Abstract

This research was conducted on 68 speech data containing code mixing. In terms of the type of code mixing, there were 67 data (98.5%) of outer code mixing and 1 data (1.5%) of hybrid mixing code. The data shows that code mixing based on its type occurs because it is dominantly influenced by the boarding school regulations which require the use of Arabic and English, and prohibit the use of local languages. This has an impact on the two languages appearing more often in speech. Other findings show that code mixing based on its form there are 46 data using word form (67.6%) with details of 5 data (7.4%) in the form of baster, and 17 data (25%) in the form of phrase. This correlates with the form of Arabic baster and phrases which are quite difficult to find the equivalent meaning in Indonesian. No clauses and idioms were found because the use of larger forms was chosen by Ustazah Nida through code-switching and the choice of words used had the full lexical meaning.  The forms that appear indicate the choice of code mix related to the Arabic language learning process.

Abstract

This research explores the intricate phenomenon of code-switching and code-mixing within the realm of bilingual aphasia patients who converse in both Sundanese and Indonesian. This research is essential to understanding the code-switching and code-mixing phenomenon to improve rehabilitation and effective communication for these patients. Employing a descriptive-qualitative methodology, this study aims to shed light on the language dynamics exhibited by these individuals. To this end, data were meticulously gathered through participant observation in everyday communication, supplemented by in-depth interviews conducted with family members and language therapists. The findings from meticulous data analysis illuminate that aphasia patients fluently alternate between Sundanese and Indonesian, frequently engaging in code-switching and code-mixing when grappling with linguistic expression or comprehension difficulties. Furthermore, this language phenomenon manifests in the patients' inclination toward employing shorter and simpler sentence structures. Consequently, these results underscore the importance of accounting for language selection, code-switching, and code-mixing within the language therapy process for Sundanese-Indonesian bilingual aphasia patients. Language therapists are urged to comprehend and adapt to the patients' flexible language utilization while devising tailored therapeutic strategies to enhance their linguistic proficiency. Moreover, this research calls for future investigations to explore this captivating phenomenon across diverse cohorts of bilingual aphasia patients, thus broadening our understanding of the intricacies involved.

Abstract

Translating Russian proper names into Indonesian poses linguistic and cultural challenges since Russian anthroponyms, comprising full names, patronymics, and diminutives, encode complex semantic and pragmatic meanings often overlooked in translation. This study aims to examine how these meanings are conveyed in Indonesian literary translations and what cultural implications arise from the process. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected from four Russian literary works translated into Indonesian and analyzed for semantic, pragmatic, communicative, and cultural dimensions. The findings show that most translations fail to reflect the rich social and emotional nuances embedded in Russian anthroponyms. Diminutives, which express intimacy and social bonds, and patronymics, which signify respect and cultural identity, are frequently neutralized or omitted. The study concludes that Indonesian translators tend to prioritize linguistic equivalence over cultural accuracy, leading to the loss of socio-pragmatic depth. This research contributes to cross-cultural translation studies by underscoring the need for culturally sensitive approaches in translating personal names

Abstract

This study is motivated by the fact that Arabic, with its complex inflectional system, poses significant challenges for students with an agglutinative mother tongue such as Indonesian, especially regarding grammatical agreement between subjects and verbs. This study aims to examine and analyze students' ability to perform grammatical agreement through written language by applying a qualitative descriptive method to investigate grammatical agreement in Arabic texts produced by 12th-grade students at a modern Islamic boarding school in Sumedang. Data collection was carried out using direct observation and analysis of descriptive text documents created by students. The analysis focused on sentences containing Arabic verbs. The linguistic data were then analyzed systematically using a distributional method to reveal patterns of grammatical agreement and the underlying basantara process. The distribution method was used to reduce the data, which was then analyzed using the distributional method. Three main strategies were used by students when dealing with subject-verb agreement in Arabic: (1) Replacement of verbs with nouns, a reflection of direct transfer from their native language, which proves that in acquiring Arabic, students tend to transfer grammatical patterns from Indonesian into Arabic texts; (2) The use of conventional verbs without change, a manifestation of overgeneralization that shows the assumption that Arabic verb formation rules are universal, thus failing to apply verb conjugation forms that match the subject; and (3) Examples of accurate subject-verb agreement, evidence of ongoing basantara development, also show an increase in accuracy in the target language acquisition process.

Abstract

This study examines how assertive illocutionary speech acts are employed in CNN Arabic media discourse to convey ideology and power dynamics in news coverage of the normalization of Saudi Arabia-Israel relations. This study employed descriptive-qualitative method with a critical pragmatics approach using Korta and Perry (2011) model which includes stances, critique, and reproduction. The data in the forms of texts were collected by documentation from six CNN Arabic news segments featuring statements by prominent figures, including Benjamin Netanyahu, Anthony Blinken, and Faisal bin Farhan. The data were analyzed by interpretation with the result that CNN Arabic tends to prioritize representing social actors from the Unites States and Israel as its main sources of information that from Saudi Arabia and Palestine. Through assertive speech acts, such stating, explaining, telling, and claiming, the media constructs discourses that favor the Western pro-normalization hegemonic ideology. This study reveals that these language strategies are not neutral but play a role in reproducing power and framing public opinion on sensitive geopolitical issues in the Middle East.

