Abstract

Communication gap because of linguistic difference and unavailability of specific learning materials become a problem of foreign workers working in Indonesia. A specific research that develops IFL learning materials to overcome these problems is needed. This study aims to develop and improve the quality of available IFL materials. Methodology used here is Research and Development, combining quantitative-qualitative approaches. The result of this study is: 1) M E D I A as a new framework learning materials with humanistic approach that presents multicultural domestic foreign workers’ characters bound by a shared narrative on linguistic problems within business communication realm; and 2) M E D I A as mnemonic technique to embody those multicultural characters and values into teaching materials’ books namely BIPA Business Communication. High-scoring of colleagues’ evaluation and experts’ validation confirms that the IFL is highly recommended to use. Having been implemented in large-scale class through Indonesian Proficiency Test (IPT), current study achieves effectively testing result which shows that this model of IFL learning materials is effective to use because it helps to improve the language skill of students.

Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze translation strategies in the Quran. The content analysis method with the qualitative approach used in the research. The data in this study are words, phrases, sentences in the text of the translation of the ayahs of the Glorious Qur'an surah Albaqarah ayah 1 to ayah 286. The procedure applied in the analysis of the data is the inductive model procedure. The development model of the rhetorical strategies used by Toulmin model. The results showed the model development strategies IV (G.W. B àC). The other model used the alternative model. It is another model appeared aside from what Toulmin has given, W. B àC. Model W. B àC is used as much as 7 times or of 17.5%. The next strategy model that also is a widely used is alternative models W.B. Q àC and the model V is used 5 times (12.5%). Next is the model of strategy III (Ground + Warrant àClaim), used four times or by 10% and the model I (Ground àClaim), model II (Ground-n àn-Claim), model W àC, and model W. R àC each used 1 time or amounting to 2.5%. All of the claims are expressed using complex rhetorical strategies. A claim supported by more than one fact either parallel or not parallel. There are few facts and data (ground), reinforced with a justification or validation data (warrant), reinforced again with power support (backing support) to strengthen one or more than one claim.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explain the use of the DRTA method and the level of critical thinking in improving students' ability in editing scientific articles. The method used in this research is experimental research. The result shows that using the DRTA method affected the ability to edit scientific articles if it is in accordance to the students’ level of critical thinking (high and low). Learning outcomes of editing scientific articles of students who have high critical thinking scales are different from learning outcomes of editing scientific articles of students who have low level of critical thinking. Students who were treated with the DRTA Method had higher level of critical thinking and had significant differences from those who had low levels of critical thinking. The acquisition of the average score showed the students who studied with the DRTA method and had a high critical thinking level are 90.1, while the score of the students who had a low critical thinking level are 79.3.

Abstract

This research aimed to show how the social contexts influencing the main character of The Bluest Eye, Pecols’s identity development, and the stage of her identity development with the help of Erikson and Marcia’s theories. The research used qualitative research through the literary psychology approach. The data collection had been taken from the novel entitled The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, selected and sorted to find out how many among them were supporting the research. The steps were data analysis and data validity. The results show that social contexts greatly affected Pecola’s life, and therefore her identity cannot be developed.; racism, thus, has an influence on all aspects of the black people. Pecola undergoes multiple oppression and abuse as a result of racism, which leads to her self-loathe. She, thus, believes that having blue eyes is the only hope to escape from the suffering she undergoes. It is a warning of identity confusion since she wants to change her identity and becomes white. It pushes her to insanity. Racism and abuse ruin a person’s life by creating hatred and damaged to a person’s soul, and segregate society into groups. It results in the division of groups through the use of terms such as ‘them’ and ‘us’, implying that they are not equal.

Abstract

This study aims to scrutinize the utilization both of visual and written language toward the billboard of legislative candidates in the general election 2019. The sources of the data are 2 billboards from 9 parties winning the general election 2019 in Indonesia and the data that has been taken by the researchers are slogans and photos which have been deployed on the billboards. This qualitative research uses the method of descriptive analysis. On billboard 1 (Golkar), the dominance of the persuasive discourse is a wise clause which has been deployed to build a good reputation about legislative candidates. Meanwhile on billboard 2 (PKS), the dominance is the invitation which indicated that the legislative candidates directly invited the people to choose them. Through the visual and written language, the legislative candidates showed their identities strongly. Briefly, these billboards which showed in this research contained the strong persuasive language which combined both of written and visual languages. Keywords: Language, Persuasive, Visual, Parties

Abstract

This research traces the relationship between a character's existence, ecological insight, and cultural values ​​in folklore. Whether it is recognized or not, in Indonesia, folklore has the power to explore nature. To achieve that goal, this research approach is qualitative that is supported by a content analysis method. The source of research data is Timun Mas Folklore. The study of literary perspective (environment) in eco-criticism can construct the wisdom of the environment itself and the study of environmental literature perspective, can be focused on ethical studies (1) respect for nature, (2) responsibility for nature, (3) solidarity towards nature, (4) affection and care for nature, and (5) attitudes not to disturb the natural life displayed in literary works. Through this study, there are several findings obtained that are water environment pollution, habitat destruction, and management of nature or the environment.

