Abstract

Kata kunci: binge eating, pola asuh orang tua, regulasi emosi, remaja Emotion Regulation Strategies and Parental Parenting Styles Underlying Binge Eating Behavior in Adolescents ABSTRACTResearch on binge eating behavior remains scarce in Indonesia. Binge eating, a form of excessive eating behavior, represents a major mental disorder among adolescents, particularly those aged 15-19 years. Objective: To explore the correlation between emotion regulation strategies and parental parenting styles with binge eating behavior among adolescents aged 15-19 years in Jakarta Special Capital Region. Methods: This research employed a quantitative observational analytic design with a cross-sectional research design and utilized non-parametric statistical tests, namely the chi-square test. The sample comprised 388 adolescents who met the inclusion criteria and were obtained through cluster sampling probability sampling technique. Consistent with the variables involved, the instruments utilized included respondent characteristic instruments, Binge Eating Scale (BES), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ). Results: Findings revealed that 11% of the 388 adolescents exhibited severe binge eating behavior. Employing the chi-square test, the research demonstrated a significant correlation between emotion regulation strategies and binge eating behavior (p-value=0.001; α=0.05) as well as between parental parenting styles and binge eating behavior (p-value=0.001; α=0.05). Discussion: The formation of adaptive emotion regulation strategies coupled with authoritative parental parenting styles may foster healthy eating behavior among adolescents. Conclusion: Implementation of educational programs concerning adaptive emotion regulation strategies for adolescents and appropriate parenting education tailored to adolescent characteristics for parents may aid in reducing the risk of binge eating behavior. Keywords: Binge eating, parental parenting styles, emotion regulation, adolescents

Abstract

Mothers, as the primary caregivers are most likely affected when children are exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic. A few studies in Eastern countries, particularly in Indonesia, explored how mothers were affected by their children’s hospitalization due to COVID-19. Indonesia and most eastern countries applied collectivism, which is essential for togetherness. This study aimed to identify mothers’ experiences caring for children diagnosed with COVID-19. A phenomenological approach was used, and the data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 mothers recruited using a purposive sampling technique. Thematic analysis was performed to analyze the data by compiling mothers’ experiences caring for children diagnosed with COVID-19 at home and in hospitals. Five themes were revealed: (1) feeling guilty when the child was confirmed positive for COVID-19, (2) feeling worried about the health of the child but thinking positively and becoming stronger, (3) feeling grateful to be able to do the isolation together with the child, (4) making an effort to help the child become cured of COVID-19 and (5) feeling relieved when their children had relatively mild symptoms during isolation. Mothers faced psychological problems including feeling guilty about their child’s condition, but then happy when they were hospitalized and recovering together.

Abstract

Background: Premature birth is still a crucial problem for children worldwide. In Indonesia, the 5th highest preterm birth rate country, there have been many studies conducted on the success of treating premature babies but more often research on an intervention to address a specific problem faced by premature infants and their families. Rarely, the research examines qualitatively how health workers, including nurses, take careful measures to address all the health problems of premature babies at the same time until they are successful in caring for premature babies.Purpose: This study aims to dig deeper into the success of Indonesian nurses in caring for premature babies. Methods: This research is a qualitative descriptive study using focus group discussions (FGD) to obtain data from 17 nurses in the nursery who have experience caring for premature babies. Data from the two FGD groups were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Four themes were obtained which described the success of nurses in caring for premature babies, namely (1) the various feelings of nurses when caring for premature babies (2) the attitude of nurses to work (3) the support of nurses to families (4) the work output of nurses. Conclusion: Success in caring for premature babies from a nurse's perspective is successful in returning the baby to a healthy condition and staying healthy while being treated at home without rehospitalization. The success of caring for premature babies requires cooperation between nurses and families. Nurse support for the family will enable the family to participate actively during care and be able to care for premature babies at home.

Abstract

This systematic review aimed to identify the effectiveness of therapeutic play in reducing the impact of hospitalization on pre and school-aged children. Five databases were searched (ClinicalKey Nursing, Scopus, Sage Journals, ScienceDirect, and PubMed) for articles published between 2019 and 2023. Six RCT studies from Turkey met the inclusion criteria and were assessed for quality using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist. The therapeutic play interventions included goldfish therapy, educational animated films, finger puppet play, music and kaleidoscope therapy, cartoon-assisted endoscopy preparation packages, and buzzy, jet lidocaine, bubble-blowing, and aromatherapy. The duration of the interventions varied. The outcomes measured were anxiety, fear, pain, emotional and psychological well-being, and postoperative nausea and vomiting. The results showed that therapeutic play significantly reduced anxiety (50% of studies), fear (100%), and pain (50%) in children undergoing hospitalization or medical procedures. Goldfish therapy also improved emotional and psychological well-being. No significant differences were found in postoperative vomiting and nausea. The most effective interventions were goldfish therapy, educational animated films, and finger puppet play. In conclusion, therapeutic play is a beneficial nursing intervention for reducing the negative impacts of hospitalization on children aged 3-12 years. Recommendations include implementing therapeutic play in pediatric hospital settings and conducting further research to expand the types of therapeutic play available.
