Abstract

Students’ engagement becomes essential factors in learning process because students have to participate in learningprocess. Not only the students but also the teachers have to make a good atmosphere during classroom activities. They have to createlesson, assignment and also project that interested to the students. Students’ cognitive engagement involves the students to thinkduring academic task, they have to have motivated to improve their ability in learning and also they have to participate and active inthe classroom. This paper is literary study.

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa eksistensi dari nilai pendidikan karakter pada buku teks yang digunakan pada mata kuliah Reading di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dimana data pada penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan wawancara. Subjek pada penelitian ini adalah dosen yang telah dan mengajar pada mata kuliah Reading dan mahasiswa yang telah mengikuti mata kuliah tersebut. Objek dari penelitian ini adalah buku teks yang digunakan pada mata kuliah Reading di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Berdasarkan hasil interview diketahui bahwa buku teks yang digunakan tersebut belum mengandung nilai pendidikan karakter yang harus dipelajari dan dibutuhkan oleh mahasiswa. Buku teks tersebut hanya mengandung sembilan nilai pendidikan karakter dari 18 nilai yang terdapat pada Permendikbud tersebut. Nilai karakter yang terdapat dalam buku teks Reading adalah religius, jujur, kreatif, mandiri, kerja keras, rasa ingin tahu, gemar membaca, peduli sosial dan tanggung jawab. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa buku reading yang telah digunakan di jurusan bahasa Inggris di Sumatera Barat belum sepenuhnya mengandung nilai pendidikan karakter. Kata kunci: Pendidikan karakter, buku teks reading, analisa kebutuhan Abstract The aim of this research is to analyze the existence of character education which is included in the textbook used in Reading subject at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. This research is qualitative research which the data were collected through interview. Subject of this research is the lecturers who have taught Reading subject and the students who have complied that subject. The object of this research is the textbook used in Reading subject at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Based on interview results, it is known that the textbook used in Reading subject does not have character education contents which is needed and learnt by the college students. The textbook used only have nine out of eighteen characters mentioned in Permendikbud No49Tahun2014. They are, religius, honest, creative, independent, hardwork, curiosity, fond of reading, social care and responsible. It can be concluded that the reading textbook used at English Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat has not indicated the use of characters educational values yet. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis tuturan kesantunan positif yang digunakan guru dan siswa dalam melakukan interaksi di kelas dalam pembelajaran bahasa inggris. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam metode deskriptif-kualitatif. Peneliti melakukan penelitian pada kelas XI jurusan IPA dan PK. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada sembilan strategi kesantunan positif. Jumlah total data yang ditemukan adalah 49. Hasil analisis mengungkapkan bahwa Notice attend to hearer ada 6 data, Intensify interest to hearer 9 data, Identify Markers 2 data, Seek Agreement 16 data, Avoid Disagreement 5 data, Be Optmistic 2 data, Include both speaker and hearer 1 data, Give or ask reason 3 data dan Give gifts to hearer 4 data. Data yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah Seek Agreement dan data yang paling sedikit adalah Include both speaker and hearer.Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa dan guru menggunakan strategi kesantunan positive dalam bertutur kata dalam diskusi dikelas.

Abstract

Peer feedback on oral presentation is still an unexplored area. Much research has been conducted on peer feedback in various teaching and learning contexts, only a few about how peer gives feedback on his/her partner’ oral presentations. The study described here focuses using peer feedback on oral presentations. Analyzing data from semi-structured interviews, this case study investigated impact of giving peer feedback on oral presentations used by English as Foreign Language (EFL) college students on other student’s oral presentation tasks. Data analysis revealed that the peer gave oral feedback mainly focused on content-related criteria (quality of introduction, structure, and conclusion). Most of the peers focused on the nature of the delivery (eye-contact, vocal delivery, enthusiasm, interaction with the audience and body-language), and a few focused on a general quality and on the design of the students’ PowerPoint (PPT) slides.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the lecturers' perception of the Basic Reading textbook used in the Basic Reading Course. This study used a qualitative approach with a total of 2 respondents. The data collection technique used semi-structured interviews with 2 English Education Study Program lecturers at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. The results of this study explained that lecturers' perception toward Basic Reading textbook was based on four main components of the Basic Reading textbook, namely: content, vocabulary and grammar, exercises and activities and as well as the attractiveness and physical make up of the textbook. The lecturers' perception of the content of the textbook was very helpful for students in understanding learning. Regarding vocabulary and grammar in the Basic Reading textbook, according to the lecturer who used the Basic Reading textbook, the used of vocabulary and grammar was easy to understand and in accordance with student abilities. The activities used have an effect on students in implementing character education in the learning process. Exercises also required students to think critically. The attractiveness and physical make up of the textbook showed that the textbook cover and pictures on the textbook were very attractive to students because the textbook components are based on Multimodality. Multimodality is a combination of elements such as visual design, pictures, writing variations, layout, utterance, diagrams and tables and more.