Abstract

AbstractNowadays, English is the most important language, including the students who study in STKIP Situs Banten. To be fluent in English students have to increase their ability in writing the paragraph. The Researcher used a flipped classroom learning model since the Covid-19 Pandemic struck Indonesia and the classroom meeting cannot be assessed. This model incorporates dynamic learning; understudy inclusion and present-day innovation by utilizing ICT. In a flipped classroom, the material was given through learning recordings, instructional exercise,s and PowerPoint material by means of WhatsApp group that understudies saw in their homes before the virtual class is acquired. The key objective of this investigation is to explore the practicality of the flipped classroom learning model for teaching paragraph writing. The analyst took the examples from second-semester students in the English instruction division of STKIP Situs Banten. After this activity research measure has been done, this flipped examination lobby learning model can be utilized as a reasonable model for growing understudies limit in section composing. The researcher had dissected that there are a few reasons which drive this occurred: understudy's inspiration, understudy's Writing propensities, students autonomously, and varieties of alluring material. Abstract

This study aims to describe the needs of the Han script contextual learning model for SMA/SMK/MA Chinese Language teachers in Mandarin teacher training conducted by PPPPTK Language. This research uses the ADDIE model development approach, with steps to review the literature, provide instruments to 35 Mandarin teachers, and interview with peers. The data obtained analyzed as the main material in developing teaching materials in the learning model. Data analysis of this research is quantitative. The needs analysis shows that from 35 teachers, there are 50 % bachelor, 33 % diploma, and 17 % masters. Meanwhile, there are 61 % of teachers who have a background in Chinese language and literature, 6 % have a Mandarin education, and the rest other than Mandarin. Besides, 27 teachers claim that online learning is suitable for teachers because they are not bound by distance and time, 35 teachers state that is a need for learning model that combines the concepts of knowledge and experience, and 33 teachers also claim that contextual learning models are suitable for use in Han script material. Furthermore, there are 23 teachers stated that the origin of Han script is important, 24 people stated that the structure and components of Han script are important to be mastered, 25 people stated that the formation of words from the Han script and writing rules according to standards became the standard of competence required to be mastered by Mandarin teachers, and 17 people answered the importance of culture in learning Han script.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain an overall view of culture translation and the strategies applied in translating those terms. This study used a qualitative approach using a content analysis method. The date used in this study is dialogues about culture translation and translation strategies. The researchers used Peter Newmark Theory to analyzed the culture translatoin, and used Mona Baker theory to analyzed the strategies. The results of the study showed, there are 147 data, 43 data belonged to the category of materials, 13 data belonged to the category of socials, 28 data belonged to the category of organization, tradition, activities, and religion, 51 data belonged to the category of ecology, and 12 data belonged to the category of body movements and habits. Meanwhile, there are 5 from 8 translation strategies that used by translator based on Baker theory. 43 data used translation by a more general word, 38 data used more nuetral/less expressive word, 3 data used cultural substitution, 47 data used a loan word plu explanation, and 7 data  translation by omission.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji secara mendalam mengenai pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama dalam tuturan diskusi kelas Bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dengan metode analisis isi. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik rekam dan catat. Kemudian menemukan pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama dalam tuturan diskusi kelas bahasa Indonesia dan dianalisis sesuai teori yang ada. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan: (1) pelanggaran maksim kuantitas sebanyak 7 tuturan (16%), (2) pelanggaran maksim kualitas sebanyak 5 tuturan (12%), (3) pelanggaran maksim relasi sebanyak 17 tuturan (39%), dan (4) pelanggaran maksim cara sebanyak 14 tuturan (33%). Tuturan-tuturan dalam diskusi kelas bahasa Indonesia yang melanggar prinsip kerja sama ini menjadikan tidak terjalinnya komunikasi yang baik sehingga diskusi yang terjadi kurang efektif. Hal ini dipicu karena beberapa hal seperti adanya rasa kurang percaya diri dari penutur atau lawan tutur, ingin menunjukan kelucuan yang membuat suasana diskusi menjadi tidak monoton, kurang paham dan tidak tuntasnya di dalam memberikan tanggapan saat berdiskusi.