Abstract

Despite sustained policy initiatives to promote Bahasa Indonesia internationally, its strategic development as a regional lingua franca within the ASEAN Economic Community has received limited scholarly attention, particularly in relation to economic integration and multilingual governance. This study examines whether Indonesian can function as a regional lingua franca in ASEAN and analyses how its internal linguistic conditions (strengths and weaknesses) and external environment (opportunities and threats) shape its internationalization prospects. Employing a qualitative research design, the study applies a structured SWOT analysis to official policy documents, institutional strategies, and regional cooperation frameworks relevant to ASEAN. The findings reveal that, despite strong demographic presence, legal recognition, and geopolitical significance, the internationalization of Indonesian is constrained by fragmented governance, limited cross-sectoral coordination, and the absence of a coherent long-term strategic roadmap. The study argues that advancing Indonesian as a regional lingua franca requires a paradigmatic shift in language policy, reconceptualizing it as a multi-sectoral process integrated with diplomacy, economic cooperation, education, and cultural governance. Rather than serving solely as a communicative medium, Indonesian must be positioned as a strategic policy asset embedded within ASEAN’s political–economic structures. By situating Indonesian within a Global South perspective, this study contributes to broader debates on regional lingua franca formation beyond English-centred models.

Abstract

Background: Following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel's military attacks on Palestine have become increasingly brutal, sparking massive protests by students at Western universities.  Al Jazeera plays a significant role in shaping public perception of this discourse. In its reporting, Al Jazeera frequently uses metaphors. The fire metaphor is among the most effective and is often used in various contexts. Aims: This research aims to examine the conceptual metaphor of fire in Al Jazeera Arabic's discourse on pro-Palestinian student protests at western universities and reveal its ideological functions. Methods: This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with analysis grounded in conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) (Lakoff & Johnson, 2003). The data source was pro-Palestinian student protest discourse on Al Jazeera Arabic. Data analysis uses the metaphor identification procedure (MIP) by the Pragglejaz Group. Results: These findings reveal that Al Jazeera Arabic uses lexemes related to fire to conceptualize and frame pro-Palestinian student protests at Western universities. Among the thirteen lexemes found, ʔimtadda ‘spread’ (19 data), ʔintašara 'spread' (12 data), and šarārah 'spark' (12 data) appear most frequently to highlight the rapid escalation of the protest movement and its massive impact. The metaphorical mapping of all the lexemes found constructs the conceptual metaphor PROTEST IS FIRE, highlighting student action as a significant and impactful force like fire. Implications: The significance of this research lies in its contribution to expanding the understanding of how the fire metaphors is not only a linguistic feature but also a cognitive and ideological device for shaping public perceptions of pro-Palestinian protests.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of container image schemas in Arabic quotations on the Telegram channel عطر الورد ‘Iṭru al-Ward’. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a cognitive semantic approach. The research data were taken from Arabic quotations on the Telegram channel عطر الورد ‘Iṭru al-Ward’ uploaded in October 2024. The data were analyzed based on the theoretical framework of conceptual metaphor and image schema. The research results show that there are 16 container image schemas formed from two types of conceptual metaphors, namely 13 ontological metaphors and 3 structural metaphors. The container image schemas are classified into four categories, namely 7 containment, 5 full-empty, 3 content, and 1 in-out. Meanwhile, the surface image schema was not found in this research data. The research findings indicate that Arab society conceptualizes emotional and spiritual conditions through container metaphors, where the heart, soul, and life are understood as spaces that can be filled, emptied, or traversed by various feelings and experiences. This study can contribute to Arabic language learners in understanding abstract metaphorical meanings through a cognitive semantic approach.

Abstract

The Palestinian movement landscape has seen a tremendous rise following the rising death toll in Gaza. Among the loudest voices have been US campuses' student protests against their government and academic institutions' complicity in the war. In the face of the public opinion shift, this qualitative descriptive study aims to unravel how CNN Arabic maintains discursive power in its coverage of the pro-Palestinian protests. Focusing on CNN Arabic's initial reporting of the 'Gaza Solidarity Encampment,' this study analyzes the data by applying Theo Van Leeuwen's critical discourse analysis framework, specifically the Social Actors Approach. By utilizing this framework, the author examines CNN Arabic's representation of social actors in its narrative, exploring both their exclusion and inclusion. In light of the results, the author categorizes the data into three categories: the representation of (1) Columbia students, (2) the Columbia University president and critics, and (3) external actors. The results demonstrate CNN Arabic's elaborate use of both exclusion and inclusion strategies. Inclusion strategies were used repeatedly to marginalize student protesters and the university president, as well as to establish the credibility of external sources. On the other hand, exclusion strategies were used much less, primarily to divert readers' attention from the real issue and protect critics of the protests. By employing these strategies, CNN Arabic is able to maintain its discursive power, regain public influence, and convey negative sentiments toward the pro-Palestinian protesters.
