Abstract

Previous research has highlighted bullying as a significant issue in Indonesia, with a notable increase in cyberbullying among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic, adversely affecting their psychological well-being. However, there has been limited discussion on bullying in the post-COVID-19 era. This study has three aims. The first is to examine the subjective well-being (SWB) of children who have either experienced bullying or have not been bullied after the pandemic. The second is to assess the occurrence of both traditional bullying (involving siblings and at school) and cyberbullying in Indonesia following COVID-19. The third aim is to investigate the factors linked to these forms of bullying post-pandemic. The participants were middle school students (N = 943; 57.2% girls, 45.0% in grade 7). The Children's Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale with five items (CW-SWBS5) was employed to assess children's SWB. Separate measures were utilized for traditional and cyberbullying. Six factors—family, school climate, personal satisfaction, friendships, safety, and social media usage—were analyzed as independent variables using linear regression to determine their impact on bullying forms. The structural equation model (SEM) was applied to evaluate how these bullying types affect SWB. The findings revealed that sibling bullying and cyberbullying significantly influenced children’s SWB, with girls reporting lower SWB scores than boys. Cyberbullying emerged as the most prevalent form of bullying post-pandemic. A positive school climate was found to shield children from bullying. Cummins' theory of well-being homeostasis was employed to interpret the results. This study also discussed implications for educators and parents.

Abstract

Problematic behavior in teenagers is still a serious focus throughout the world, including in Indonesia. Based on data from the Bandung Special Children's Empowerment Institute (LPKA), there was an increase in the number of prisoners from 2019 to 2021. The highest type of violation was theft. Until now, various interventions are still being sought to deal with this problem. One of them is the development of the Functional Family Therapy (FFT) intervention by Sexton and Alexander since 2002 in the United States. Apart from that, testing of the effectiveness of FFT is still being carried out. However, FFT has not been developed in Indonesia. This research aims to create an FFT design to reduce the frequency of problem behavior and the rate of repeated behavior (recidivism) among teenagers in Indonesia. The research and development method is used as a reference for preparing the design. The conclusion from this research is that the FFT program design has been evaluated and can be tested further to reduce the level of problem behavior and adolescent recidivism in LPKA Bandung. The implication is that FFT is a new intervention to handle cases of law violations by teenagers.

Abstract

COVID-19 affects human life, but very few studies have examined the quality of life of children and adolescents during the pandemic. This article aims to report on the quality of life of children and adolescents (N = 1,474; ages 10-18 years) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Data were collected using Google Forms and convenience sampling. The measuring instrument used measured five domains of quality of life, namely material, physical, social, emotional, and productive well-being. The data were analyzed using crosstab, frequency, comparison of mean values, and ANOVA. The results show that children and adolescents have been able to maintain their subjective well-being and adapt to unpleasant situations during the lockdown. Younger boys and girls show significantly higher mean scores than older ones. Children and adolescents reported that they were bored because they had limited physical activities, were dissatisfied with school closures and with what they had learnt at home, and were frustrated by the limited contact they had with friends. The research has implications in providing advice to parents, teachers, children, and adolescents to improve the quality of life of children and adolescents during the pandemic.

Abstract

Abstract. Cyberbullying is increasing and negatively impacts adolescents' subjective well-being (SWB). Victims of cyberbullying often experience disruptions in interpersonal satisfaction, especially within family relationships. Family relationships, which involve social interactions and closeness among members, are essential for fostering satisfaction and happiness. This study examines how family relationships contribute to the SWB of junior high school students in Bandung City who experience cyberbullying. Participants included 239 students aged 12–16 years (N= 239; 51.6% female; 49.0% male) selected through stratified cluster random sampling in a cross-sectional survey. Family relationships were measured using the Children's World's tool and SWB was measured using the Children's Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale (CW-SWBS5). Victim categorization followed Patchin and Hinduja’s measurement instrument. Data analysis using linear regression techniques. Results showed that victims of cyberbullying had below-average SWB (M = 64.9; SD = 28.7) compared to Cummins’ theoretical mean of 75, with female victims reporting lower SWB than males. Family relationships, such as feeling safe at home (β = .349, p < .001) and parents listening and paying attention (β = .220, p < .011), significantly positively contributed to their SWB. Therefore, building positive family relationships and interactions is crucial for enhancing the SWB of adolescent victims of cyberbullying.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the topics adolescents discuss with their parents, how frequently these conversations occur, and how important adolescents perceive them to be. The participants were 331 middle school students aged 12–16 years (53.8% girls, 46.2% boys), selected through convenience sampling. Data were gathered using a questionnaire covering four domains of sexual communication: developmental and social issues, sexual safety, sexual experiences, and sexual activities. We applied Friedman test on data from a related sample, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, the Mann-Whitney U test for comparing independent groups, and Spearman rank correlation. Results revealed that communication patterns differ between mothers and fathers. Mothers were more likely to discuss developmental and social issues, while fathers more often addressed sexual experiences. The findings highlight the need to enhance parent-adolescent communication about sexual matters.

Abstract

Savahl et al. (2021) propose a quadripartite model for children's subjective well-being (SWB) that includes both: global (context-free items assessing overall well-being) and specific (domain-based items evaluating particular life aspects) cognitive components, as well as positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA). The goal of this study is to test this model of SWB among Indonesian children using data from the third wave of the Children’s Worlds Survey. A representative sample of West Java children aged 10 and 12 years (N = 9,526). Data analysis involved confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results for a model with a second-order latent variable using the pooled sample displayed good fit indexes. The second-order analysis showed significant standardized regression weights of the SWB items of each latent variable, and of the first order latent variables on the second order latent variable as expected The high internal consistency of the CW-SWBS5, CW-DBSWBS, and CW-PNAS indicates that the quadripartite model of SWB is psychometrically robust among Indonesian children aged 10 and 12. However, the notably low factor loadings for items related to “satisfaction with the people children live with”—particularly when compared to higher-loading items such as “satisfaction with safety”—suggest a potential cultural divergence in how certain SWB domains are interpreted. Multigroup CFA showed that all statistics can be meaningfully compared between boys and girls and between 10 and 12-year-olds age groups. The findings of this study confirm this model can be used with Indonesian children and results offer valuable insights for parents, teachers, and policymakers aiming to develop evidence-based interventions that support child well-being across cognitive and emotional domains.

Abstract

Cyberspace has become essential, offering both benefits and challenges, notably the emergence of cyberbullying. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of cyberbullying perpetration and understand how factors like Problematic Internet Use (PIU), stress, loneliness, social media duration, and frequency of fighting contribute among middle school students. It also examined subjective well-being (SWB). Selected through cluster random sampling, the study involved 768 students (50.5% girls, 49.5% boys) aged 12-16 from 16 middle schools in Bandung City (M age = 14.02). Data collection utilized the General Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2), stress and loneliness scales, a questionnaire on social media use duration and school fights frequency, Children’s World Subjective Well-Being Scale 5 items (CW-SWBS5), and the Cyberbullying Offending Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive methods and linear regression. Findings highlighted that mood regulation (p = .028), negative PIU outcomes (p = .003), stress (p = .004), loneliness (p = .003), social media duration (p = .036), and school fights frequency (p = .000) predict cyberbullying. More boys (24.1%) engage in cyberbullying than girls (16.5%). Generally, girls reported lower SWB scores (M = 67.17) than boys (M = 74.59). Parents and teachers should make efforts to prevent both girls and boys from engaging in cyberbullying, in order to help them maintain their SWB at an above-average level.
