Abstract

Background: The teaching of language-related skills in universities and colleges needs to equip students with relevant skills suitable for work after graduation. One way of building students’ skills to meet the related industry’s demands is by adopting project based learning (PBL) in teaching. There have been several studies on the topic of PBL in translation courses, but none of them have provided a step-by-step classroom procedure. Methodology: The study was a case study to describe the model of project-based learning adopted in the English Department of one Polytechnic in Java island, Indonesia. The object of the study was the Localization and Transcreation class. The data sources included the teacher and 24 sixth-semester students taking the class. Questionnaires and interview were used for the data collection. The questionnaires were used to know the students’ perceived competences. The interview was used to get more information on how the PBL was conducted and students’ further opinion about it. Before a class was started, the students were asked to fill in the provided questionnaire on the status of their competence at the time. Then, the PBL was employed to teach the class. After the PBL was done, the students were asked to fill in the same questionnaire to report their competences at the time. The researcher analyzed the results. Finally, an interview was conducted with the teacher and three students who answered the questionnaire most comprehensively. Findings: The findings of this study show that PBL could be employed to teach translation in vocational higher education and the students saw PBL positively. Based on the students’ opinion, this research found that PBL in the translation class helped students develop their translation skills, teamwork skills, workplace skills, communication skills, and self-confidence. Conclusion: In conclusion, PBL employed in the translation class has shown its effectiveness in improving students’ translation and other competences. Originality: The Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia has promoted project-based learning. To date, no clear model has been developed for the teaching of translation in Indonesian universities. This article describes project-based learning developed and practiced in a Polytechnic and how students react and the improvement of their competences or skills.

Abstract

This PKM/Service program aims to improve the packaging and promotion of "Debog Banana Duwet Polinema Crispy Chips" in Duwet Village, Tumpang District, Malang Regency. The residents of Duwet Village face challenges in effectively packaging and promoting their product, which currently lacks adequate branding and labels. To address these issues, this community service initiative aims to provide guidance and support in improving the packaging of the chips, as well as enhancing their promotional activities. Simple packaging equipment will also be provided to streamline the packaging process. The program's implementation will begin with partner coordination and conclude with a comprehensive evaluation. The outcomes of the training and mentoring activities reveal several key findings: Partners have limited knowledge about product quality improvement, affecting the product's market recognition. Current packaging methods used by partners are basic, consisting of plastic clips without product labels, limiting their market reach to the local community. "Kribog's DuPo Crispy" products, created by partners, lack attractive branding and labels. To ensure the sustainability of "Kribog's DuPo Crispy" products produced by our partners, the following recommendations are made: Conduct training sessions focused on enhancing product quality, fostering creativity, and innovation among "Kribog's DuPo Crispy" producers. Provide support in marketing strategies to address partners' limited knowledge in this area. Offer assistance in obtaining government-issued certifications, such as P-IRT licenses and food safety certifications, to ensure product quality and safety standards for "Kribog's DuPo Crispy."

Abstract

Interpreters need to employ appropriate interpreting strategies to prevent information overload. The skills to employ such strategies may be associated to their experience. The current study investigates interpreting strategies employed by inexperienced novice interpreters (students) and more experienced interpreters (early professionals). The objective of this study is to make a comparison between interpreting strategies adopted by novice interpreters and those by early professional interpreters. The participants of the study were twenty students taking consecutive interpreting course and nine early professional interpreters. The data, gathered from video recordings of consecutive interpreting tasks, were analyzed to identify the strategies employed by the interpreters. The findings show that there are four strategies employed by the novice interpreters and six by the early professionals. The four strategies by the novice interpreters are skipping, word for word translation, guessing, and reproduction. The six strategies by the early professional interpreters are stalling, reproduction, word for word interpretation, inferencing, approximation, and taking advantage of cohesive markers. This shows that the early professional interpreters have wider repertoire of interpreting strategies compared to their novice counterparts. The limited number of strategies employed by the novice interpreters may be caused by their limited listening capacity, limited vocabulary, and their note taking skills. This implies that the consecutive interpreting course needs to be offered for students having passed courses on basic language skills. The second implication is that the consecutive interpreting materials need to include materials on active listening, chunking, and note taking.

Abstract

This research addresses the challenge of promoting cultural heritage through digital innovation by developing a bilingual website for the Sumenep Palace Museum, the only surviving royal palace in East Java. Employing Design and Development Research methodology, the study systematically analyzed informational needs, designed an accessible platform, and implemented bilingual content in Indonesian and English. The website features comprehensive information about the museum's collections, history, and services, integrated with social media connectivity. Expert validation from IT and language specialists yielded scores of 96/100 and 80/100 respectively, while field testing with 59 participants from various nationalities produced a 90% satisfaction rate. The results demonstrate that the bilingual website effectively bridges communication gaps with international visitors, particularly during peak periods when guide availability is limited. The research contributes a practical solution to heritage preservation challenges while establishing a replicable framework for cultural institutions seeking to enhance accessibility and global reach through digital promotion strategies.
