Abstract

Use of face masks and respirators are significant in preventing the transmission of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) via respiratory droplets or aerosols. The development of face masks and respirators have beenfocused on the modification using nanoparticles (NPs) to obtain biocidal activities. The incorporation ofNPs can also increase the hydrophobicity of the material that assists the repelling of virus carrying dropletsor aerosols. Nevertheless, the common cost of gaining those benefits is breathability. Previous studies havereported on the discomforts of wearing a face mask or respirator, one of which is stems from breathingdifficulty. At the time of pandemic, maintaining the comfort wearing of face masks or respirators is evenmore crucial. Thus, this review article is important to keep the breathability aspect gaining a spotlight inthe development of NPs-modified face masks or respirators. Herein, we discuss the relationship betweenthe addition of NPs with breathability of the material. In the beginning of discussion, types of protectiverespiratory equipments, and biocidal activities of the modified fabrics are discussed. Strategies in maintainingthe air permeability for long duration use and self-cleansing feature are also discussed.

Abstract

Despite many ratifications of international agreement on gender equality by Indonesia, the women still face many kinds of gender-based discrimination. In Aceh’s communities there found a resistance to gender equality due to the contradicting value with religion and culture. Education, in the other hand, could play an important role to reduce gender inequality, but should be incorporated with the changing in religion and culture. Aceh in history, was never out of stock producing women leaders (heroine), most prominently Ratu Safiatudin, Laksamana Malahayati, and Cut Nyak Dien. Aceh heroine narrative was found to be a potential tool to tackle inequality among men and women. This study suggests three major findings regarding the exposure: 1) There was a lacking of integrated gender equality education in the narratives, 2) The cognitive dissonance occurrence and 3) The exposure motivated boys to be more competitive against girls. Overall, the exposure of Aceh heroine narratives gave positive effect for boys to increase their competitiveness and acknowledge women’s capabilities, meanwhile for girls they became inspired in pursuing their dreams and even to lead.

Abstract

The use of the notorious synthetic dye, rhodamine B, in food and beverage products has been widely reported. This application urges the need to develop an analytical method that can provide reliable rhodamine B data with an easy operational technique. Therefore, this research is aimed to develop an Arduino Uno-based TCS3200 color sensor and study its application to determine rhodamine B levels in syrup. The design of the analytical instrument included TCS3200, an Arduino Uno microcomputer, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) software, a black box container, and a 24 × 2 matrix display screen, where samples were prepared via absorption using wool thread. With a linear range of 1–20 mg/L, our proposed colorimetric sensor had recoveries of 96.25–110.3%, which was better compared to that was obtained from the UV-vis (81.8–100.6%) method. The detection and quantification limits of the sensor were 2.766 and 8.383 mg/L, respectively. The syrup samples used in this study were purchased from the local stores in Banda Aceh. Based on the proposed TCS3200 color sensor, the highest rhodamine B concentration from the syrup sample was 16.74 mg/L. The t-test analysis in this study revealed that the Rhodamine B levels quantified using the newly developed TCS3200 color sensor were not statistically or significantly different from the UV-Vis spectrophotometer method.

Abstract

The emergence of acute, severe non hepA–E hepatitis of unknown etiology (ASHUE) has attracted global concern owing to the very young age of the patients and its unknown etiology. Although this condition has been linked to several possible causes, including viral infection, drugs and/or toxin exposure, the exact cause remains unknown; this makes treatment recommendation very difficult. In this review, we summarize recent updates on the clinical manifestations, complemented with laboratory results, case numbers with the global distribution and other epidemiological characteristics, and the possible etiologies. We also provide the proposed actions that could be undertaken to control and prevent further spread of this hepatitis. Since many etiological and pathological aspects of the acute non hepA–E hepatitis remain unclear, further research is needed to minimize the severe impact of this disease.

Abstract

Being archipelagic in geography and heterogenous in population contributes to the challenging comprehensive cancer surveillance in Indonesia. This present study analyzed the scientific publications on cancer epidemiology in Indonesia through bibliometric analysis aiming to complement the national survey data. The bibliometric data were retrieved from Scopus database on 9 May 2023 with pre-designed keyword combinations implying ‘cancer epidemiology in Indonesia’. The data were further presented in a table, distribution map, and visualized co-occurrence network. The visualization of co-occurring keywords was performed on VosViewer, and further analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. We retrieved 1075 scientific records constituted of original articles (n=888, 82.6%), conference papers (n=102, 9.48%), and review articles (n=40, 3.72%) among others. The contributing affiliations are concentrated in Java Island, with Jakarta (n=603) as the province with the most publications. ‘Breast cancer’ (n=91) and ‘cervical cancer’ (n=39) emerged as the most frequently occurring keywords, and are assigned as the centers of research cluster, respectively. Keyword ‘breast cancer’ (total link strength, TLS=86) is connected with ‘colorectal cancer’, ‘metastasis’, ‘ovarian cancer’, and ‘prostate cancer’. Meanwhile, keyword ‘cervical cancer’ (TLS=35) is connected with ‘human papilloma virus’ and ‘knowledge’. The results are in line with the current epidemiological data of Indonesia, and they can provide different insights, especially on the research trend. Research and policy recommendations are presented in the last parts of this article.

