Abstract

This study presents a textual and contextual analysis of the podcast featuring Deddy Corbuzier and Aiman Witjaksono using Teun A. Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis model, and examines its relevance to the teaching of expository texts to 10th-grade students at MA Darut Tauhid in Krejengan, Probolinggo. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data sources including podcast transcripts, observation results, interviews with teachers and students, and learning documentation. Data collection techniques involved observation, interviews, note-taking, and documentation, while data analysis was conducted through the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the macro structure of the podcast focuses on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on human life. The podcast’s superstructure is systematically organized through an introduction, development of arguments, and conclusion. The micro structure is characterized by the use of persuasive, evaluative, and emotional language. In terms of social context and social cognition, the study explains the influence of social reality, knowledge, and the speaker’s experiences in constructing discourse. Additionally, the podcast is relevant as a medium for teaching expository texts because it can develop students’ critical thinking skills through information analysis and the construction of logical arguments.

Abstract

This study examines the novel Tanjung Kemarau by Royyan Julian through an ecosemiotic perspective to explore cultural resistance and environmental advocacy in Madura Island. The primary focus of this research is how cultural symbols and narratives in the novel reflect the close relationship between the local community and the environment, particularly the mangrove forests. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study analyzes the symbolism and meanings related to ecological and cultural issues in the novel. The findings show that mangrove forests are not only viewed as physical ecosystems but also as sacred spaces revered by the community. Mystical figures such as Nyai Rasera and the village cleansing rituals are depicted as part of the community's efforts to preserve the environment and resist commercial exploitation. The novel serves as a form of resistance against environmentally destructive modernization practices, while also acting as an advocacy tool emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural values in ecological conservation. This research enriches the discourse of ecosemiotics in Indonesian literary studies and highlights the potential of literature as a medium for culturally-based environmental advocacy.

Abstract

Language use within a community exhibits diversity influenced by the social characteristics of its speakers; age is one such factor that shapes distinct intergenerational communication patterns. This study aims to describe language variation based on age and the relationship between language variation and age within the community of Kertosono Village, Gading District, Probolinggo Regency. A qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic design was employed. Data collection involved observation, interviews, and documentation involving community members representing children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that language variation among children is characterized by simple, spontaneous language suited to daily communication needs. Adolescents exhibit the use of slang, code-mixing, abbreviations, and social media registers influenced by technological advancements and social circles. Adults employ language that is more structured, polite, and contextual, reflecting their occupations and social responsibilities. Meanwhile, the elderly tend to maintain the use of the Madurese language, traditional vocabulary, and religious terms, influenced by their life experiences, culture, and social values. The relationship between language variation and age demonstrates that age differences influence vocabulary choice, language style, speech structure, and topics of conversation; consequently, each age group possesses distinct linguistic characteristics shaped by social development, life experiences, and communication environments.
