Abstract

Ultisol is very promising area for Indonesian chili pepper production. This experiment aimed to determine General Combining Ability (GCA), Specific Combining Ability (SCA), heterosis and heterobeltiosis estimates of seven parental lines; A(KG1), B(KG2), C(KG3), D(KG4), E(KG5/UNIB-C-GTS1), F(KG6), and G(KG7) through full-diallel parental crosses. Experiment was conducted from July to November 2012 and designed in Randomized Complete Block with three replications. Results indicated that parent C(KG 3) had the highest GCA estimates for fruit length and fruit weight per plant. Parent F(KG6) had the highest fruit number per plant. Parents B(KG2), D(KD4) and G(KD7) had the highest GCA estimates for fruit diameter. Cross combinations C(KG3)xF(KG6) had the highest SCA estimates for fruit weight and fruit number per plant, whereas G(KG7)xC(KG3) and D(KG4)xG(KG7) had the highest SCA estimates for fruit length and fruit diameter. Cross combinations G(KG7)xC(KG3) and F(KG6)xC(KG3) had the highest heterosis and heterobeltiosis estimates for fruit weight per plant, whereas D(KG4)xB(KG2) and D(KG4)xE(KG5) had the highest heterosis and heterobeltiosis estimates for fruit number per plant. Cross combinations B(KG2)xE(KG5) and D(KG4)xG(KG7) had the highest heterosis and heterobeltiosis estimates for fruit length and fruit diameter. It is suggested that G(KG7)xC(KG3) and F(KG6)xC(KG3) are the most promising chili pepper hybrids grown in Ultisol.

Abstract

Recently, application of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) in organic farming practices is of importance to prevent further soil degradation due to prolong and massive use of synthetic fertilizer. LOF provides faster plant nutrients than soil organic fertilizer. However, quality of LOF is substantially dependent on its sources. Animal wastes from rabbit, goat, and cattle are scarcely used as sources of LOF production. The study aimed to determine soil chemical improvement and potassium uptake by mung bean  as affected by LOF in Ultisol. The experiment was conducted at the Greenhouse Faculty of Agriculture, employing Completely Randomized Design with two factors. The first factor was animal wastes, consisting of goat, rabbit, and cattle wastes. The second factor was LOF concentration, consisting of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% LOF. LOF was prepared by mixing altogether animal feces, urine, soil, green biomass, EM-4 and fresh water to total volume of 10 l in a plastic container. LOF was decanted to the polybag every week starting at one week after planting for four weeks to a total volume of 750 ml per polybag. Variables observed included soil pH, total organic-C, exchangeable K, soil nitrate-N, K concentration in plant tissue, K-uptake, and shoot dry weight of sweet corn The result showed that application of LOF from rabbit waste had the highest increment of soil pH as compared to the other treatment. However, exchangeable K was observed highest at the treatment of LOF from goat waste. Sources of LOF from animal wastes did not have an effect on K-uptake by mung bean. In addition, application of LOF up to 100% was able to improve soil chemical properties as indicated by the increase in soil pH and exchangeable K. So did the concentration and uptake of K, as well as shoot dry weight. Fertilization with LOF has benefit to the improvement of soil chemical properties leading to better K uptake.

Abstract

Efforts to fulfill food demands for Indonesian to comply with population increases endorse to extend production areas to marginal lands. Sorghum which has an ability to adapt with less favourable growing environments almost has nutritional values as good as corn, but this crop is less cultivated by farmers. Adaptation mechanisms of sorghum to environmental stresses are by producing natural allelopathies. Those allelochemicals could be properly managed as natural herbicides for sorghum production in swamplands. This review aimed to describe the potential uses of allelochemicals produced by sorghum for sustainable sorghum production in swamplands. Reviews concluded that (1) sorghum is most likely suitable for swamplands due to its wide range abilities to cope biotic and abiotic stressors, (2) sorghum is able to increase the production of sorgoleone, dhurrin and phenolic allelochemicals, and (3) those allelochemical extracts could be developed as bioherbicide compounds for sustainable production of various crops.

Abstract

Application of organomineral fertilizer (OMF), which is the product of the inclusion of zeolite and  palm oil compost in urea needs to be studied to determine its appropriate dose for the growth and yield of shallots and N substitution. This pot experiment was conducted from October to December 2020 at the Teaching and Research Field of Agriculture Faculty and consisted of five treatments arranged in a completely randomized design with five replications. The treatments were (1) 1.0 g urea, (2) 0.5 g urea + 1.15 g OMF, (3) 0.5 g urea + 2.30 g OMF, (4) 0.5 g urea + 3.45 g OMF, and (5) 0.5 g urea + 4.60 g OMF. The results showed that combined application of 0.5 g urea + 4.60 g OMF produced the highest values of plant height (30.60 cm), number of leaves (30.90), fresh weight of tubers per clump (30.90 g),  dry tuber weight per clump (24.3 g), and tuber diameter (16.25 mm). The incorporation of zeolite and palm oil compost in urea reduced the application rate of urea up to 50% without reducing the growth and yield of shallot. Thus, N fertilizer use can be enhanced if urea is co-applied with zeolite and palm oil compost.

Abstract

Applying organic fertilizer and intercropping systems are among the techniques for preserving land sustainability in organic vegetable production systems. In organic vegetable production, the use of liquid organic fertilizer has been suggested in addition to the use of solid organic fertilizer. This study evaluates how growth and yields of sweet corn and peanuts grown utilizing row intercropping respond to different vermicomposting dosages. A factorial experiment is arranged using a split-plot design with three replicates. The main plot is vermicomposting dosages; 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 Mg/ha, and the sub-plot was the applications of liquid organic fertilizer, not fertilized and fertilized with liquid organic fertilizer. Results show that the application of liquid organic fertilizer elevated plant height and leaf area, length, diameter, and weight of husked ears of sweet corn. Vermicomposting increased plant height, husked ear length, husked ear diameter, and husked ear fresh weight of sweet corn. Twenty Mg/ha is the best dosage for producing sweet corn intercropped with peanuts. However, using vermicompost and liquid organic fertilizers did not increase the growth and yields of peanuts. Evaluation of nutrient uptakes by intercropped crops, sweet corn, and peanut, in organic production systems, should be the subject of further study.
