Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of the Sumatera Thawalib educational institution in the development of Islamic education in the Minangkabau region. Sumatera Thawalib was one of the significant Islamic educational organizations that played a crucial role in the dissemination and renewal of Islamic teachings as well as in shaping the character of the Minangkabau community in the early 20th century. Using a qualitative historical approach, this research collects data from various primary and secondary sources, such as archival documents, historical literature, and interviews with educational figures and local historians. The results show that Sumatera Thawalib made a significant contribution in creating a progressive and modern Islamic education system in Minangkabau. This institution not only emphasized the teaching of classical religious knowledge but also integrated general knowledge and character education in accordance with the social and cultural context of Minangkabau. Additionally, Sumatera Thawalib served as a forum for the emergence of Islamic scholars and intellectuals who played a role in renewing Islamic thought and strengthening the community’s Islamic identity. The role of Sumatera Thawalib is also evident in strengthening the network of Islamic education connecting various pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) and madrasahs in West Sumatra and surrounding areas. With innovative teaching methods and a structured organization, this institution was able to respond to the challenges of modernization while preserving traditional Islamic values. Furthermore, Sumatera Thawalib contributed to the development of social and political awareness among the Minangkabau community, particularly in the context of the independence movement and educational reform. In conclusion, Sumatera Thawalib holds a strategic role as a pioneer and driving force of Islamic education in Minangkabau, combining tradition and modernity. These findings provide important insights into the dynamics of Islamic education in Indonesia and its relevance in the development of education based on religious values and local culture. This research is expected to serve as a reference for developing contextual and forward-looking Islamic education.

Abstract

This research investigates the historical and religious significance of Al-Habib Ali bin Abdurrahman Al-Habsyi Kwitang (1889–1968) in the context of Indonesia’s struggle for independence and the dissemination of Islamic teachings. The central question addresses how Habib Ali contributed to both the national movement and Islamic socio-religious development. Using the historical method, the study follows four stages: heuristic data collection, source criticism, interpretation, and historiographical synthesis. Findings indicate that Habib Ali played a critical role in advancing Islamic education by founding institutions such as Unwanul Falah and ICI, and was actively involved in religious-political organizations, notably the Majelis Islam A'la Indonesia (MIAI). His influence extended into national politics as a spiritual advisor to key leaders, including President Soekarno. The study concludes that Habib Ali’s legacy exemplifies the intertwined relationship between Islamic scholarship and nationalist discourse, reinforcing the prominent role of ulama in shaping Indonesia’s socio-political fabric and contributing to the broader intellectual tradition of Islam Nusantara.

Abstract

The Mbesur-mbesuri tradition represents a vital element of the cultural heritage of the Karo ethnic group, historically performed as a ritual of reverence and protection for pregnant women entering their seventh month of gestation. Rooted in deeply held spiritual, symbolic, and communal values, the practice is believed to ensure the well-being of both mother and child. This study investigates how the Mbesur-mbesuri tradition has evolved within the Karo community in Kutalimbaru District between 2000 and 2020. It seeks to understand the extent to which modernity has influenced ritual practices and meanings. Using a qualitative descriptive approach within the framework of symbolic anthropology, data were gathered through literature review and in-depth interviews with local elders and custodians of the tradition. The study reveals that although the ritual has undergone noticeable simplification—such as the reduction of traditional offerings and ceremonial components—it has concurrently witnessed a renewed emphasis on its spiritual dimension. These changes reflect adaptive strategies that maintain cultural relevance while preserving essential values. The research concludes that Mbesur-mbesuri remains a potent symbol of identity and social cohesion, adapting to modern contexts without losing its foundational significance.

Abstract

Islam adalah agama yang menghapus kebiasaan jahiliyah dan sangat menghargai perempuan Islam menganggap laki laki dan perempuan sebagai makhluk yang setara dan saling melengkapi .Desa Perlis kec.brandan barat kab langkat terletak di pesisir tepi sungai babalan dan mayoritas penduduknya berasal dari suku melayu.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana peran perempuan melayu lakukan dalam masyarakat desa perlis dalam Upaya memajukan berbagai aspek seperti ekonomi,budaya,pendidikan dan sosial.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pengumpulan data melalui wawancara observasi dan dokumentasi.Studi Pustaka juga dilakukan dalam penelitian ini melaui wawancara,artikel dan segala berkaitan dengan tujuan penelitian.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan peran perempuan melayu di desa perlis sangat di butuhkan terhadap masyarakat nya dimana peran perempuan melayu begitu kuat dalam masyarakat dalam bidang ekonomi,sosial.budaya dan pendidikan.

Abstract

Pesantren Sheikh Muhammad Dahlan Aek Hayuara, founded in 1938 by Sheikh Muhammad Dahlan Hasibuan, is recognized as the oldest Islamic boarding school in Padang Lawas district and the progenitor of all pesantren in Sibuhuan. This study explores the historical development and contributions of this pesantren to Islamic education and broader societal dimensions including economics, religion, social life, and the struggle for independence in Sibuhuan. Employing a qualitative research approach, data were gathered through interviews, field observations, and documentation, complemented by a literature review encompassing books, archival materials, institutional documents, and relevant scholarly sources. The findings reveal that the pesantren has played a pivotal role in shaping Islamic education in the region, having produced numerous Islamic scholars and community leaders across various sectors. Its existence not only laid the foundation for the emergence of other pesantren but also contributed significantly to the educational, religious, and sociocultural landscape of Padang Lawas. The pesantren's legacy continues to influence Islamic learning and community empowerment, confirming its status as a central institution in the historical and educational narrative of Sibuhuan.

