Abstract

This study was an attempt to examine pragmatic strategies and questioning types employed by English teachers in classroom interactions. Delivering the functions of questions by their types is insufficient to manage the flow of interaction. As such, the teachers need a certain pragmatic strategy. Data were gathered from three Indonesian English teachers. Purposefully selected teachers were observed, audio-recorded, and analyzed by using Gricean cooperative principle and politeness principle following the principle of Conservation Analysis (CA). The conservation analysis revealed that the use of external devices- adjunct to the head acts or enquirers (grounder, sweetener, and disarmer) and internal modifiers (syntactic interrogative downgraders and lexical consultative downgraders) were mostly used by the teachers in employing questions to mitigate the illocutionary act of questioning as a request. In addition, the teachers intentionally violated the maxim for the sake of managing the flow of conservation. Subsequently, this study mirrors previous research findings that display questions as the most frequent strategies used to extend the talk and to invite learner response. Instead of analyzing questions that conventionally associate those with speech act theory, social aspects of interpersonal normativity (being responsible and autonomous) might be of benefit in sharing social-communicative intentions in order to extend the classroom talk.

As one of Indonesian local culture, penti has some values that can be of benefit to build students’ good character and be a guidance, not only for local people but also for students to properly behave with others and nature.

Abstract

The use of Cooperative Learning (CL) has attracted a great attention in the field. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of CL in question along with local-culture-based materials toward students’ reading achievement. To achieve this goal, mixed method research design was employed incorporating cluster-random sampling technique of the third- grade- college students as the population. Post-test and interview were carried out to get the data which then were respectively analyzed statically and content analysis. The findings demonstrated that online Cooperative Learning (CL) along with local-culture-based materials was of benefit for better students’ reading achievement. This occurred as the pupils have good knowledge background to understand the texts in classroom activities. More importantly, students’ ability in predicting the idea of the text was better. To add the two essential features of CL, positive interdependence and individual accountability, text familiarity that so-called local-based-culture is demanded in implementing the online CL. In this respect, being cooperative does not solely guarantee successful learning. Content and text- familiarity are important to cope with.

Abstract

This study wants to challenge the robust idea of previous findings revealing that employing a particular question type would necessarily functions as Assessment for Learning (AfL). Besides, this study extends previous research focusing on typology and examines the syntactical forms of questioning in its practice. To gather data, six Indonesian English teachers were observed and audio- recorded, thus, transcribed and analysed following the principle of Conversation Analysis (CA). Except referential type functioning as a teaching technique and a discourse marker choice to discursively extend the classroom talk, the result of analysis corroborates previous studies in that they provide diagnostic information from which a better further action was taken place as highlighted in the AfL. Yet, this might occur as questioning types are syntactically constructed following classroom discourse moves. Thus, the examination of questionings functioning as Assessment for Learning (AfL), aside from types, the syntactical form and classroom discourse moves are important to cope with.

Abstract

Blended learning necessitates a digitization technology on the part of both instructors and students, the use of up-to-date instructional strategies, adaptable learning procedures, the efficiency of the processes, space, and financial resources, as well as learner motivation and independence; all of these factors lead to a rise in learner academic achievement. Unfortunately, the results ofthe most recent empirical studies do not support the idea that blended learning help learners enhance their English proficiency and their level of learning independence. There is proof that blended learning impacts the English proficiency, learning independence, enthusiasm, and ICT skills of students. This article analyzed and quantified the effectiveness of blended learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study is a quantitative explanatory research type with a pre-test and post-test design. One hundred eighty students from the Agronomy Study Program at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng participated in the study. A method of random sampling was utilized, and from that population, 73 participants were selected as samples. Data was taken by test and non test, then analyzed by a software program called SPSS 22.0. Teen blended learning sessions, including five face-to-face and five virtual sessions, are conducted using the Zoom platform. The findings indicate that students' English language skills improve with blended learning (the mean score on the posttest was 82.57), as do their levels of learning independence (82.44%), learning enthusiasm (76%), and ICT skills (70.43%).
