The results demonstrate that EFL students' self-efficacy level during teaching practicum is in the moderately high to very high category. It is indicated by the results of the questionnaire, which shows that the strength dimension has the highest score of 3.60 (very high), the generality dimension with a score of 3.40 (slightly high), and the magnitude dimension with a score of 3.0 (slightly high). Additionally, the elements influencing students' self-efficacy include mastery experience, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and psychological arousal.

Abstract

First semester students face a transition period as an adaptation process to prepare themselves for changes in the academic environment. Students who have difficulty adjusting to changes and new academic demands tend to feel stressed and face various conflicts in meeting the demands of the academic environment. Self-efficacy is students' belief in their own abilities, playing an important role in determining their success in facing academic demands. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of self-efficacy in basic writing of first year students in English Language Education Study Program. The researchers gained data from 26 students in Basic writing Class by using quantitative approach. From the data analysis the researchers found that the self-efficacy of first-year students was considered good even though it was still low, with an average self-efficacy of 3.9. This shows that self-efficacy needs to be considered as a key factor that influences the process and results of student learning. Therefore, it is important for educators to explain to students about the role of self-efficacy in supporting their success in learning, as well as provide support to increase students' self-confidence in their ability to learn and write.

Abstract

This study aims at scrutinizing the register pattern used by the sellers in promoting their goods in the popular Facebook trading group used by people in Ngabang, West Borneo, “Ngabang Jual-Beli”. The group is an ambient representation of language variation used in West Borneo. The register analysis covers the field, tenor, and mode of the discourse. The data analysis encompasses domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis modified by Santosa (2017). The domain covers the kinds of goods being sold. The taxonomy analysis is the three meta functions in the SFL framework. The combined domain and taxonomy in the componential analysis figure out the register pattern in the group. The findings reveal that in the field of discourse, the posted clauses are dominated by the use of the material process, relational identification, and relational attributive process. The material process reflects the experiential meaning of the current activities. Meanwhile, the information of the goods realizes relational identification and relational attributive processes. With respect to the tenor of discourse, there is a tendency for the sellers to use declarative clauses which reflect equal status between the sellers and the customers by considering the minimal social distance. Furthermore, in the mode of discourse, the unmarked topical theme reflects as the majority of the ellipsis subject referring to the sellers. The study implies that the language used in digital trading should consider the participants, the relationship among the participants, and the media used to persuade their target market. Keywords: Facebook trading group, online shop, register, systemic functional linguistics

Abstract

Exploring the level of the students’ self-efficacy toward their speaking ability is the grand design of this study. The participants of this study were 28 non-native students from the suburban area in West Borneo. Those students belong to the third semester of the speaking class. In collecting the data, they were given a questionnaire. An in-depth interview was also conducted with 3 prominent students to validate and triangulate the represented data in the questionnaire result. Adopting Bandura’s theory, the results of this study show that the students manifested slightly high self-efficacy in the magnitude dimension, slightly high self-efficacy in the generality dimension, and very high self-efficacy in the strength dimension. In addition, the in-depth interview affirms that the students’ level in magnitude is influenced by their educational background; the students’ level in generality is affected by their interests in their particular field, and the student's level of strength is determined by their strong belief.

Abstract

This study investigates the pronunciation challenges of Dayak Kanayant EFL pre-service teachers and strategies to mitigate such challenges. The present study employed a mixed methods approach. There were 10 pre-service teachers who participated in the study. For the quantitative data, the participants were asked to do voice recordings of 30 English words to identify patterns of pronunciation errors. To generate the qualitative data, in-depth interviews were conducted with participants to explore the strategies they used to overcome pronunciation challenges. Three primary categories of pronunciation problems were identified: complicated errors (6.7%), vowel errors (41%), and consonant faults (52.3%). Vowel errors frequently entailed replacing English vowels with Dayak Kanayant phonetic system-related sounds, while consonant errors included replacing /f/ and /v/ with /p/ and /b/ since these sounds are not present in their mother tongue. Consonant clusters and silent letters were among the complex errors. Participants used a variety of strategies to overcome these obstacles, such as technology-based resources (including YouTube and Google Translate), peer feedback, mimicking and repeating native speakers, and heightened awareness of how their original accent affects how they pronounce English. The study emphasizes the significance of comprehending the phonetic distinctions between the Dayak Kanayant language and English, and it recommends that pre-service teachers employ focused techniques to enhance their pronunciation.