Abstract

This study aims to examine historical values in Tasaro GK's novel Muhammad Man Holding Rain by using historical research and a qualitative approach. Data collection using analysis and interview techniques. The data analysis technique was carried out by reading the main research source, namely the historical novel Muhammad The Man Holding the Rain, then describing and drawing conclusions. The interview technique was carried out with the writer of the novel Muhammad Man Holding the Rain, namely Tasaro GK. The data in this study are in the form of excerpts from novels that contain historical elements. The results of this study indicate the existence of historical data in his authorship. The relevance of the use of literature and history can be found in several parts of this novel, by using fictional characters so that the storyline becomes dynamic. The implication of using the novel Muhammad's Man Holding the Rain in understanding sirah nabawiyah requires a deep interpretation of every event in the novel.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the form and architectural meaning of the traditional Malay house of Datuk Amar Sridiraja in Tanjung Pura, Langkat Regency. The house, which was built in 1827, is a cultural heritage that is still preserved today. The research method used is a historical approach with data collection techniques through direct observation, interviews with residents of the house, and literature studies. The results showed that Datuk Amar Sridiraja's house has Malay architectural characteristics that are reflected in elements such as stairs, doors, windows, poles, floors, ornaments, and roofs. Each of these elements has a symbolic meaning in Malay culture. The house's dominant yellow and green colors also have special meanings, symbolizing glory, majesty, and Islamic values. Although it has undergone several renovations, the house still retains the essence of traditional Malay architecture.

Abstract

Pelabuhan Belawan, Sebagai Salah Satu Pelabuhan Terbesar Di Indonesia, Memiliki Peran Yang Penting Dalam Perdagangan Internasional, Khususnya Dengan Negara-Negara Barat. Penelitian Ini Bertujuan Untuk Menginvestigasi Pengaruh Perdagangan Barat Terhadap Perkembangan Ekonomi Di Pelabuhan Belawan. Metode Yang Digunakan Adalah Analisis Data Historis Dan Penelusuran Literatur Yang Relevan Untuk Memahami Dinamika Perdagangan Dan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi Di Wilayah Tersebut. Temuan Utama Menunjukkan Bahwa Perdagangan Dengan Negara-Negara Barat Telah Memberikan Kontribusi Signifikan Terhadap Perkembangan Ekonomi Di Pelabuhan Belawan, Dengan Meningkatnya Arus Barang Dan Investasi Yang Masuk. Perdagangan Ini Juga Telah Membawa Perubahan Dalam Struktur Ekonomi Lokal, Mempengaruhi Sektor-Sektor Seperti Industri, Transportasi, Dan Jasa. Implikasi Dari Penelitian Ini Menyoroti Pentingnya Hubungan Perdagangan Dengan Negara-Negara Barat Dalam Mendukung Pertumbuhan Ekonomi Regional Dan Menawarkan Pandangan Yang Berharga Bagi Kebijakan Pembangunan Ekonomi Di Masa Depan.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country of cultural diversity from Sabang to Merauke. The role of libraries has great significance as an effort to preserve and maintain these cultural values. Libraries as information centers also have a function as cultural preservation. However, besides that we need to explore what role the library plays in preserving local culture. This research aims to find out how the role of libraries in preserving local culture. This research uses qualitative methods with direct observation and interviews with librarians. Libraries have a very important role in preserving local culture in Pakpak Bharat Regency. Pakpak people in general also have a greeting pattern or pertuturen where someone will call their relatives with a distinctive and polite greeting and have a function for each term of greeting. Through its programs, the library is able to become an effective agent in documenting, promoting, and introducing cultural heritage to the community.

Abstract

The main focus of this research problem is the process of discovering a kingdom that once existed in Kampung Raja by analyzing and reconstructing the remains of that kingdom. This kingdom is called the Kampung Raja Kingdom which is located in Tanjung Medan Village, Kampung Rakyat District. This article aims to find out the process of the founding of the Kampung Raja Kingdom, the kings who led the Kampung Raja Kingdom, then the economic, social and political systems, as well as factors in the destruction of the Kampung Raja Kingdom. This research was also carried out for the reason of providing information that there was a kingdom that once existed and existed and had a history and heritage that was worthy of being revealed and its existence known. The type of method used in this research process is the historical research method. Meanwhile, for the approach, the author uses two approaches, namely an archaeological approach and a descriptive qualitative approach. In searching for data, this research uses data collection techniques which consist of three types, namely observation, interviews and documentation. The results obtained from this research are that the Kampung Raja Kingdom was an ethnic Malay kingdom that was founded around 1692 with the first capital in Tanjung Mulia, and experienced a move to Tanjung Medan. The Kampung Raja Kingdom has a royal leadership lineage of five kings. The five kings were Sutan Tua, Sutan Muda, Tengku Sutan Bachludin, Tengku Achmad Putera, and Tengku Nong Hamzah. The Kampung Raja kingdom was destroyed when the social revolution occurred in 1946 in East Sumatra.
