Abstract

The use of implicit performative utterances can be found in some announcements at Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) in Bandung, Indonesia and at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) in Philadelphia, U. S. A. In linguistics, there is a form of speech known as performative utterances (Austin, 1962). The word comes from the verb ‘perform’ and refers to the noun ‘action’; it is said that the word refers to a speech for performance or action. Performatives cannot be regarded as right or wrong statements, but refer to appropriate or inappropriate, legitimate or illegitimate actions. Implicit performatives are performative utterances with performative verbs but they are not explicitly stated. With an implicit performative, the sentence does not have an explicit performative verb, but it has illocutionary force which is known from the context. Knowing the context, the hearer assumes the performative verb that appears. The use of this kind of utterances in notices at Unpad and at UPenn is quite different. This paper examines the differences and the similarities between the announcements at Unpad and at UPenn which use implicit performative utterances.

Abstract

This descriptive research discusses the use of discourse markers in a diplomatic setting between the governments of Indonesia and Australia during a Joint Press Conference between Indonesia-Australia Foreign and Defence Ministers. The particular aims of this research are to identify and analyze forms of discourse markers employed by the representatives of each government and describe the most frequent discourse markers used by these representatives. The data were collected from the transcript of the Joint Press Conference between Indonesia and Australia Foreign and Defence Ministers (2+2) Dialogue. The data are classified based on the typology of discourse markers and analyzed to identify their function within the diplomatic discourse. The data are input into the AntConc corpus analysis toolkit for analysis. The results show that the Foreign and Defence Ministers of Indonesia employed three forms of discourse markers, namely textual discourse marker, interpersonal discourse marker, and cognitive discourse marker, whereas the Foreign and Defence Ministers of Australia only applied textual discourse marker and cognitive discourse marker. Both representatives employed textual discourse markers more frequently than other forms of discourse markers. Discourse markers partially control how meaning is constructed by showing turns between speakers, joining concepts, displaying attitude, and finally, controlling communication. By understanding the discourse markers in ministerial dialogues, spectators can learn to find clues in the change of direction in their talks to better understand the conversation that affects the policies and citizens of both countries involved.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the memes created by Nurhadi-Aldo, a fictional presidential candidate. Data is collected from Nurhadi-Aldo’s Instagram profile. The descriptive qualitative approach was used and the sampling procedure carried out was purposive sampling. To analyze the data and to uncover the hidden values, the three-dimension analysis proposed by Fairclough (2001) was used. The first dimension was textual analysis where the textual and visual sign of the presidential memes were examined. The second dimension was the analysis of the discursive practice surrounding the production of Nurhadi-Aldo memes. And the last was the sociocultural practice analysis that deals with how Indonesian internet users reacted to this viral phenomenon. The result points out that the memes represent the visualization of public social critics toward a political condition in Indonesia. With regards to the content creator, Nurhadi-Aldo’s memes further indicate the scepticism value of Indonesian youth. These findings further confirm that the function of the meme is not limited to entertainment purpose only, but also to deliver political criticism. Hence, it is expected that the findings will give more insights into how certain values can be delivered through the use of everyday text, such as memes.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the speeches of Donald Trump and of Hillary Clinton in the USA Presidential candidates’ debates as instruments of power. The data is a presidential final debate video of Trump and Clinton made in September 2016 which has been converted into a transcript. The data analyzing technique is divided into three steps: 1) describing the context, 2) analyzing the illocutionary acts, and 3) analyzing the power dimensions. The results of this research show that the speakers use the speech act as an instrument of power with classifications of representative, commissive and expressive. In this regard, the researchers found that the speakers demonstrated their power to try to convince the voters in their society to trust them to be the president. The research results also showed that the usage of speech in debate as an instrument of power can influence the voters especially on Election Day.

Abstract

Google Translate is widely used among students for translation purposes, but its Arabic-Indonesian translations often require significant re-editing due to issues with accuracy and quality. These limitations highlight the need for improved translation learning methods to enhance the quality of Arabic-Indonesian translations. This study aims to analyze the types of errors found in Arabic-Indonesian machine translation and introduce the Ngalodern method, rooted in Indonesian local wisdom, to improve translation quality. A descriptive analysis method was employed, combining eclectic theories to achieve the study’s objectives. The research was conducted in three stages; first, data collection through questionnaires and interviews; second, data analysis using the translational equivalent method to identify accurate meanings and the distributional method to describe grammatical errors; and third presenting the data in tables showing the percentage of translation errors in Islamic studies texts. The Ngalodern method was described in a descriptive framework. The study identified translation errors at the levels of morphemes, words, phrases, and clauses. Additionally, Ngalodern learning, based on Sundanese cultural wisdom and critical literacy, was developed as a teaching strategy for Arabic-Indonesian translation improvement in educational contexts. The findings demonstrate that Ngalodern learning significantly enhances students’ ability to edit and improve Arabic-Indonesian machine translation results. This method offers a culturally relevant and effective approach to developing translation skills.

Abstract

Entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) is quite essential for starting a business. Many MSIB participants are interning at companies, which concerns the UNPAD Career Development Center regarding students' ESE. The study was conducted using a survey method: distributing a Google Forms questionnaire to the interns. The online process was used considering the location of the participants, who were spread out because they were undergoing an internship. The survey results showed that most students had relatively high ESE scores. The analysis of the difference test showed no significant difference in the scientific cluster and parental background, but the Science and Technology and Agrocomplex clusters had the highest average interest. Students with parents who work as entrepreneurs also have a higher level of confidence than students with parents who work as civil servants or private employees, BUMN and BUMD. Students' interest in entrepreneurship and ESE also show a significant relationship so that self-confidence will impact their interest in entrepreneurship, and they are expected to survive and develop. Parents' jobs and asking students to influence students' confidence in entrepreneurship. In addition, the Science and Technology and Agrocomplex clusters showed higher self-confidence in entrepreneurship. This study suggests providing entrepreneurial containers/opportunities for students to improve their entrepreneurial skills. In addition, a mentoring program is also needed to help students survive in their businesses and develop them into bigger businesses.
