Abstract

Cucumber is a popular vegetable that can be consumed fresh or processed into pickles, preserves, and other products. Efforts to enhance cucumber yield have been made through the application of Azolla compost and inorganic nitrogen (N) fertilizer. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between different doses of Azolla compost and inorganic N fertilizer on cucumber growth and yield, as well as to determine the optimal doses of both fertilizers. The experiment was conducted from December 2021 to February 2022 in Medan Baru, Muara Bangkahulu District, Bengkulu City. A factorial randomized complete block design was employed with two factors: (1) Azolla compost doses (0 g plant-1, 90 g plant-1, 180 g plant-1, and 270 g plant-1) and (2) inorganic N fertilizer doses (0 g plant-1, 0.9 g plant-1, 1.7 g plant-1, and 2.5 g plant-1), resulting in 16 treatment combinations, each replicated three times. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at a 5% significance level, followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test for significant variables. Results indicated that there were no significant interaction effects between Azolla compost and inorganic N fertilizer on cucumber growth and yield. The 180 g plant-1 dose of Azolla compost produced the best results in terms of vine length, leaf number, fruit weight per plant, and plant dry weight. However, inorganic N fertilizer had no significant effect on cucumber growth and yield. Further research is needed to explore the effects of inorganic N fertilizer and the potential of Azolla as an environmentally friendly organic fertilizer in sustainable agricultural systems.

Abstract

Potato production is increasingly encountered with drought stress, which is one of the factors in affecting agricultural yields as a result of the dynamics of global climate change and the agricultural environment. Efforts to improve the ability of potatoes to adapt with drought stress could be done through plant breeding approaches and a combination of various agronomic practices. This review aims to describe the application of agronomic action strategies that can be used to improve the ability of potatoes to adapt to drought conditions. Various agronomic practices  can be applied to mitigate the stressful potatoes to have maximum production grown under drought conditions. These mitigations include the use of drought tolerant varieties, selection of planting material, spacing, selection of the right planting time, providing shade, using organic and inorganic mulch, agricultural land management, weed and pest controls, cropping systems, row-planting orientations, using organic fertilizers and applying beneficial microorganisms.

Abstract

Indonesia needs to develop high yielding wheat varieties adapted to tropical highland environment, through benefit selection in order to reduce grain imports. Pretiminary studies are often conducted to support the selection of activities to determine whether there is a closeness connection or relationship between variables with other variables through correlation studies. This study aims to determine the level of closeness between vegetative and generative variables and results in each 18 genotypes of wheat grown in the highlands. This study used a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The treatments are 18 wheat genotypes : M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, M9, SO 3, SO-8, SO- 9, JARISSA, SELAYAR, NIAS, DEWATA, SO-10, SO-6. Results showed that, plant height and number of seeds per panicle were positively correlated closely with yield of grain weight per clump.  Plant height of JARISSA and NIAS, and the number of seeds/panicle of M2, M3, M7, JARISSA and NIAS.  So that, variable can be used as selection criteria for potential high wheat genotypes grown at higher altitudes in tropical conditions, when the power of inheritance have predictive value (heritability) high. Therefore, these characters can be used as selection criteria for high yielding wheat genotypes.

Abstract

Growing lettuce on lowland mineral soil is an alternative to increase lettuce production. Mineral soil with less fertile soil property needs additional organic matter when it is used as growing medium for lettuce plants . The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth and yield of lettuce on some mineral soil types and different doses of cow manure. The research was conducted in Surabaya village, Sungai Serut District, Bengkulu City. The experiment used a completely randomized design, two factors, five replications. The first factor was the three types of mineral soils, consisted of Inceptisol, Ultisol and Entisol. The second factor was dose of cow manure, consisted of 0 ton/ha, 5 ton/ha (7.065 g/polybag), 10 ton/ ha (14.13g/polybag), and 15 ton/ha (21.19 g/polybag ). Each combination was repeated 5 times in order to obtain 60 experimental units. The results showed that the mineral Ultisol generally resulted in better growth of lettuce plants than it was at Inceptisol and Entisols, which were indicated by the higher degree of the leaf greenness leaves, root fresh weight and shoot fresh weight. Dosage of fertilizer up to 15 tonnes/ha significantly increased shoot fresh weight and root fresh weight of plants. The interaction between soil types and doses of cow manure occured only on the variable of root fresh weight when it was grown on Ultisol with dose of cow manure at 8.07 tonnes/ha.

Abstract

Elaeisponic is new introducing growing technique to produce vegetables by planting it in the frond based of oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). However, there was no previous report on vegetable production by using elaeisponic production system, including the use of foliar fertilizers. This study aimed to determine the optimum consentrations and frequency of foliar fertilization for caisim grown in elaesisponic production system. An experiment was conducted in oil palm plantation area by using a factorial randomized complete block design with three replicates. The first factor of treatment consisted of three levels of foliar fertilizer concentration, 1 g l-1, 2 g l-1 and 3 g l-1, and the second factor was application frequency of foliar fertilizer, 7 days after transplanting (DAT), 7, 14 DAT and 7, 14, 21 DAT. Crop responses were determined on leaf greenness (SPAD index), shoot fresh weight (g), root fresh weight (g), leaf area (cm2) and plant dry weight.  Results indicated that both concentration of foliar fertilizer and frequency of application as wells as its interaction did not significatly affect leaf greenness, leaf area, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight and plant dry weight of caisim plants.  Further research should be addressed on optimizing the use of palm oil frond bases as growing medium for vegetable production.  Keywords: Elaeisponic Production System; Brassica juncea L; Foliar Fertilizer; Frequency of Application.

Abstract

Vermicompost is one of increasingly applied organic fertilizer to many vegetable crops in order to reduce the dependency on synthetic fertilizer, including the use of urea as nitrogen source. This experiment aimed to determine the best dosage combination of vermicompost and synthetic urea on growth and yields of mung bean grown in Ultisols. This experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design  with three replicates. Treatments consisted of  (1) control, no urea and no vermicompost, (2) 50 kg/ha urea + no vermicompost, (3) 40 kg/ha urea + 3 Mg/ha vermicompost, (4) 30 kg/ha urea + 6 Mg/ha vermicompost, (5) 20 kg/ha urea + 9 Mg/ha vermicompost, (6) 10 kg/ha urea + 12 Mg/ha vermicompost, and (7) 0 kg/ha urea + 15 Mg/ha vermicompost.  Results indicated that the combination of urea and vermicompost increased plant height, leaf number, branch number, number of nodules/plant, shoot to root ratio, number of pods/plant, number of pods/plot, grain dry weight/plant, grain dry weight/plot, and total yield /ha, but not days to flowering and weight of 100 grains. The best combination to increased growth and yields of mung bean was 12 Mg/ha of vermicompost in combination with 10 kg/ha of urea.  This combination  produced the highest grain yields/ha (2.1 Mg/ha).