Abstract

ABSTRAKAbstrak adalah ringkasan atau poin dari sebuah laporan hasil penelitian ataupun karya ilmiah. Fenomena yang ditemukan dikebanyakan abstrak adalah belum terpenuhinya isi yang lengkap pada abstrak sesuai dengan indikator. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui komponen dan abstrak pada jurnal artikel wisudawan ke-61 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dimana menggunakan metode content analysis. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini berupa jurnal artikel  wisudawan/ti  ke-61 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Peneliti menggunakan dokumen ceklis dan field notes sebagai  instrumen  dalam  penelitian  ini.  Pada  penelitian  ini,  peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan menggunakan purpossive sampling, yaitu mengambil jurnal  artikel  berdasarkan  mahasiswa yang telah lulus dalam rentang waktu 4 tahun.  Peneliti menganalisis data dengan cara melihat setiap komponen dari masing-masing jurnal artikel. Ada 4 teknik analisis data yang digunakan oleh peneliti yaitu the process involves preparing the data for analyzing, organizing different analysis, understanding the data deeply, representing the data, and interpreting the large meaning of the data. Dari tekni analisis data tersebut, peneliti menemukan hasil dari penelitian yaitu abstrak pada jurnal artikel wisudawan masih terdapat kekurangan dalam membuat introduction, method, result, dan discussion. Dari hasil penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa  komponen abstrak  pada  jurnal  artikel  wisudawan  ke-61  masih  belum  lengkap. Jadi untuk selanjutnya, sebelum menulis abstrak penulis harus memperhatikan komponen abstrak seperti yang sudah dijelaskan oleh teori.Kata Kunci: Abstrak, Jurnal Artikel, Komponen Abstrak.

Abstract

The study aims to describe the pre-service English teachers’ perceptions and attitudes toward World Englishes (WE) Paradigm from Kachru's theory within the Indonesian context. Limited studies have been undertaken relating to Indonesian pre-service teachers’ perceptions and attitudes to the WE paradigm. The design of this study employed a qualitative case study focusing on the exploration of an individual pre-service English teacher’s perceptions and attitudes toward the phenomenon of the WE paradigm. Twenty participants who are pre-service English teachers participated in this study. Initially, the participants were asked to take The Verbal Guise Test to for stimulating the participants’ knowledge (cognitive) about varieties of English and introduce the WE paradigm. Afterward, the semi-structured interview was conducted with open-ended questions to explore how the students view different varieties of WE. The data were then transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis by coding, classifying themes, and interpreting. The findings of the study indicated that academically participants still have a preference of the inner circle (IC) English to support the learning process. But for non-academic context the majority of participants had the ability to understand and recognize English variations and showed interest in using and learning more about WE.

Abstract

This present paper reports finding from a study dealt with the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ metacognitive reading strategies. A total of 68 students were selected enrolled in English department of private university in West Sumatra and they were asked to complete a survey. However, after analysing the data, only the data from 38 students as participants could be included in the report. In this quantitative survey, the instrument used to gather data was based on a Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS). The study’s findings revealed that the Global Reading Strategies was the most frequently used, followed by the Support Reading Strategies and the Problem-Solving Strategies. Furthermore, implications of the finding are discussed in relation to reading comprehension of foreign language teaching and learning.

Abstract

This research was motivated by application of the Discovery Learning Model by an English Teacher who teach at tenth grade of SMAN 1 Koto Salak. The researcher wants to know how the teacher applies the discovery Learning Model used in teaching narrative text. Then, this research uses a qualitative method with an autobiography case study that aims to analyze and see from the personal experience of a teacher in delivering learning materials in narrative text. Meanwhile, participant in this study was a teacher who teaches English at tenth grade and has applied the Discovery Learning Model. Data collection was carried out by researcher uses interviews. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the English teacher has implemented the principles of discovery learning Model well, namely the teacher forms students into several groups, the teacher provides opportunities to complete assignments or problems that have been given according to the subject matter, the teacher facilitate students to collect information through books and internet, teachers assist students in gathering information, and ask students to present their findings in front of class. In conclusion, it can be said that Discovery Learning Model applied by English teacher at SMAN 1 Koto Salak is going well.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat jenis-jenis pertanyaan yang digunakan guru dalam interaksi kelas bahasa Inggris di SMAN 15 Padang. Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian descriptive melalui pendekatan qualitative. Partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah tiga orang guru bahasa Inggris di SMAN 15 Padang. Data dikumpulkan dari 3 guru bahasa Inggris melalui pengamatan kelas dengan merekam proses belajar mengajar yang dilakukan oleh guru dan melalui proses wawancara guru dengan perekam audio. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru bahasa Inggris di SMAN 15 Padang menerapkan jenis pertanyaan ini dalam interaksi bahasa Inggris di kelas. Ditemukan bahwa guru 1 dan 3 menggunakan 5 dari 6 jenis soal, sedangkan guru 2 menggunakan semua jenis soal. Selain itu ditemukan bahwa alasan guru menggunakan pertanyaan dalam interaksi kelas bahasa Inggris di SMAN 15 Padang sesuai dengan indikator yang peneliti temukan.