Abstract

The high price of beef and its processed products has led to many cases of adulteration with pork, resulting in issues related to halal food assurance. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct identification and analysis of the types of meat used in order to maintain food halalness. One of the methods currently advancing in the identification and analysis of meat types is Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). The aim of this study is to determine the capability of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) in identifying and analyzing various types of meat. The study results indicate that the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) method is capable of identifying and analyzing meat types with simple sample preparation and accurate outcomes compared to other methods such as Real Time-PCR, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Electronic Nose System, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) method can be combined with various chemometric methods such as PCA, PLS, and MSC. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) can identify and analyze various types of meat with an accuracy of up to 100% in shrimp and clams mixed sample. In conclusion, the combination of LIBS and chemometric methods demonstrates promising results in identifying and analyzing meat types.

Abstract

Inability to understand the pathogenesis of severe dengue, in particular the control mechanism of immune responses, has led to high mortality rate for patients with dengue shock syndrome (DSS). The aim of this study was to determine the control mechanism of cytokine production by mediator suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS), toll-like receptor 3 (TLR-3) and nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) during DENV infection. Peripheral blood mononuclear blood cells (PBMC), isolated from healthy individuals, were infected with dengue virus (DENV)-2 strain SJN-006 Cosmopolitan genotype (isolated from Bali, Indonesia). The relative gene expression of SOCS-3, TLR-3, NFκB, and the cytokine genes (interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, interferon inducible protein 10 (IP-10), and macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta (MIP-1β)) were measured using qRT-PCR at 6, 12 and 24 hours post infection (hpi). Student t-test and Mann-Whitney test were used to compare the gene expressions while causal correlations were analyzed using regression test and path analyses. DENV-2 infection increased the gene expression of SOCS-3, TLR-3, and NFκB after 12 and 24 hpi. The expression of IL-6, IL-8, IP-10, and MIP-1β genes was increased and peaked at different times post-infection. NFκB and SOCS-3 genes likely have role in the upregulation of IL-8 and IL-6 gene expression, respectively. MIP-1β gene expression was significantly induced by both NFκB and SOCS-3. In conclusion, our study suggested that SOCS-3, TLR-3, and NFκB are important in regulating the production of IL-6, IL-8, IP-10, MIP-1β during early phase of DENV-2 infection. This enriches our understanding on pathogenesis pathway of DENV-associated cytokine storm.

Abstract

The aging population warrants the increase of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) prevalence, a condition that could progress to dementia. Efforts have been made to improve the MCI and prevent its progression, including the introduction of Tai Chi, a Chinese traditional exercise. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy of Tai Chi in attenuating MCI among the elderly population. Records investigating the effect of Tai Chi exercise intervention on cognitive function among elderly patients were searched systematically from PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Europe PMC as of April 13, 2023. The risk of bias (RoB 2.0) quality assessment was employed in the quality appraisal of the studies included. Review Manager 5.4.1 was used for data extraction and meta-analysis, where the standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were computed. Eight randomized control trials with a total of 1379 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Six trials assessed Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores, where its pooled analysis suggested that Tai Chi was as effective as conventional exercise (SMD=0.15, 95%CI: -0.11 to 0.40, p=0.26). However, pooled analysis of the Mini-Mental Status Examination suggested that Tai Chi intervention more effectively improved cognitive function and reduced the rate of cognitive impairment in elderly patients (SMD=0.36, 95%CI: 0.18 to 0.54, p<0.01) as compared to the control group. This systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that, in some extent, Tai Chi is efficacious in improving cognitive function and slowing down the rate of cognitive impairment among elderly patients.

Abstract

Controversy persists regarding the effectiveness of ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (US-FNAB) in distinguishing malignancies in large thyroid nodules. The prevailing belief that larger thyroid nodules inherently pose a higher risk of malignancy has led to a common practice of suggesting thyroidectomy for large thyroid nodules. Herein, the aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of preoperative US-FNAB for distinguishing malignancy in large thyroid nodules. A search for published records was carried out on 20 October 2023, utilizing the search feature available on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar. Patients with large thyroid nodules (3 cm or larger) who underwent preoperative US-FNAB and postoperative histopathological tests were included. Related outcomes, including false positive (FP), false negative (FN), true negative (TN), true positive (TP), specificity, and sensitivity, were extracted from each study. Pooled specificity and sensitivity were estimated, and the summarized receiver operating characteristic (sROC) curve, along with the summarized area under the curve (sAUC), was calculated. Out of 133 articles identified across four databases, 10 studies with a total sample of 2752 patients were included. The overall diagnostic sensitivity was 72% (95%CI: 50–86%; p=0.00) and specificity was 96% (95%CI: 87–90%; p=0.00). The positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were 93% (95%CI: 89–98%) and 75% (95%CI: 72–79%), respectively. sAUC was 93%, suggesting the diagnostic tool is accurate. Meta-regression analysis revealed that factors such as the number of samples, country (high-income vs upper-middle income), demographic characteristics (age and gender), and different thyroid size cut-off values did not significantly impact the sensitivity or specificity of US-FNAB. In conclusion, the present study confirms the reliability of US-FNAB in distinguishing malignancy in large thyroid nodules, emphasizing its role in reducing unnecessary thyroidectomy by identifying high-risk patients and challenging the conventional practice of routine thyroidectomy for large thyroid nodules.
