Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze questioning activity uttered by EFL teachers in terms of contingency, convergence, and divergence in their interactions with students. Data were gathered from six chosen EFL teachers’ questions teaching to college students, hereupon were attentively transcribed and analyzed using Conversation Analysis (CA) principle. The results found that contingency questions were in the form of extending, disputing, transforming, and repeating former utterances through clarification, display, and referential questioning types. Apart from contingency, convergence appearing in teacher questions might flourish students’ responses through display questions. Meanwhile, divergent questions tend to enlarge the talks. The seemingly endless “questioning problems” improvising limitless further research studies therewith, employing more data sources in a different methodology as well as the perspective of analysis are suggested as it directly affects the teaching-learning process.

Abstract

This study is concerned with discourse semantic analysis of three selected victory speeches of the US Presidents. It was conducted for and aimed at describing, explaining, and analyzing the field, the interpersonal meaning (tenor) the mode of the texts, the schematic structure, and the unity of the texts by using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as the basis of analysis. The speech texts were changed into clauses and then analyzed. The results of the analysis found that the register category of field is similar. The transitivity patterns of the grammar, reference, and lexical string analysis share common features that is the realization of experiential action done by the speaker and audience for the progress of America. The interpersonal meaning of the texts is slightly different, in which, Joe Biden and Barack Obama established an intimate relationship with the audience, while in Donald trump’s text, the sense of intimacy and the distance with the audience are far. Since the nominal groups used were simple, the mode of all texts belongs to the spoken mode. Besides, In terms of schematic structure, the texts were constructed similarly consisting of an introduction, body, and conclusion. Finally, this study also found that the anaphoric reference which was predominantly used, a good pattern of conjunction relations, and lexical relations between lexical items appearing cross clauses categorize the texts as being highly cohesive.

Abstract

The efforts and conservation actions are needed to obtain a clean water for consumption. One of such efforts is interpreting the traditions of indigenous peoples, which are directly related to the concept of nature conservation. This study aims to identify and describe the meaning and geographical aspects of the barong wae ritual practice of the Manggarai indigenous people in the context of preserving the water environment. This research was a qualitative descriptive study with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Results show that local wisdom in the form of the barong wae ritual contains knowledge, ethics, values, and norms that are directly related to the efforts to protect the water environment. This is reflected in the meaning of the symbols, the selection of locations, and the involvement of indigenous peoples as a form and means of human interaction with the environment, especially the water environment. In conclusion, local cultural values, ethics, moral standards, and norms embodied in symbols, locations, and community involvement in the implementation of barong wae cultural rites must be preserved for the survival and sustainability of the natural environment, especially the water environment, for the next generation.

Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) has gained popularity as a linguistic theory, especially in the field of education where it provides a useful method for examining textbooks. The goal of this study is to examine how social actors are portrayed in a particular textbook utilizing SFL framework. Textual data were gathered from a sample of the textbook, and transitivity patterns of process categories and pronoun usage were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that the pronoun "he" was primarily utilized and that the material process, which denotes physical actions, was most commonly used, depicting men as the main actors. These results imply that the texts in the textbook reflect how social actors are portrayed and represented in speech and offer an understanding of their functions, choices, agency, and relations

Abstract

A worldwide discussion about the practice of assessment for learning (AfL) in online classes during the pandemic COVID-19 is scarce. The current research can have a significant impact on teaching and learning practices, and contribute to the development of evidence-based policies and practices that support student success. Thus, the current study aimed at exploring English teachers’ AfL practice in online classes. This study belonged to a basic qualitative approach and recruited four English foreign language or EFL teachers from the secondary school level. Observation and semi-structured interviews using an interview guide were conducted to gain the data. To ensure the trustworthiness of the data, other documents were collected. Subsequently, utilizing the spiral strategy, the gained data were analyzed. The results revealed that the implementation of AfL deviated from the course. Insufficient knowledge, curriculum, internet accessibility, and technological acceptance are pivotal causes of such deviation. Thus, teachers might not diagnose students’ current learning level and decide on a further teaching action. Further studies on other educational levels are demanded to explore the practice of AfL.

Abstract

The purpose of this article was to provide a brief report on how online learning is seen in the context of new normal in Indonesia. By reviewing some journal articles, news reports along with some reflective experiences from students, parents, and teachers were the basis of the report in question. As such, the results and discussion were concerned with the pro and contra regarding its implementation. In this regard, the argumentations were purely from observation, news, and digital discussion with parents, students, and colleagues supported by some findings of previous research studies. Trauma, health, and practicality were the concern of the pro while facilities, personal involvement, and intimacy were the main considerations of the contra-side. Despite a growing number of research studies, online or face to face, of greater importance are teacher’s presence, cognition presence, and social presence during the process.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know the effects of using self-recording in peer and self-assessment in language learning. This mixed-method research design with post-test control groups utilized speaking tests, rubrics, self-assessment checklists, interview guides, and teaching scenarios to collect data. Instrument preparation, validation, and reliability tests were all part of rigorous data-gathering procedures. Using stratified random sampling, participants were divided into control and experimental groups. Each group received different treatment, using self-recording for peer and self-assessment in the experimental group and traditional oral presentations in the control group. Speaking performances by students were recorded for self-and peer assessment, whereas the control group was assessed using a teacher's criteria. The results of the posttest showed that the experimental group fared much better than the control group, demonstrating the superior effectiveness of self-recording in enhancing speaking skill. In addition, the results of the interview confirmed that self-recording is meaningful for self-control, feedback, time-shifted assessment, equity, and fairness. More importantly, the transformative power of self-recording in assessments highlights the critical function of self-recording in strengthening self-regulation abilities. Thus, in educational and assessment contexts, this technique has the potential to unleash hidden self-regulation capacities, resulting in deep personal development and positive transformations.
