sectional and case-control study designs on the effect of noise exposure showed an increase of 2.47 times the incidence of hypertension compared to workers who were not exposed to noise at work (aOR= 2.47; 95% CI= 1.75 to 3.48; p<0.001). Conclusion: Exposure to noise increases the risk of work-related stress and hypertension. Suggestions that can be made are to carry out engineering, periodic measurements, work time management, workforce education and use of PPE.

Abstract

Chronic exposure to cotton dust in the textile manufacturing industry has been a possible risk factor for pulmonary obstruction. Not many studies, however, have investigated its impact in combination with personal variables like age, gender, and length of service, particularly in developing countries. The present study investigated the impact of cotton dust exposure, age, gender, and length of service on the incidence of pulmonary obstruction among textile workers in Surakarta, Indonesia. Observational analytic study using cross-sectional design was done on 88 eligible workers. Quantitation of exposure to cotton dust was done with a High-Volume Air Sampler and lung function ascertained using spirometry. Data analysis was done through simple and multiple binary logistic regression at a significance level of 0.05. The incidence of pulmonary obstruction was 56.8%. Being exposed to cotton dust levels exceeding the threshold limit value (TLV) of 0.2 mg/m³ significantly increased the risk of pulmonary obstruction (OR: 4.18; 95% CI: 1.51–11.63; p=0.006). Employment duration was also significantly associated with pulmonary obstruction (OR: 1.21 per year; 95% CI: 1.03–1.44; p=0.023), while age and gender were not significant predictors. The accuracy of the final model was 75%, which is considered to be acceptable in occupational health studies in predictive modeling. The current research reaffirms that long-term exposure to cotton dust and extended working hours are critical risk factors for pulmonary obstruction in textile industry workers. Therefore, it is recommended to long-working-hour employees to have proper control of the exposure and continuous lung function monitoring.
