Abstract

Abstract

Karanganyar Village, Batang District, has great potential for utilizing traditional medicinal plants to improve community health. Cases of diabetes mellitus in the area have increased due to unhealthy lifestyles and excessive sugar consumption. Local plants such as bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum), bitter leaf (Andrographis paniculata), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), and turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza) possess proven antihyperglycemic effects and are safe for use as adjuvant therapy. This community service program aimed to educate and empower the community to independently utilize local resources. The activity, held at the Karanganyar Village Hall with 30 PKK women participants, employed pre-tests, material presentations, interactive discussions, and post-tests to assess knowledge improvement. Results showed that participants initially lacked understanding of adjuvant concepts and medicinal plant utilization. However, after the sessions, all participants demonstrated significantly better comprehension and confidence in applying traditional medicine to support diabetes management. The high engagement level indicated that the materials were relevant and beneficial to the community’s needs. This program effectively enhanced public knowledge of traditional medicine as an adjuvant for diabetes mellitus and has the potential for independent application in local health practices.

Abstract

Medicine are something that is very easy to get. However, the lack of knowledge about drug management from getting it to disposing of it can cause various problems. In an effort to improve health, it is necessary to provide optimal education to the public to increase the level of public awareness of health. The purpose of carrying out this service is to increase the awareness of the people of Bandengan village in DAGUSIBU medicine. The implementation method used is the lecture method or direct presentation and discussion to the public. The results show that the role of education can increase the knowledge of the community related to drug management, starting from how to get it to properly dispose of the drug. This is shown by the increase in pre-test and post-test scores with significant results.

Abstract

Inflammation is a body defense mechanism by the presence of cell damage against harmful stimuli caused by pathogens, toxic compounds, or irradiation. Drugs that have been used have adverse side effects for the body. The use of natural ingredients is an alternative, one of which is natural ingredients from the sea, namely Rhabdastrella sp. The sponge genus Rhabdastrella has various bioactivities such as anticancer, antimalarial, antibacterial, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardioprotective, insecticidal, antidiabetic, cytotoxic. Other species of the Genus Rhabdastrella, such as the sponge Rhabdastrella sp. has never been studied. The purpose of this study was to determine the antiinflamation activity of the ethanol extract of the sponge Rhabdastrella sp. The research method was carried out using the method of denaturation of chicken egg protein. The sponge Rhabdastrella sp. was extracted with 96% ethanol. The anti-inflammatory test with protein denaturation used spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 660 nm. concentrations of sample are 50 ppm, 100 ppm, 150 ppm, 200 ppm, and 250 ppm. The positive control comparison used sodium diclofenac with concentrations are 3.12 ppm; 6.25 ppm; 12.5 ppm; 25 ppm; and 50 ppm. The results showed that the ability to inhibit protein denaturation of 20% ethanol extract of Rhabdastrella sp. was obtained at 70.29 ppm, while the IC50 of the ethanol extract obtained was 280.33 ppm. These results were significantly different from the positive control of sodium diclofenac, which was 36.51 ppm. The anti-inflammatory activity of the sample sponge extract was very small because the content of compounds that have anti-inflammatory abilities, including flavonoids, was only about 2%. Based on this, the sponge extract of Rhabdastrella sp. is not potential as an anti-inflammatory.
