Abstract

This study aimed to describe the mental health of the elderly before and after the COVID-19 outbreak using a qualitative approach. Ten elderly people volunteered to participate in offline semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed using the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) technique. The results of our study mentioned the differences in the mental health of the elderly during the COVID-19 outbreak and after the COVID-19 outbreak. The elderly felt the difference in emotional terms, such as being more relieved and happier because activities returned to normal. The elderly feel calmer when using religion as religious coping to overcome psychological problems that arise during the COVID-19 outbreak. During the COVID-19 outbreak, elderly people still working also feel the impact on the family's economy, which compounds the problem. Excessive coverage on social media also helped make the elderly more afraid of COVID-19. The study's results can help improve older people's mental health after COVID-19 by understanding their experiences and finding good ways to cope. It suggests that future research should look at specific ways to support older people's mental health, taking into account their special challenges and the role of social media in causing fear and worry about COVID-19.

Abstract

Recently, the role of spirituality in the workplace has gained notable interest. This paper explores how career commitment mediates the impact of Islamic workplace spirituality dimensions (taqarrub, muraqabah, and istiqamah) on subjective career success among Muslim teachers in Indonesia. This study tested hypotheses using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) on data from 200 respondents (38 male, 162 female) gathered through accidental sampling. The instruments used include the Commitment Career Measure (CCM) to assess career commitment (α = 0.857–0.904), Islamic Workplace Spirituality (IWS) to measure spirituality (α = 0.822–0.836), and the Subjective Career Success Inventory (SCSI) to measure career success (α = 0.891–0.911). All instruments showed good convergent validity (AVE > 0.50) and discriminant validity (Fornell-Larcker and HTMT criteria). The results indicate that career commitment plays a mediating role between Islamic workplace spirituality, particularly istiqamah and taqarub, and subjective career success. Career commitment has a significant positive impact on career success. Both istiqamah and taqarub positively influence career commitment, which in turn enhances career success. However, muraaqabah does not significantly affect career commitment or career success. The indirect influences of istiqamah and taqarub through career commitment are also significant, while muraaqabah's indirect effect is not. The study indicates that Islamic spiritual practices in the workplace can increase commitment and success among Muslim educators. Supporting these practices can help teachers perform better and feel more satisfied with their careers. This is crucial for educational leaders and policymakers to create better school environments.

Abstract

Marriage is a union between two individuals who rely on each other, provide mutual support, and build a shared life. Self-adjustment and emotional intelligence are essential factors in fostering marital harmony. Married couples with a high level of self-adjustment and emotional intelligence tend to evaluate various situations in their marital life more positively. This study employs a descriptive correlational method with 170 respondents selected through accidental sampling. The instruments used include the Emotional Intelligence Scale and the Self-Adjustment Scale. Data analysis was conducted using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation technique. The results indicate a positive and significant relationship between emotional intelligence and self-adjustment in married individuals in early adulthood (r = 0.262, p = 0.001; p < 0.05). Based on these findings, it is recommended that married couples enhance their emotional intelligence through emotional management training and communication skills development to improve self-adjustment in marriage. Additionally, psychological intervention programs focusing on strengthening adaptation skills in marital life can help couples navigate marital challenges more effectively.

Abstract

Abstract

This research focuses on investigating the influence of parent and peer attachment on the growth mindset of students enrolled in Private Vocational High Schools in Purwokerto, Indonesia. Stratified proportional random sampling was employed to select participants for this study. Consent was obtained from 235 students who participated. The gender distribution was skewed toward females (57.9%) compared to males (42.1%), with the majority of participants being 16 years old (46.7%). The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) was used to measure parent and peer attachment, while the Growth Mindset Scale was employed to assess participants' growth-oriented attitudes. A linear regression analysis was utilized to examine the predictive relationship between mother, father, and peer attachment and growth mindset scores. The results demonstrated significant gender-based variations across the variables studied. Notably, females exhibited significantly higher Mother Attachment scores, indicating a stronger attachment to their mothers. Nonetheless, no considerable gender disparities emerged in Father Attachment scores. Although the distinction in Peer Attachment scores was close to significance (p = 0.053), females displayed slightly higher attachment to peers. A marked gender discrepancy was identified in Growth Mindset scores, with females displaying a notably more positive perspective toward growth and learning opportunities. Furthermore, predictive modeling revealed that Mother Attachment exerted a significant positive impact on Growth Mindset scores (β = 0.3), implying that a stronger attachment to mothers corresponded to a more favorable growth-oriented mindset. Similarly, Father Attachment positively contributed to Growth Mindset scores (β = 0.25). Additionally, Peer Attachment demonstrated a modest yet positive association (β = 0.13). The calculated R² values indicated that both Mother Attachment and Father Attachment collectively accounted for approximately 18% of the variance in Growth Mindset scores, while Peer Attachment contributed to a smaller extent (1%). Collectively, these findings shed light on the intricate relationships between attachment, age, and mindset. They underscore the roles of different attachments in shaping individuals' growth-oriented perspectives and highlight the nuanced gender differences in attachment and mindset. This study provides valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers aiming to promote positive growth mindsets among students.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of problem-focused coping and emotional-focused coping on the psychological well-being of teachers during the pandemic. The pandemic created new stressors for teachers who were required to rapidly adapt to online learning technologies while maintaining the quality of instruction and student engagement. Using a quantitative correlational design, the study involved 119 teachers from Muhammadiyah Vocational High Schools (SMK) in Banyumas Regency, selected through simple random sampling from a population of 217 teachers. Three validated instruments were used: the Psychological Well-Being Scale (α = 0.873), Problem-Focused Coping Scale (α = 0.908), and Emotional-Focused Coping Scale (α = 0.865). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results revealed that both problem-focused coping (t = 6.789, p 0.05) and emotional-focused coping (t = 8.964, p 0.05) significantly affected psychological well-being. Simultaneous analysis also confirmed a significant combined influence of the two coping strategies (F = 50.889, p 0.05) with an adjusted R² of 0.458, indicating that 45.8% of the variance in psychological well-being was explained by coping mechanisms. The findings suggest that teachers who apply effective problem-solving strategies and emotional regulation are more capable of maintaining positive mental states, reducing stress, and achieving psychological resilience in their professional duties. The study highlights the importance of fostering adaptive coping strategies through training and institutional support to enhance teachers’ mental health and overall performance in challenging educational contexts.
