Now, batik workers working position mostly use “dingklik” so work position becomes bent, and it is risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Abstract

Background: Direct Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) strategy has been regarded as successfulto control Tuberculosis. However decreasing rates of TB prevalence and mortality were not fastenough to attain half of the prevalence and mortality in 2015 as targeted by Millenium DevelopmentGoals (MDGs). There is a need for continuity and expansion of DOTS strategy implementation. Thisstudi aimed to evaluate the attainment of TB control program with DOTS strategy and determinefactors affecting it.Methods: This was a quantitative and qualitative evaluation study using a post-hoc cross-sectionaldesign. The study was conducted in Sukoharjo and Boyolali districts, and Surakarta municipality, CentralJava, carried out from October 2009 to February 2010. The target population included TB implementingworkers, policymakers, TB health program planners, TB patients and their family, and other stakeholders. Results: There is disparity in the target attainment of TB control program at district/ municipalities aswell as subdistrict levels. Some districts and subditricts have not reached the expected quantitativeand qualitatives levels of outcome. Case finding and detection rate were subtstandard 70%, atmunicipality/ district level. This problem was due to level of compliance among doctors, spesialists, and private hospitals was still low to implement standard procedures of diagnosis, treatment, reportingand recording of TB patients. The drop-out rate and ineffective drug administration supervision affectedthe cure rate. Financial support for the TB control program from the local government and locallegislatives was lacking. Conclusion: TB control program with DOTS has been implemented but with varying level ofachievement. System strengthening and participation of all health providers are encuraged byestablishing external network. Keywords: evaluation, tuberculosis control, DOTS strategy

Abstract

Background: Morbidity and mortality due to acute respiratory infection (ARI) in children under five years old is high. Contributing factors include air pollution caused by domestic use of mosquito coils and spray. Hazardous chemicals in both mosquito coils and spray can iritate respiratory tracts, thereby putting children at higher risk for infection. This research aims to examine whether domestic use of mosquito coils and spray is associated with the prevalence of ARI among children under five years at Puskesmas Sibela Surakarta. Methods: This was an observational study using case control design conducted from March to April 2012 at Puskesmas Sibela Surakarta. Forty subjects were sampled using fixed-disease sampling method. Parents of case group (20 children with ARI) and control group (20 children without ARI) were interviewed and asked to fill out specific questionnaires. Data were analyzed using χ2 test and odds ratio. Results: Twelve children with ARI were exposed to mosquito coils and spray at home. History of mosquito coils and spray exposure at home were only found in two children without ARI. Statistical analyses showed a significant relationship between ARI in children and domestic use of mosquito coils and spray (OR = 13,5, 95% CI 2,4 to 74,9, p = 0,001). Conclusions: There was a significant relationship between domestic use of mosquito coils and spray with prevalence of ARI among children under five years at Puskesmas Sibela Surakarta. Compared to children who lived in a house not using mosquito coils and spray, those who were exposed to mosquito coils and spray at home had 13.5 times higher the risk to get ARI. Keywords: ARI, Children Under Five Years, Mosquito Coils and Spray.

Abstract

Background : Air humidity affects the age, the distance fly, and the speed multiplied, also the habits of biting and rest of mosquitoes. City parks give a habitat for breeding mosquitoes. The density of top vegetations and bottom vegetations of city parks affect the air humidity. In the good air humidity mosquitoes are more quickly multiplied and the period of life of mosquitoes are longer so that the population mosquitoes will increase. This research aimed to know whether there are population differences of mosquitoes between citiy parks with the good air humidity and not so good in the city of Surakarta. Methods : This research was observasional analytic. The objects of this research are 2  citiy parks in Surakarta who has been measured its air humidity, then were clasified in city parks with the good air humidity for the growth of mosquitoes and not so good for the growth of mosquitoes. The data were conducted at regular intervals every 9 days following the life cycle of mosquitos and lasted for 53 days in accordance with the term of the living of mosquitos. Independent t Test (sig. = 0.05) was used to find out the role of the variables. Results : The result of the Independent t Test was obtained significant (p) 0.034 (p < 0.05). It shows that the differences of significant average between air humidity good and not so good with the population of mosquitoes In the City Parks of Surakarta. Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a health problem in Indonesia, which has been the potential to be the cause of epidemic, because of its widespread distribution from year to year. One of the factors considered to influence the incidence of DHF is the condition of water container, which includes the type of landfill, landfill color, and size of the landfill. However, these factors are limited studied in the laboratory and still little information gained from field research until now. This study aimed to investigate the association between type of water container and the occurance of DHF in the city of Surakarta. Methods: This study was an observational study particularly a matched case-control design. It was conducted from June to October 2012 at five health centers located in the city of Surakarta. The total sample size was 68 subjects (34 subjects as cases with DHF, and 34 other subjects as free-DHF controls). Data were analyzed using McNemar test. Results: The study found a stastical significant relationship between the type of water container and DHF occurance with odds ratio of 7.5 (p= 0.001; CI 95% 1.715-32.79). Conclusion: There is a stastical significant association between the occurance of DHF and type of water container in the city of Surakarta. The use of non-cheramik type water container, increases a persons risk for DHF at 7.5 times higher. Keywords: DHF, type of water container, color of water container
